The all-new 2019 Kia Cerato, also known as the Forte in the United States, made its global debut at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) after teasing enthusiasts with design renderings earlier this week. The third generation Cerato features sophisticated design and desirable features that offer drivers a higher level of comfort, fuel efficiency and advanced driver assistance technologies that are aimed to make the journey a more rewarding and decidedly upscale experience. Let’s have a look. Sophisticated Design The all-new 2019 Cerato maintains its sporty and youthful image while evolving a more sophisticated appearance that nods to a number of sleek and dynamic styling cues inspired by the Stinger fastback sport sedan. Like the Stinger, the Cerato’s long hood and short deck recreate an overall fastback-like shape. The cowl point, base of the wind shield, has been moved back to afford a more athletic and well-grounded stance. Creases in the hood contribute to its muscular appearance, while its overall presence and character is enhanced by distinctive design traits on the front fascia, a fresh approach to Kia’s signature tiger nose grille, and an aggressive black lower valance. Comfortable Cabin In order to treat both driver and passengers to a more comfortable ride, the overall length, width, and height has been increased to allow for more legroom, additional cargo, and headroom. The layout of the dashboard paints a picture of a wide interior space. And the horizontal theme creates a sense of openness and avoids clutter with clean lines and minimal buttons intuitively placed. Solid Foundation The all-new 2019 Cerato builds upon an already solid structure that helped the 2018 Cerato sedan achieve an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick Plus rating strengthening its bones with additional hot-stamped components and 54 percent Advanced High-Strength Steel. Stronger seat frames are lightweight and provide a more comfortable seating position with increased lumbar support and denser seat foam for more pleasurable long-distance drives. Efficient Powertrain Under the Cerato’s longer hood sits a second-generation 2.0 liter Nu four-cylinder engine. This engine, benefitting from the Atkinson Cycle and cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system typically applied to hybrid and electric vehicles, can be paired with either a six-speed manual or Kia’s all-new Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT). The engine and in-house-built IVT are the first of a new line of highly efficient “Smart Stream” powertrains that will make their way into Kia’s future lineup. Before developing our own Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), our engineers tackled issues often associated with CVTs and applied their findings to the Cerato. CVTs are criticized for creating a rubber-band-like feel which was solved by building the IVT with adaptive style shift logic with a chain-type belt instead of a push belt, a first in the compact class resulting in a smooth and linear acceleration. Noise is another point of criticism of CVTs. This issue was solved in the Cerato by wrapping the transmission case in a sound-insulating cover to help quiet the typical “drone” reducing overall NVH levels. Brimming with Technology The Cerato allows the driver to stay connected and pay full attention to the road ahead with advanced technology and infotainment features offered. The Cerato comes with a color touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay that’s integrated neatly on the dash and within the driver’s line of sight. The car also features a wireless charging tray on the center stack eliminating the need for a charging cable. The Cerato also features a 320-watt premium sound system developed with Harman Kardon that plays music through a unique speaker hole pattern on door panels and throughout the rest of the cabin. The 2019 Kia Forte just made its debut at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, and already the Korean automaker is comparing it to one of the world’s finest exotics. You have to hand it to Kia, whether or not you like the brand. It has grown and matured in recent years, and now exudes confidence like no other. So much so, that Kia saw fit to compare its new Forte with the Lamborghini Aventador, on the track no less. But of course there’s a slight catch to the comparison, since you don’t even need to be an automotive enthusiast to know the Aventador would blow the doors off the Forte on the track. The 2019 Kia Forte spiced things up at this year’s (typically frigid) Detroit Auto Show with a hot new look and some fancy new tech under the hood that will help the car achieve 35 mpg combined. The Forte is now in its third generation and over those