Unveiled at the 2018 New York International Auto Show, the All-new Cerato (also known as Forte in some countries) has made a successful debut featuring its impressively enhanced exterior and interior design.

Looking more dynamic and stylish, the All-new Cerato’s design has moved in a sportier direction while preserving the original design elements from predecessors. Let’s explore more of its eye-catching design updates.

Sophisticated yet Sporty Exterior – the Mini Stinger

The All-new Cerato maintains its sporty and youthful image while evolving a more sophisticated appearance that nods to a number of sleek and dynamic styling cues inspired by the Stinger fastback sport sedan.

Like the Stinger, the Cerato’s long hood and short deck style built on a wider vehicle body platform recreate an overall fastback-like shape, fueling a sense of masculinity.

The front end is more aggressive with a new sturdy version of the Kia’s signature ‘tiger-nose’ grille and a Stinger-esque headlamp design, while the Cerato is the first model in its class to come equipped with full LED headlamps. The cowl point, base of the windshield, has been moved back to afford a more athletic and well-grounded stance.

Around back, the rear bumpers are designed to look connected – Much like the Kia Sportage compact crossover, the Cerato now has a sleek horizontal trim piece that connects to the LED taillights.

A Comfortable, High-tech Interior for Everyone

As outstanding as its exterior design, the Cerato’s interior has been redesigned to provide an enhanced sense of spaciousness. In order to treat both driver and passengers to a more comfortable ride, the overall length, width, and height of the Cerato have been increased to allow for more head and legroom, as well as cargo room in the trunk.

Simplicity is the key to the luxuriousness of the Cerato dashboard. Again drawing inspiration from the Stinger, the horizontal layout of the dashboard paints a picture of a wider interior. Minimizing clutter with clean lines and minimal buttons that are intuitively placed below an 8-inch touchscreen adds a sense of openness to the Cerato’s high-tech look.

The classic story of Peter Pan has been revived as a Sci-Fi blockbuster with Kia.

Kia Motors has launched a new global advertising campaign featuring characters from the beloved story of Peter Pan, with the goal of conveying sophisticated future technologies in an easy-to-understand and friendly way.

The three-minute film, entitled Peter Returns, is a re-imagining of the world-famous Peter Pan fairy tale and offers a futuristic take on Peter’s ongoing conflict with Captain Hook. In 2030, the not-too-distant-future, Peter Pan returns as a righteous hero, joined by trusted companions Wendy and Tinker Bell, to defend Neverland from the nefarious Captain Hook, who has been monopolizing the fruits of technological progress.

This short film is part of Kia’s ‘Boundless for All’ vision, in which opportunities for mobility are limitless, and where everyone can enjoy the infinite value that future transportation will bring. This is Kia’s manifesto for its role as a mass mobility provider in the future, with a thoroughgoing commitment to provide broader solutions to mobility.

Under the direction of award-winning French filmmaker Philippe André, Kia’s own brand identity is naturally reflected in this delightful film. Bringing this futuristic dream to life whilst capturing Kia’s unique spirit of challenge and passion for innovation, the film boasts an impressive production scale. About 200 actors, actresses and production staff members joined the project, while about 100 different costumes and a wealth of props were created. It also took around a year to make sketches of the imaginary Neverland and the future city and turn them into computer graphics (CG).

Throughout the film, viewers are invited to a fun-filled experience of the multiple autonomous and advanced technologies featured in the Kia Proceed Concept, which was previously unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2017.

Kia’s Smart Biometric Access System recognizes Peter just by his facial features and gait, the Dynamic Wireless Charging System automatically charges itself while running on the road, and the Valet Parking Pilot allows the vehicle to park on its own to help Peter and Wendy infiltrate Hook Tower.

For boundless communication, Smart Pixel Light technology sends messages to other drivers or pedestrians such as, “Your Lights are on” or “Watch Out!,” to help clear up confusion on the roads. Sound Focusing allows the vehicle to target sound at a specific person to alert them of the car’s presence, while Intelligent Agent is able to understand the driver’s voice commands and respond accordingly.

The technologies seen in the film are not just imaginary, but are actually being developed by Kia. Under the ‘Boundless for All’ thesis, Kia plans to commercialize Level 4 autonomous driving technology, with ‘Smart City’ autonomous vehicle testing due to commence in 2021.

