Hyundai and Kia are settling big. TikTok is more than just a medium to look at the coolest new dances and fashion trends presented by people you’ve probably never heard of. Unfortunately, a series of viral TikToks exposed that a shocking amount of Hyundai and Kia vehicles can be stolen very easily. This information spread like wildfire, resulting in a rash of ongoing thefts that have displeased insurance companies, municipalities, and customers alike. Hyundai and Kia are settling; the brand will shell out $200 million because of the thefts. This settlement should cover the nine million drivers affected by the thefts, with $145 million earmarked for out-of-pocket losses…

It’s officially official. Here are all the details on Kia’s seven-passenger EV. Kia has teased, either via concept or official spy shot, the details about its seven-passenger EV; the EV9. Now, it’s here in all of its glory, it has made its official North American production debut at the 2023 New York International Auto Show. Soon, it’ll be rolling right into US and Canadian dealerships. 2024 EV9 GT-Line The EV9 is more than just a big EV SUV, which is a pretty important milestone in its own right. It’s part of Kia’s Plan S strategy, and the vehicle will act as the flagship for the entire lineup. “With the launch of the EV9, we are incorporating our experience in produc…

We’ve got some more details about Kia’s fully-electric family hauler. We already know what the Kia EV9 looks like. It’s boxy, cool, and ready to be probably the first entrant on sale in the mainstream EV 7-seater class. Yet, when Kia dropped the pictures, the brand didn’t give us much else. Until now; Kia has released a few more pictures and details about the forthcoming EV9 crossover. Yet again, like the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Hyundai Ioniq 6, and Genesis GV60, the EV9 uses the same E-GMP platform that underpins those smaller models. Likewise, it has the same 800V architecture that allows for ultra-fast DC fast charging. In all, Kia is aiming for 336 miles of rang…

It’s finally here, and boy howdy is it huge. The Kia EV9 has been unveiled, and it’s a huge, futuristically boxy family-sized EV that seats six or seven people. Staying somewhat close to the concept, this 99% production-intent version takes a lot of elements seen from the concept and translates them into a stylish, big crossover. The styling language is undeniably boxy, with straight chiseled lines, and surfacing that reminds of us something from Tron Legacy. The EV6 is a little big bigger than the Telluride, but its styling seems to hide all that visual mass. Floor-to-ceiling taillights dominate the rear fascia, and in all, the EV9 is a lovely, blocky big crossover. …

Kia teases more details of its EV flagship. We’ve seen spy photos, and a concept mock-up of the vehicle, but Kia’s just dropped a handful of teaser shots and a video of its forthcoming EV9 crossover. The Kia EV9 will be a seven-seater, meant to do battle against the very small number of big EVs that can tangibly seat seven seats. Currently, only the very expensive Tesla Model X, and Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV are some of the few EVs that can seat seven. We can’t see much, but what we can see seems to follow what we’ve seen in official spy shots and the concept. The EV9 is still very boxy, with no coupe-like roofline like the Tesla Model Y or Model X. Yet, the shape feels…

Maybe the string of Hyundai and Kia thefts will finally come to an end. Hyundai and Kia both have had a pretty big black eye as of late, largely due to TikTok. After a group of teens in Milwaukee discovered that many late-model Hyundai and Kia products can be stolen with devices as simple as iPhone charging cables, the brand has faced backlash as thefts and joyriding have spread across the US and Canada. Some insurance companies have even started to refuse to insure some Hyundai and Kia vehicles in certain municipalities. Well, Hyundai and Kia have announced a solution that goes beyond the handful of aftermarket steering lock devices they’re given out. The brand is …

Are the Kia EV9’s leaked specs competitive? Kia hasn’t been shy about plans for its forthcoming three-row EV crossover, the EV9. The boxy crossover has been spied out and about during real-world testing, but we haven’t known much in the way of specifications. At least, not until now – a consumer survey sent to Kia Telluride owners may have revealed the EV9’s specifications, as reported by Electrek. According to the survey, the base EV9 could have a range of 220 miles, have 200 horsepower, scoot to 60 in about 8.5 seconds, and start at $56,000. Trim 2 will be the range leader, cresting 290 miles, with the same 200 horsepower motor, but starting at $61,000. Top trims …

Hyundai is planning some upgrades to make its EVs even more efficient, courtesy of new tech from STMicroelectronics. Underpinning the generally very good triplet of EVs, the Kia EV6, Genesis GV60, and Hyundai Ioniq 5, lies the Hyundai E-GMP platform. Stylish, efficient, and reasonably priced; Hyundai wants to make some hardware upgrades that will make them even more competitive in the market. Hyundai will use a brand-new Sillicon-Carbide power module from STMicroelectronics that should improve efficiency from the original silicon power module. This new Sillicon-Carbide module can handle up to 1200V, and is liquid-cooled, allowing for faster charge times. This new Sl…