years, the Korean automaker has learned a lot about what compact car buyers want. This new model seems to incorporate all of those lessons and the result is this sleek new sedan that looks ready to do battle with the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. The biggest news is that this car takes a few styling cues from the well-received Kia Stinger sport sedan. The automaker moved the cowl point, essentially where the hood is, backward about five inches to give the car a more sporty appearance, mimicking the long hood, short deck profile of the Stinger. An aggressive front end is made possible with the sharp creases in the hood and the lower valence, which is blacked out. The design of the lights are also inspired by the Stinger, and so is the new “tiger nose” grille. Around back, the LED tail lights are connected by a thin horizontal piece, like the Sportage (and also the Stinger … who would’ve guessed!?). ALSO SEE: 2018 Detroit Auto Show Coverage The car is 3.2 inches longer than before and that growth translates into a more spacious cabin in terms of legroom. There’s also more cargo space with 15.1 cubic feet of storage in the trunk, which Kia says is best in class. There’s an improved layout design that looks more upscale and stylish, with circular vents and soft-touch points. Kia has also minimized the number of buttons under that standard eight-inch touchscreen. That infotainment system comes with standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and there’s also an available wireless charging system. To make things even more interesting, Kia is now offering a 320-watt Harmon/Kardon sound system with a stylish speaker grille. In terms of driver assistance features, the Forte has everything you can think of: blind spot collision warning, lane keeping assist, forward collision-avoidance assist, and adaptive cruise control are all available. Under the hood is one of the Forte’s biggest change: a new continuously variable transmission that’s been built from the ground up by Kia. The automaker says that by waiting to make its own CVT, it was able to address certain criticisms and concerns that consumers have about the transmissions, like the dreaded rubber-band feeling of acceleration. Kia says that by using a chain-type belt with a unique “adaptive” shift logic, the transmission won’t have this issue. They have also wrapped the transmission case with a sound-insulating cover to cut down on the annoying CVT drone that most of these transmissions are known for. If you’re not sold on the CVT, a six-speed manual will still be available. While the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine will retain its output ratings of 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque, the engine does have a few new tricks that will improve its efficiency. The engine can use an Atkinson Cycle now, and it also features a cooled EGR technology that is expected to help the car deliver 35 mpg combined, an improvement of 3 mpg. That’s a tall order considering the current Forte has a Top Safety Pick Plus rating by the IIHS. High-strength steel makes up 54 percent of the frame, and the car is 16 percent stiffer as well. Kia also says it has improved the steering feel of the car so that it will feel less numb and artificial, two common complaints with the current model. The compact car segment isn’t as hot as it once was, thanks to the rise in popularity of crossovers, but Kia has designed a great new Forte that’s full of enhancements. While pricing is not yet known, we’d wager that it’d be pretty competitive with the current crop of compact sedans. [See image gallery at www.autoguide.com] Kia has released design sketches for its new Forte sedan ahead of the vehicle’s debut in Detroit next week. The Korean automaker says the new Forte has adopted styling cues inspired by the Stinger sedan. As such, it has moved from a cab-forward design to a more swept-back look. It also wears Kia’s tiger nose grille and will feature separate reverse and turn signal indicators beneath the taillights. Speaking of the taillights – their horizontal layout was inspired by the Sportage CUV. A digital display with a tacked-on-the-dash look will appear, along with circular air vents that sort of remind us of Mercedes’ turbine vents. Under Kia’s new ‘Boundless for all’ vision, we are previewing a future in which the potential of mobility and transportation is limitless at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas from January 9th to the 12th. To broaden horizons with mobility services, we are demonstrating a range of new technologies as part of our new ‘ACE strategy’ to make cars more Autonomous, Connected, and Eco/Electric, alongside our ‘WiBLE’ car-sharing service. At CES 2018, we will reveal the