In part 1 of the sedan vs. hatchback series, we briefly talked about the main differences between a sedan and a hatchback. Now we know that a sedan is a three-box design vehicle that has more stability at high speeds, and the hatchback a two-box design vehicle with maximized flexibility in the cargo space!

To give you a clearer idea which vehicle might suit you best, we will specifically look into two Kia models that have both sedan and hatchback options: the Rio and Cerato (also known as the Forte).

Two Faces of Kia Rio: the Sedan and the Hatchback

Both the fourth-generation Rio sedan and hatchback offer a slightly bigger, sportier appearance than their predecessors thanks to a longer wheelbase and more upright A-pillars. The Rio’s interior is also decidedly more spacious, modern and upscale with an improved instrument panel and upgraded interior materials, accommodating its new range of technologies. Under its hood, it is equipped with a 130 horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, improving the driving dynamics and fuel efficiency, as well as responsiveness.

Kia Rio Hatchback

Aside from the similar specifications, the hatchback has a thinner tiger-nose grille with a different fog light design. While the headlights of the hatchback have a four-lens design, the sedan’s have two. As mentioned before in part 1, the hatchback offers a foldable rear seat option, which allows ample cargo space to accommodate large luggage, small furniture items or weekend gear – tailored for a lifestyle in need of more room.

Kia Cerato sedan and hatchback, also known as the Forte in some regions, feature a sophisticated yet sporty design with efficient powertrain components and advanced driver assistance systems. Delivering impressive performance along with excellent fuel economy, the Cerato offers a wide, comfortable cabin no matter how long the journey.

Similar to the Rio, the obvious difference between the Cerato sedan and hatchback comes down to the added storage capacity that the hatchback body style provides. While both have a bold, aggressive front fascia, the wide tiger-nose grille on the hatchback extends into the headlights.

The choice differentiators between a sedan and a hatchback are your lifestyle and personal circumstances. Perhaps you are an adventurer with a lot of equipment to carry or, perhaps, you like more driving power that gives you a smoother ride on daily driving – your choice of classification entirely depends on your preferences. When car searching, or just discussing vehicles in general, you are sure to come across models offering two different class options – “sedan” and “hatchback.” Sedans and hatchbacks are very similar in that they both have seating capacity for up to five with a spacious trunk for storage. So what makes a sedan a sedan and a hatchback a hatchback?

Kia Rio Sedan

Sedans are traditional car models generally with four-doors and two rows of seating. The roof curves down to the trunk, hinged below the rear window and the trunk space is separated from the car’s interior. In automotive styling terms, the sedan is a three-box design vehicle with its primary areas articulated into three “boxes” or “pillars”: the engine, passenger compartment, and trunk.

Kia Rio Hatchback

Meanwhile, hatchbacks are two-box design vehicles with the passenger compartment and cargo space in one pillar. Although hatchbacks are very similar to sedans, they are usually available in either three-door (two passenger doors and the hatch) or five-door (four passenger doors and the hatch) models, since in the case of hatchbacks, the trunk’s lid is also counted as a door.

Unlike the sedan, the hatchback’s roof is extended, hinged at the top of the vehicle right above the rear window, maximizing accessibility to the cargo space from outside the car. This design also makes the cargo area fully accessible from inside the car.

Kia Cerato (Forte) Hatchback

While both sedans and hatchbacks are very similar in general, hatchbacks offer more flexibility for cargo storage than most sedans, especially when the rear seats are folded down. More importantly, most hatchbacks offer better fuel economy compared to sedans thanks to their comparatively lighter weight.

On the other hand, sedans tend to have a bigger engine, which is crucial for vehicle performance and handling. With the added weight of the trunk, sedans are more stable at high speeds compared to hatchbacks. The longer wheelbase also lets passengers enjoy more generous legroom. 

While it always boils down to personal preferences when deciding the car that is right for you, Kia Motors is constantly dedicated to create dynamic and diversified vehicles to fit any customer’s needs. Another triple victory for Kia’s design excellence! 

Following the triple trophies won at the iF Design Award earlier in 2018, Kia has triumphed again at the Red Dot Award, receiving three prestigious awards for Kia Stinger, Kia Stonic and Kia Picanto.

Arranged by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Germany, the Red Dot Design Award is one of the most highly-respected international design awards in the world, alongside the iF Design Award and IDEA Design Award. The product design category saw heated competition this year with over 6,300 products from 59 countries.

