Recently, Kia conducted a new type of vehicle crash test on its stylish minivan, the Grand Carnival (Sedona), which received the maximum 5-star safety rating from NHTSA. Instead of a traditional crash test against a stationary wall, we went vertical, reproducing the test by dropping the car from up high! A large explosion in China has claimed at least 50 lives and over 8,000 vehicles have been destroyed as a result. Currently it’s still unclear what caused the explosions, which injured over 700 people. According to a recent report, around 4,000 Hyundai and Kia vehicles were destroyed in the disaster, as well as 2,750 Volkswagens and 1,500 Renaults. Toyota also confirmed to Automotive News that it lost vehicles but currently doesn’t have a count. Volkswagen released a statement concerning the terrible accident, confirming that none of the vehicles involved will ever make it to market. Hyundai and Kia plan to launch seven new electrified vehicles by 2017. Hyundai will have a total of five electrified vehicles in its lineup by model year 2018: Sonata hybrid, Sonata plug-in hybrid, a dedicated hybrid, a dedicated electric vehicle and the Tucson Hydrogen Fuel Cell.