fully-electric subcompact SUV Niro EV Concept featuring a first-ever Human-machine interface (HMI) and an advanced new ‘motion graphic’ lighting system, previewing the potential ahead of these technologies for market introduction in the near future. The Niro EV Concept’s aerodynamically-efficient body allows air to slip over, around and beneath the vehicle with ease. The traditional grille – no longer required for engine cooling – is replaced by a smooth interactive display panel, combined with ultra-slim lamp technology in the front. Inside, the cabin interior has been designed with a pure, minimalist and digital appearance, creating greater user interaction with new technologies and features. The Niro EV Concept is powered by a next-generation electric vehicle powertrain using new production technologies earmarked for near-future EVs, and suggests a driving range of 383 kilometers with zero tailpipe emissions. Energy is provided by a high-capacity 64 kWh lithium-polymer battery pack, paired with a powerful 150 kW electric motor. With a silent powertrain, and in anticipation of the car’s frequent urban and suburban driving, the concept boasts new technologies to enhance pedestrian safety, one of them being the new Active Pedestrian Warning System (APWS). The APWS features a combination of front view cameras, object recognition technology and front speakers that sound an alert specifically targeted at the pedestrian crossing in front of the car to warn them of the car’s presence. APWS is matched by the concept’s new interactive lighting system, which offers users and pedestrians highly-intuitive visual communication with the vehicle. In conjunction with the Niro EV Concept reveal, we are presenting a range of interactive exhibits that combine existing and future technologies to demonstrate how vehicles could be optimized for enhanced connectivity as they become more autonomous. Introducing three interactive, cockpit-style exhibits, the first cockpit gives visitors a chance to experience the Niro EV Concept’s new human-machine interface (HMI) with enhanced interaction with the vehicle. The second cockpit presents the Concept’s Separate Sound Control System that enhances the occupant comfort. And the third cockpit enables visitors to interact with our developing autonomous drive technologies through Virtual Reality (VR) simulators. Enabling urban and suburban mobility, we are announcing plans for the ‘WiBLE’ car-sharing service, which offers vehicles to customers who need to drive but may not own a car of their own or who desire more driving convenience in city centers. ‘WiBLE’, first launched in Korea in 2017, is short for ‘Widely Accessible’. The all-electric concept car will make its world debut in Las Vegas at CES 2018 and the Korean automaker will also use the show to outline its vision for future mobility and technology strategies. Not only does the new concept represent the next step in the company’s ongoing journey to electrification, it also features a never-seen-before human-machine interface (HMI), along with an advanced new “motion graphic” lighting system. Attendees to the show also get a chance to see three interactive, cockpit-style exhibits that are designed to show how Kia will incorporate new technologies to enhance communication and interaction between occupants and vehicles. Those new technologies include new advanced driver assistance technologies and pioneering HMI functions, along with the world’s first in-car 5G connection. All of Kia’s presentations at CES 2018 fall under the automaker’s new “Boundless for all” vision, which Kia says will bring a future in which opportunities for mobility and transportation are limitless. The company is also demonstrating a range of new technologies as part of its new “ACE” strategy to make its cars more Autonomous, Connected, and Eco/Electric. As for the Eco/Electric element, Kia will introduce 16 new advanced powertrain vehicles by 2025, including a range of new hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles, as well as an all-new fuel cell vehicle in 2020. One of those vehicles will be the Kia Niro EV, previewed by the concept in Las Vegas. Details haven’t been revealed just yet, but Kia did say the EV offers 238 miles of driving range on a single charge. The company also announced the addition of UVO Agent for compatible Kia vehicles that allows Kia owners to interact with the Google Assistant on their phones or Google Home to execute a variety of remote commands. The Korean automaker says the integration with Google Assistant is now available on the 2018 Niro PHEV, Soul EV, Optima PHEV, and K900. Simple voice commands such as, “Tell UVO to start my Soul EV,” or “Tell UVO to lock my Niro,” can be executed remotely through the new feature. You might believe the cheaper a car, the less it costs to fix after a collision. But that’s not necessarily the case. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released a new report that uses the latest claims information from HLDI to determine collision losses for 2014-2016 model year passenger vehicles. To determine which cars are cheapest to repair following a collision, IIHS looked at claim frequencies per 100 insured vehicle years, the average loss payment per claim (claim severity), and the average payments per insured vehicle year (overall losses). SEE ALSO: Top 15 Safest Cars of 2018 According to IIHS Some of the results may surprise you, especially with the amount of pickup trucks on the list. 10. Subaru Outback The Subaru Outback starts things off as one of the cheapest cars to crash, with the wagon having a claim frequency of 6.0, claim severity of $3,692, and overall losses of $222. 9. Subaru Outback with EyeSight Technically a tie with the same overall losses of $222, the Subaru Outback equipped with the Japanese automaker’s EyeSight technology has a claim frequency of 5.9, but its claim severity is slightly higher at $3,750. 8. Ford F-350 SuperCab One of several pickup trucks on the list, the Ford F-350 SuperCab comes in eighth place with overall losses of $221. Claim frequency registers at 4.6, while claim severity is $4,789. 7. Ram 2500 Crew Cab The Ram 2500 Crew Cab is cheaper to crash than the Ford F-350 SuperCab, with overall losses averaging $215. Claim frequency for the Ram 2500 is higher however at 6.2, but the claim severity is quite a bit lower than the F-350 at $3,451. In fact, the Ram 2500 Crew Cab has the lowest claim severity of all the vehicles on the list. 6. Jeep Wrangler Two-Door The Jeep Wrangler is the sixth cheapest car to crash on the list, with a claim frequency of 3.1 and overall losses of $205. Claim severity is second highest on the list however, at $6,555. 5. Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible Perhaps the most surprising car on the list is the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible. Not surprising, however, is its low claim frequency of 2.8, and its claim severity of $7,145 — highest of all cars on the list. Overall losses, however, are $204, landing the droptop ‘Vette on the fifth spot. 4. Kia Soul Electric The funky Kia Soul EV has overall losses of $189, making it one of the cheapest cars to crash. Claim frequency is 5.0 for the electric crossover, while claim severity is $3,786. 3. Ford F-250 The cheaper of the two Ford Super Duty pickups to crash is the F-250, with overall losses at $187. Compared to the F-350, however, the F-250 has a higher claim severity at $4,940. Its 3.8 claim frequency value is lower than the F-350 though. 2. Ram 1500 Ram’s popular 1500 pickup is one of the cheapest vehicles to crash, with overall losses of $185. Claim severity, at $4,065, is higher than the 2500 while claim frequency is lower at 4.5. 1. Smart ForTwo Electric The cheapest car to crash according to IIHS and HLDI data is the Smart ForTwo Electric. It’s probably not very surprising, considering the subcompact doesn’t even look like a car to some people. Claim frequency is 3.3, while overall losses are $162. [See image gallery at www.autoguide.com] The inspiration for the new Kia Stinger came from grand touring cars of the 1970s. These cars took people on long trips from London to Paris or New York to Los Angeles. GT cars have to successfully blend four characteristics that are usually mutually exclusive: They need to be comfortable yet quick, and stylish yet able to carry a bunch of luggage. Cars typically can do one but not the other. The Kia Stinger is the Korean automaker’s first attempt at a grand touring car that blends style, performance, comfort, and versatility, and they did such a good job with it that we at AutoGuide.com recently awarded it as our 2018 Car of the Year. We celebrated the Kia Stinger’s win by doing exactly what it was created for: a grand tour. We took the Stinger GT on a road trip across four American states. Starting and ending in Las Vegas, we drove it through Utah, Arizona, California, and Nevada. Driving behind a lime green Lamborghini Gallardo, someone shouted, “Hey, nice car!” I naturally assumed they were taking to the Lambo driver, but then they pointed their camera in the Stinger’s direction and gave me a thumbs up. I caught the Lamborghini driver scowling at me from his rear-view mirror. Anxious to get out of the manufactured circus that is Las Vegas and stretch the Stinger’s legs, we left Nevada and booked it to Zion National Park in Utah, a common bucket list destination famous for its staggering views and monumental rock formations. Flipping the Stinger into Sport mode, the pre-dawn drive up the curvy