This year was all the more special for Kia with the new fastback sports sedan Stinger winning the ‘Best of the Best’ title at the hands of 40 international jury of design experts. Highly praised for its pioneering design, the Stinger carries classic, modern gran turismo design with a spacious and cosseting interior.

Kia Stonic, the most customizable compact crossover Kia has ever made, was also named ‘Winner’ of said category for eye-catching, SUV-inspired design, combined with an elevated seating position and agile handling for a sporty, exciting drive.

Despite its compact dimensions, another winner – the third-generation of the Kia Picanto – received praise for its youthful, energetic design that offers the largest cargo capacity in its class.

The latest trio of victories adds to Kia’s continuing legacy of successful design, winning a remarkable 21 Red Dot Awards since the Kia Soul first took its victory in 2009.

In celebration of Earth Day, we’d like to take you on Kia’s green journey. In efforts to achieve a sustainable future, Kia pursues significant ECO dynamic activities. In 2014, Kia ranked 35th in the 2014 Best Global Green Brands, marking its footprint as a rising star among global automotive brands in terms of sustainability and environmental friendliness.

The environmentally friendly brand ECO dynamics was first launched in 2009 as part of Kia’s firm commitment to the pursuit of zero emissions in the brand’s future. “Eco”, taking lead from “Ecology” and “Economy”, paired with “Dynamics” – ECO dynamics – translates to “Automobile of Sustainable Mobility”. Following suit, there are now three active sub brands: ECO Hybrid, ECO Electric, and ECO Plug-in.

Vehicles that fall under the Hybrid sub brand are those that combine traditional combustion engine with an electric motor to maximize engine efficiency while minimizing carbon emissions. Building upon the success of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Kia has increased battery capacity and is constantly developing Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs), to enable full electric operation over an extended distance.

Electric Vehicles – Soul EV –  have been produced in pursuit of the ultimate goal of zero emissions. EVs’ high efficiency EV motor minimizes energy draw to result in better fuel economy and its massive lithium ion polymer battery improves fuel efficiency as well as battery life through low internal resistance, improved design and control to help maintain optimal status when being charged or discharged.

EVs have a built-in charging system which maximizes convenience by offering both fast charging at charging stations and easy charging at home. There is no concern about not knowing how much driving distance you have remaining with the supervision cluster, an OLED screen and round segment LCD providing a helpful information for eco-friendly driving.

As part of eco-strategy to expand the range of environmentally-friendly vehicles, we recently exhibited the Niro EV concept, a fully-electric compact SUV, at CES 2018. Powered by a next-generation electric vehicle powertrain, this concept boasts new safe, advanced technologies that represent the next step in our ongoing journey to electrification.

The reveals were abundant in terms of design, technology, and power upgrades, sure to keep everyone on their toes for more to come in the future. Continue reading to find out more!

All-New K900

The all-new second-generation K900 combines a dignified and sophisticated exterior design, a beautifully crafted cabin featuring premium materials, and performance characteristics that befit a world-class flagship sedan. Reimagined in every way, the K900 brings an array of new systems and safety features with it, making it the most technologically advanced Kia ever.

Slightly longer and wider than its predecessor, the K900 actually looks tighter thanks to its reimagined proportions, especially with respect to its profile. Inspired by a design ethic called The Gravity of Prestige, the cabin represents elegance in design but minimalism in layout, providing drivers and passengers with a peaceful retreat that is simple, modern, and comfortable.

The all-new K900 is also equipped with a wide range of advanced technology, connectivity, and infotainment features, including but not limited to a Human Machine Interface (HMI) touch screen and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

This luxury vehicle is a truly sophisticated driving machine powered by a 3.3-liter twin turbo V6 engine – the same one that can be found in the highly acclaimed Stinger fastback sport sedan. This world-class engine boasts 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque and was recently named to Ward’s 10 Best Engines list for its exceptional responsiveness and refinement.

2019 Kia Optima

Refreshed 2019 Kia Optima is redesigned inside and out with expanded ADAS technology and European-inspired two-tone sport leather-trimmed seats, making it a more compelling midsize sedan. Drivers may also choose to further enhance the Optima line with new alloy wheel choices, ambient LED interior lighting, and a new Pass Red exterior color.

