The new 2017 Kia Optima plug-in hybrid made its debut at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show. Boasting a 600-mile range, the Kia Optima plug-in hybrid features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a 50-kW motor that is 42 percent more powerful than the engine used in the previous Optima Hybrid. Further supporting the plug-in hybrid system is a 9.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, giving the Optima an all-electric range of 27 miles. According to the Korean automaker, a full charge with a 240-volt Level 2 charger can be done in under three hours, while a standard Level 1 120-volt charger will take about nine. 2016 Chicago Auto Show Coverage For the Optima plug-in hybrid variant, drivers will get to select from three different modes: all-electric, hybrid and charging. Both the hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants have a Coasting Guide, which helps coach the driver when to coast or brake to maximize fuel economy.