mountain roads to see the sunrise at Zion was doubly rewarding. Adaptive headlights made sure I was able to see into the next corner, making the drive in the dark faster and a lot less stressful. One way to describe the Kia Stinger is as a budget Audi A7. Although the A7 is a superior car, most people can’t afford an A7 and the Stinger is able to do a convincing job for much less money. The Stinger GT that accompanied us on our trip was a rear-wheel-drive, twin-turbo V6-powered model with 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. The precise and responsive steering, the V6’s healthy amount of power, rear-drive architecture, and well-engineered, balanced chassis made the twisty canyon roads legitimately entertaining to pilot, while the adaptive cruise control and active lane keep assist made long slogs on the interstate much more bearable. Our trip took us from freezing cold and snow to the heat and sun of the desert and the heated and ventilated seats made each climate much more comfortable and we used the USB ports often to keep our devices charged. The head-up display was also handy. Through our 2,100-mile trip, the Stinger averaged 23.5 mpg, which is surprising since we were driving as if we were in Cannonball Run, but we made it through our trip without a single speeding ticket. Two things the Kia Stinger could improve on would be more comfortable seats (although it does have a decent driving position, the seats could be more supportive for long drives), and a better navigation system. The voice recognition can be pretty dim at times and the navigation system seems to be missing some key map information. The Stinger also has too many fake vents, but that’s just a personal pet peeve. On our drive from Zion to Moab in Utah to see Arches National Park, we were getting tired and stopped at a random rest stop at the side of the interstate to get some fresh air. What met us was even more refreshing than we hoped. An enormous canyon dotted with alien-looking rock formations and trees that were twisted by decades of abuse by the wind were glowing in the in the golden hour sun. Even compared to Zion and the famous Arches National Park, it was one of the most stunning things we saw and it was completely unplanned, barely a blip on anyone’s radar and definitely not on anyone’s bucket list. ALSO SEE: 2018 Kia Stinger Review | Kia Stinger GT Review Heading south toward Navajo Nation to see Monument Valley at the border of Utah and Arizona where the road that the iconic scene from Forrest Gump was filmed, we took a wrong turn and ended up driving the Stinger through a decrepit little town called Bluff in Utah, where we discovered an abandoned gas station and trading post. Sitting out front was a rusty 1950’s Buick Eight with rotted-out tires and the best patina I’ve ever seen. Parking the Stinger next to this relic, it was a stark reminder of how far cars have come in a few decades. And how much Kia has progressed in just a few short years. Stumbling onto forgotten little towns and abandoned buildings became quite common the more we drove. Taking an unplanned detour, we found ourselves along the historic Route 66, once a shining gem of America during the post-Second World War boom. Today, much of Route 66 is now crumbling after being rendered obsolete by faster and better-maintained interstates. This left many towns that dotted the iconic route in various stages of decay. Many once-booming towns that catered to travelers doing road trips have been abandoned due to lack of traffic, leaving a graveyard of crumbling buildings, burnt-out and peeling fluorescent signs, and a glimpse of what the U.S. was like in the height of the 1950s. We discovered abandoned diners with sugar and cutlery still on tables but covered in a thick layer of desert dust, retro gas stations with worn down pumps that looked more like tombstones, and even a deserted school and an abandoned mining town. Making a random stop on our way back to Las Vegas to end our trip, we drove through a town called Amboy, California. We stopped because I desperately needed to use the restroom, but something about this place was off and a bit spooky. Although we admired the funky but crumbling 1950s architecture and fading signage, we left without thinking too much about it, but later learned that Amboy is officially listed as a ghost town. At one point, someone tried to sell Amboy on eBay and currently, only four people are listed as living there. Amboy was a booming town when Route 66 was at its peak, but people stopped driving through and the town slowly lost its luster. Learning about the history of forgotten places like Amboy and experiencing them in their current state of decay was much more eye-opening to me than any of the National Parks and planned