The 2019 Optima will also be available in four trim variants, all with their very own design enhancements. The full lineup features a number of ADAS features, a suite of technologies designed to work in concert to potentially lessen the severity of a collision or avoid it entirely.

2019 Kia Grand Carnival (Kia Sedona)

The refreshed 2019 Grand Carnival (also known as Kia Sedona in the North America regions) is a refined minivan that maintains the traditional functional convenience with ample space for passengers and cargo, but with more style, technology, and amenities.

Newly designed front and rear fascia give it a cohesive design with the other new models of Kia’s lineup. A new available rear-seat entertainment system along with many other convenience features keep the Grand Carnival’s technology ahead of the curve. Under its hood is a true 3.3-liter V6 that can now be paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

A new Green Light Project (GLP) Vocational Training Center has opened in the Gahengeri Sector of the Rwamagana district in Rwanda’s Eastern Province to teach agricultural skills to young adults. The new GLP training facility will foster greater self-sufficiency throughout the region, helping local communities generate sustainable income from agricultural sales. The Rwanda center is the tenth GLP project established across seven different African nations since 2012.

This Vocational Training Center is the latest stage in Kia’s ongoing Green Light Project global corporate social responsibility (CSR) program. The Green Light Project strives to improve access to healthcare, education, and employment for disadvantaged children and young adults in some of the most underdeveloped regions in the world. The program seeks to “turn the red light to green” for individuals and communities, empowering them with the skills and opportunities needed to improve their lives.

The opening ceremony of the center was attended by local residents and a host of dignitaries including Mr. Rajab Mbonyumuvunyi, major of the Rwamagana District; Mr. Fred Mufurukye, governor of Rwanda’s Eastern Province; South Korean Ambassador to Rwanda Eung Joong Kim; and Mr. Byung Hwa Lee, Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Rwanda Director. Also present were Han-yoon So, Director of Merry Year International, and Mr. Kyehwan Roh of Kia’s CSR Management Team.

The local economy of the Rwamagana district is heavily dependent on agriculture, with farmers making up 90 percent of the Gahegeri Sector’s working population. Unfortunately, there are typically low levels of productivity due to the dense population and mountainous nature of the region. The lack of skills, machinery, and poor storage facilities and an inadequate infrastructure pose additional challenges.

The GLP Vocational Training Center provides an agricultural machinery rental service and incubation program to local farmers, supporting new and existing farms with harvesting, sales, and distribution on top of acting as a job training facility.

Kia’s Green Light Project currently works with local people on projects in six neighboring African countries – Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi, Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia – and plans to expand throughout other developing countries in Africa and all around the world.

K900: The Upgraded Classic

Luxury takes up on a whole new meaning with the all-new K900 drawing inspiration from the Gravity of Prestige design concept exuding strength through rich detail and solid surfaces.

A new Quadric pattern signature grille, designed conceptually based on the changing shape of condensed energy, has been introduced as the focal point of the K900.  The new grille contains 176 jewel-like cells representing the release of energy accelerating away from its very center. Geometric design details like this add an element of modernity to the latest technology.

Lines in the high-strength steel bodywork flow naturally from the grille, rising over the hood and in profile, sweeping through to the rear flanks before meeting at the back. The visually progressive design of the Duplex LED headlamps provides the all-new K900 with a high-prestige image. A chrome flash adds visual depth to the smooth bodywork, the chrome window-lines add a degree of technicality and structure to the free-flowing C-pillar before merging with the rear deck featuring tail lights and exhaust housing, also finished with fine chrome details.

Size-wise, the all-new K900 is longer and wider than its predecessor, while both front and the rear overhangs are short, pushing the wheels further out to the corners of the car expressing more space along with improvement in ride quality.

Inside is a refined and luxurious cabin wrapping around the driver designed with greater space and comfort than ever before. Flowing from the center of the dash and outwards to the doors, sufaces are trimmed in a sophisticated combination of materials, with soft-touch feel, a blend of highly tactile wood and metal veneers, and genuine leather throughout.

Last, but certainly not least, the K900 features an array of new systems and safety features, making it the most technologically advanced Kia ever. Driver operation will be enhanced with the 12.3-inch Human Machine Interface (HMI) touch screen and UVO luxe providing all sorts of information. The all-new K900 has four drive mode options – Comfort, Eco, Sport, and Custom – and an array of safety features provided as part of Kia’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