The 2023 Kia EV6 got a pretty big price jump. The Kia EV6’s pricing had been pretty competitive against cars like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, or even its sister model, the Hyundai Ioniq 5. But, now, the model’s got a pretty big price jump, now starting at $48,500; primarily because Kia killed the base trim. Known as “Light” the Kia EV6’s former base trim originally started at $41,800, not including the $1,295 destination fee. Now, the new base trim is the “Wind” trim, which also got a $1,000 price increase, making the cheapest way to get in a Kia EV6, $48,500. It’s not a wanton price increase, the base Light trim came with a smaller battery, less range, and less power t…

Hyundai’s new Georgia EV plant, won’t just make Hyundai-branded EVs. Announced about the same time as the groundbreaking ceremony, Kia announced that the new Savanna, Georgia EV plant under construction will also be used to produce Kia EVs, too. This $5.54 billion plant will produce both EVs and EV batteries and should start pumping out EVs by the start of 2025. In all, it’s a part of an agreement between the state of Georgia and Hyundai to provide around 8,100 jobs and help develop the state into a high-tech manufacturing hub. This news dovetails neatly with Kia’s already existing Georgia area manufacturing. Kia’s CEO Sean Yoon claims that in tandem with its suppliers,…

The 2023 Kia Niro EV is only a little more expensive than last year’s model. Kia just revealed pricing levels for the fully-electric version of the Kia Niro; a base Kia Niro EV will cost a buyer $40,745, including the $1,295 destination fee. This time, the Kia Niro EV is only offered in two trims, the price leading Wind, and the upper trimmed Wave. The Wave trim will set a buyer back $45,745, including the destination fee. In all, the base Kia Niro EV is roughly $10,000 more expensive than the standard hybrid Niro. Both trims are well equipped for the price and class, getting driver safety goodies like lane keep assist. Stepping up from the Wind to the Wave trim adds …

Hyundai is hurrying to make its EV efforts even stronger. In a bombshell announcement made to the public, Hyundai announced its intent to overhaul and streamline its EV operations in several key ways. The whole move will cost at least a staggering $12.6 billion to develop, starting from now, until 2030. Hyundai wants a “software-defined” EV experience, to bring the business to its EV competition. First up, Hyundai is developing a new operating system that will be deployed in all Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis vehicles, including ICE and hybrid ones, by 2025. This new OS is designed to work at “blazing speeds” and offer over-the-air updates; a move that Hyundai says will incr…

The 2023 Kia Niro Plug-in hybrid might be a solid buy. Pricing for the 2023 Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid (now formally marked as PHEV) has been unveiled, and on paper, it looks to be a pretty competitive little crossover. The 2023 Kia Niro PHEV starts at $33,740 for the EX trim and $39,490 for the SX Premium trim. The PHEV only comes in two trims; no base LX PHEV, though. Those prices don’t include the $1,295 destination fee. All 2023 Kia Niro PHEVs have an upgraded version of the 1.6-liter, electric motor, and six-speed dual-clutch automatic – the Niro PHEV has a larger electric motor than the standard Niro Hybrid. Meaning, instead of 139 horsepower, the Niro PHEV is good …

Kia unveils some pricing and ownership details for the 2023 Niro Crossover. The Kia Niro was fully redesigned for the 2023 model year, but until now, pricing has been purely speculative. For 2023, the Kia Niro will start at $27,785 for the base LX trim, $30,385 for the mid-tier EX trim, and $33,785 for the topmost SX trim. These prices include the $1,295 destination fee. The SX and EX trim has an available touring package, that adds attractive styling touches.” Keep in mind, this is for the hybrid Niro, pricing on the PHEV or full EV Niro hasn’t been released yet. Still, Kia is making things easier for Niro EV owners, though. The brand is including 500 kilowatt-hours w…

Kia’s fully-electric, Telluride-sized crossover is almost here. The seven-seat EV space has few options; the Tesla Model X is expensive, and the Tesla Model Y and Mercedes-Benz EQB’s third rows are pretty tiny. So, it was only a matter of time before some automaker created a seven-passenger EV with space for real adults. The Kia EV9 concept was well-received, and now we’ve got some on-the-road prototype images of the thing, as it nears its completion. Currently, on testing in Seoul, the EV9 will be Kia’s flagship model. Kia claims it will “ revolutionize the large electric SUV segment while accelerating Kia’s brand transformation and affirming its leadership in susta…