bucket list destinations we visited. More than 2,100 miles, 44 hours behind the wheel, and countless memories later, two things surprised me the most. The first was how interested people were with the Kia Stinger. Nearly everywhere we stopped — and we stopped a lot — someone was curious about the Stinger, was really excited to learn about it, or just wanted to tell us how cool it was. I have not gotten this type of interest in a car since I drove a Lamborghini. Every time we parked it, went for a meal, got gas or a car wash, went to a rest stop, or were sitting in traffic, people wanted to ask us about it. “I had never seen a Kia with Brembos before,” someone at a gas station told us on our way to the Grand Canyon admiring the bright red brake calipers. “It looks like a Maserati, and then I thought it was an Audi. I thought they only made Optimas and stuff.” At a rest stop in Arizona, I exited the restroom to see a group of people surrounding the Stinger. One guy shouted across the parking lot to his friend, “It’s a Kia … it’s like what would happen if Koreans made a BMW.” He told me later that his friend didn’t believe that Kia made performance cars and was even more surprised to find out it had a twin-turbo V6 and was rear-drive. “Kia’s come a long way,” he said before we drove off. The Kia Stinger helped us discover so much during our seven days on the road. Discovering abandoned and forgotten places that are scattered across America along the once grand Route 66 and the stories they hide, meeting the characters in between, and finding beauty in decay brought new meaning to our road trip. The Kia Stinger got us there and the journey wouldn’t have been the same without it. When talking about cars, the focus tends to heavily fall on physical qualities. Today, however, we will be zeroing in on the sound. Let’s talk about experiencing Kia by sound – more specifically- the Stinger by sound. The Stinger, as Kia’s very first fastback sport sedan, sings with a low, thrilling hum under its hood and a powerful growl through its exhaust pipes. The Stinger offers a choice of three different turbocharged engines that feature sounds designed to be consistent with their layout: 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engine, a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6, and a 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine. As the first Kia to be outfitted with a new active sound system, sound engineers paired the system with the five drive modes of the Stinger to satisfy customers’ desire to fully enjoy the sound of the engine. Drivers can adjust the level of engine noise in the cabin to be louder and more aggressive in tone by switching between the system’s eco, comfort, smart, sport, and custom modes. When talking about engine sounds in general, there are three contributing features: the sound of air flowing into the engine, the mechanical sound of the engine, and the sound from the exhaust system. Turbochargers act as extra filters and the pathway for sound. The extra plumbing and gates ensure a more consistent flow and a long detour for the sound going in and out of the engine through the system. This results in a more sensual sound reverberating from the engine and a clean, powerful growl through the exhaust. And what happens if you have not just one, but two turbochargers? It means that the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 has double the amount of extra plumbing and gates for the sound to travel through – the more room, the more possibilities. Twin-turbochargers also equally split the amount of entering and exiting air travelling through the system before coming together again. It is, simply put, engineered in a way so that “noise” is reduced, creating a sportier sound. The sound of Stinger was orchestrated a bit further by Air Design USA to really hit the spot for car enthusiasts at the 2017 SEMA Show held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The modified Stinger in orange, Stinger GT Federation, had its exhaust sound enhanced with a K&N cold-air intake and a low-restriction, quad-tipped Borla exhaust. This modification allowed the Stinger to breathe more freely, giving it more space to reverberate, adding more depth to the growl of the exhaust. Overall, sound is an incredibly important element in bringing a vehicle together as a whole. “The sound and the vibrations that a car has, those are the things that make you crazy”. Kia has teased a new electric concept car based on its Niro crossover that will debut at CES 2018 next week. Kia says the EV concept car combines its “design strengths” with a highly efficient battery-electric powertrain. It represents the next step in the Korean brand’s electric vehicle efforts, and is a signal of where the Kia