The all-new Picanto has been born with higher performance and a new design characteristic. The new Picanto is a result of the efforts made to keep up with recent trends in the automotive industry, especially in terms of environmental friendliness, economy and performance. Let’s take a look at the Kappa 1.0 MPI 3-cylinder engine.

The new Picanto comes with the new Kappa 1.0 3-cylinder MPI engine, which was newly developed for the next generation of small cars. It has class leading efficiency and performance among 1.0L engines.

The new Kappa 1.0 3-cylinder MPI engine features a maximum output of 69ps (European standard), a maximum torque of 9.7kgf•m (European standard), fuel efficiency 4.2L/100km (base), 4.1L/100km (Eco-Dynamic), and a CO2 emission rate of 99g/km (base), 95g/km (Eco-Dynamic). Compared to the pevious Picanto (Epsilon 1.0 MPI European Standards), its maximum output rose by 11 percent, maximum torque by 9 percent and fuel efficiency by 15 percent. Its CO2 emissions dropped up to 17 percent.

The new Picanto also includes new technologies, such as the ISG system (Idle Stop and Go System) and Dual CVVT, which has been applied to a small car for the first time in the world. With these new technologies, it not only has outstanding performance and fuel efficiency, but it also is very competitive in regards to green technology, as it is in line with reinforced exhaust gas regulations.

The new Kappa 1.0 3-cylinder MPI engine, which also features various cutting-edge technologies, optimizes the intake/exhaust port to reduce pneumatic resistance, and maximizes induction efficiency. It also improves both performance and fuel efficiency by using the variable intake/exhaust valve timing mechanism, which adjusts the timing of the intake/exhaust valve according to the engine revolution and load, and the variable induction system (VIS), which adjusts the induction path according to the engine rev count to increase the output.

Additionally, the new Picanto’s ‘ISG system,’ improves economical fuel efficiency. The system automatically stops the engine at an intersection or when the car needs to stop and immediately starts the engine when the driver wants to drive the car again.

Here’s a video that introduces Kappa engine’s new high-technologies. Enjoy!