The Kia EV6 is Kia’s most powerful car, ever. Released during Pebble Beach, the Kia EV6 GT is the top-of-the-line variant of the EV6 crossover. It boasts 576 horsepower split between two motors, enabling AWD. The super-powered Kia will sprint from 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, and keep pulling all the way up to a 168 MPH top speed. There’s even a drift mode for all you power sliding hooligans reading this, salivating over those specs. 2023 EV6 GT Outside, the Kia EV6 looks somewhat similar to the Kia EV6 GT-Line currently on sale, but a few changes differentiate the two. Firstly, the EV6 GT’s exterior has neon accents in key areas. The 21-inch wheels sit in front of neon gree…

Most everyone agrees that the Kia EV6 is a slick-looking car, both inside and out. Now, the model line has a tangible award extolling its virtues. In a press announcement from Kia Motors America, the brand told everyone that the 2022 EV6 is the winner of a Wards Auto 10 Best Interiors & UX award. For those unfamiliar, Wards Auto is a longstanding automotive publication that dates back to the 1920s. It’s been a stalwart organization that has some of the most well-respected awards programs, like the Wards 10 best engines list. For the Ward’s Auto 10 Best Interiors & UX award, vehicles that are new or have had heavily reworked interiors are evaluated on a series …

Kia’s original Niro small crossover was notable for one reason: You could get a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, or a full EV. Aside from that clever trick (the only crossover shape to do it), there wasn’t much to take note of. It wasn’t an exciting vehicle, and better PHEV and EV models quickly arrived on the market to dull the shine even more. Get a Quote on a New Kia Niro There’s an all-new Kia Niro on the way, though. It’s bigger inside, has more distinctive styling, adds some of the latest tech, and gets some mild powertrain improvements. AutoGuide got to spend some time with the new Niro – now the only vehicle with hybrid, PHEV, and EV choices – at the 2022 New York In…

The Kia Telluride, with its rugged looks, huge cabin, and surprising levels of luxury, was a huge hit for the automaker when it arrived in 2019. This year, Kia is giving the three-row crossover an update that helps make it more capable and gives it more high-tech features as well as new off-road abilities. We got to check it out in-depth and up-close at the New York International Auto Show, and here are five things we think you’ll like to know about the 2023 Kia Telluride. Get a Quote on a New Kia Telluride X-Pro Off-Road For 2023, Telluride gets two new X versions, each one marking the spot for a different group of buyers. X-Line is the one that’s for buyers who wa…

We’re going to keep beating this drum: the best family vehicle remains the humble minivan. There are practical reasons, of course, like space and convenience. But how about sliding doors eliminating the chances of the little ones accidentally bonking the car beside you at the grocery store? How about how the lower ride height makes them drive more like cars than high-riding SUVs? Forget all of that. Those family trips to Disneyland aren’t going to pay for themselves, right? Well then it’s good that minivans are more affordable than the image-conscious SUVs out there. In pure vehicle-for-dollars amount, nothing comes close to the minivan. This short list highlights the…

Kia’s oldest model will see a dramatic update this year. The Kia Sportage has been a mainstay of the brand’s lineup since the ’90s. Now competing in the hyper-competitive compact crossover segment, the current model is, well, a little too compact when measuring up to the competition. Such is the pace of the segment. “It’s just missing any truly stand-out features to push it ahead of the pack” we said when we reviewed the 2021 Sportage. Kia is looking to change that with the 2023 model. We spent a short time poking around a pre-production example at Kia Canada’s main office, ahead of a drive in the EV6 (more on that next week). Larger, better equipped, and with styling…

Fast*, new, or affordable: pick two. Or in the case of these 10 cars, all three. While some of us might bemoan the lack of affordable performance cars out there, it’s not a barren desert of identical silver compact crossovers. In fact, even at the low price of just $30,000—two-thirds the average new-car transaction as of September 2021, according to Kelley Blue Book—there’s still plenty of performance options to be had. You won’t be swinging a V8 for this price, but that’s okay: some of these cars would demolish a turn-of-the-century V8 muscle car at the strip and at the track. And you’ll still get most of the modern amenities expected of a new car. With that out of t…

Diminutive. Tiny. Efficient. Whatever you call them, these are the smallest new cars you can buy. Some of them, as you’ll no doubt note, are not cars at all. As manufacturers continue to abandon the old style and chase crossover sales, the latter have moved in to fill the gap. To wit: Nissan’s smallest car, the “sub-compact” Versa, is nearly three feet longer than the shortest new car on sale. It doesn’t even make the cut here. To show off the diversity of the market, we’ve grouped related cars together. That’s resulted in a few surprises that we hadn’t realized. Where else are you going to see a Mitsubishi Mirage, Jeep Renegade, and Toyota GR86 all rubbing shoulders …