brand will be headed in coming years. The concept will also feature a “human-machine interface” or HMI from Kia that has never been seen before. It’s not clear what it will entail, but we’re expecting some sort of large interior touchscreen that allows you to change the car’s various settings and drive modes. Kia also says it will have a new “motion graphic lighting system” that it says could potentially come to market sometime in the future. This will come in the way of an exhibit called “Beyond Autonomous Driving” that will display Kia’s existing autonomous vehicle technology alongside future self-driving technologies that it hopes to one day bring to market. The exhibit will also feature three cockpit displays, showing different ways the automaker could incorporate new technologies into an autonomous vehicle’s cabin. “Virtual reality, self-driving cars, and full vehicle connectivity were all once considered technologies of the distant future. As they rapidly become a reality, Kia is exploring how to adapt these new technologies for its customers. At CES we will share our strategy and vision for future mobility, and exhibit a range of advanced technologies that our customers can look forward to,” said Kia R&D boss Dr. Woong-cheol Yang. The red nose Kia We, of course, didn’t forget the reindeer. Santa himself asked the Sportage compact SUV and the vibrant Rio compact sedan to guide his sled on Christmas eve. Oh, how the other reindeer loved them. De-KIA-rations With Santa happily on his way to complete his journey in the Stinger alongside the red-nosed Sportage and Rio, our fans excitedly waited for the Christmas morning sun to rise. Stockings adorned in our signature red were hung over the crackling fireplace fully prepared to be stuffed with Christmas joy. Gifts were waiting under a dazzling tiger-nose grille Christmas tree and doors welcomed loved ones with wreaths bedazzled with shiny Kia vehicle ornaments. Last, but not least, everyone remembered to throw on a festive sweater to keep the warmth and joy within. Some concept cars never make it to production, but these days, most are realistic visions of what’s to come. This past year’s concept cars may not have been the most exciting we’ve seen compared to other years, but many of them will be heading to production and should stick to their overall design. AutoGuide.com‘s Auto Show Coverage Other concept cars that really caught our eye in 2017 preview future design languages, while there’s a couple that we really hope get signed off for production. 10. MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept MINI is having a bit of an identity crisis, at least in the U.S. This year, the company showed off an all-electric car concept that previews the British automaker’s first EV, but that isn’t terribly exciting for most car enthusiasts. What is however is the John Cooper Works GP Concept, proving that MINI can make badass track cars. The concept is significantly wider than the standard MINI Cooper with plenty of carbon fiber on the body to shed weight. The aggressive styling is what we believe the MINI brand truly needs to stay relevant, but sadly, it’s likely the brand will be focusing more on electrification than large rear spoilers. 9. Toyota FT-4X Concept Although the Toyota FT-4X was mostly disappointing for those hoping to see a true successor for the FJ Cruiser, it’s a realistic concept that likely previews a future model. It’s no secret that compact crossovers are wildly successful in today’s market and since the concept rides on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) it wouldn’t be very difficult to put into production. The concept was designed for Generation Y city dwellers in mind, with Toyota saying its research shows that basecamp for Gen Y explorers was oftentimes the destination itself. The “Multi-Hatch” is one of the main features of the concept, which opens two ways – horizontally and vertically. This gives the FT-4X added versatility depending on how the vehicle is being used. 8. Volkswagen I.D. Buzz Concept As Volkswagen works to repair its image from the massive diesel scandal, one of its primary focuses is electrification. The I.D. family is already growing and we can’t help but love Volkswagen’s willingness to develop a Microbus of the future with the I.D. Buzz Concept. The German automaker has already confirmed the I.D. Buzz is heading to production, and you shouldn’t expect to see any significant changes to its design 7. BMW Concept 8 Series BMW is betting big on high-end luxury vehicles, and the first step is the new 8 Series flagship coupe. The German automaker impressed with a stunning concept that modernizes its current design language, while adding a bit of style for the future. Looking to take on other luxury sports cars from companies like Aston Martin and Bentley, the 8 Series could be one of the best looking cars in the segment if the production version stays true to the concept. 6. Mercedes-AMG GT Concept While BMW is making headlines this year with a stunning coupe concept, Mercedes-AMG is looking to shake up the four-door coupe segment. Mercedes arguably introduced the first four-door coupe model with the CLS, and the AMG GT Concept is basically a four-door version of the awesome GT sports car. The model will be entirely developed by AMG, and you should expect to see hybrid powertrains for the production version. 5. Kia Proceed Concept Wagons and shooting brakes aren’t terribly popular in the U.S., which makes us really sad when we saw the Kia Proceed Concept earlier this year. The Korean automaker says the concept is “a bold vision for the future” and gives hints as to what the next-generation cee’d could look like. It’s basically a wagon version of the Stinger that’s already surprisingly stylish from bumper to bumper. One can only hope if the Proceed Concept heads to production that it will somehow, someway find its way to North America. 4. BMW Concept Z4 The BMW Z4 is one of the most anticipated roadsters heading to dealerships in the near future and BMW really got our appetites going with the stunning Concept Z4. Riding on a new sports car platform that was jointly developed with Toyota, the new Z4 will surely turn some heads if the production version is similar to the concept. It’s just a matter of time before the actual BMW Z4 debuts and we will finally get to see if the company’s partnership with Toyota has resulted in something truly special. 3. Mazda Vision Coupe Concept Making its debut later in the year at the Tokyo Motor Show was the Mazda Vision Coupe Concept. We already consider the current Mazda6 one of the best looking cars in its segment, and if the next-generation model follows the Vision Coupe Concept, then it might just be the best looking car in that market. In fact, we hope design elements from the Vision Coupe Concept eventually find their way to other Mazda models, as it’s one of the most attractive concepts we laid eyes on this year. 2. Infiniti Prototype 9 There’s so much to love about the Infiniti Prototype 9, which made a very surprising debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The retro-inspired concept doesn’t exactly preview a future model or Infiniti’s future design language, but it is a fully-functioning prototype powered by an electric motor that’s similar to what’s found in the new Nissan Leaf. Maybe, just maybe, Infiniti decides to produce a limited number of the Prototype 9 – but that’s very unlikely. 1. Honda Urban and Sports EV Concepts Most concept cars feature flashy styling that’s designed to grab attention at auto shows. But Honda did something entirely different with its Urban and Sports EV Concepts. The company went straight to the basics, and somehow it works marvelously. In fact, the retro Urban EV concept might be our favorite concept car all year after debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Here’s to hoping Honda adds some real excitement to the EV market by putting either (or both!) of these into production. Stinger, Optima, Cadenza… how do our vehicles get their names? A name should embody the overall personality, design, and feel of the car as a whole. The very first step in naming a car is to define its character. Is it fast? Is it bold? Is it melodious? Clear references – names of animals for instance – are largely preferred. The proposed name also must be checked for violation of trademarks. Most importantly, the name must be cross-checked for cultural context in each and every region of the world. A name in one language can mean something completely different, which calls for a whole new name just for that region. Some of our very own vehicles often sport different names by region – read on to see what they are. The Carnival vs. Sedona This family-friendly minivan suited for all kinds of family errands, events, and trips is known by two different names. Some regions refer to the car as the Grand Carnival, a name that stems from the Latin word for “festival”, emphasizing its free, leisure-seeking image. In other regions, the car is known as the Sedona, named after a small town in Arizona. The name was bestowed on the minivan to capture its outdoorsy and elegant essence without being too geographically obvious. The K-series Instead of naming each sedan, Kia in South Korea groups its line of sedans together, creating the K series. The K is taken from “Kia”, “Korea”, and the Greek word “Kratos” meaning active. The number that comes after the K increases as the class of the car increases. Cerato vs. Forte vs. K3 This stylish compact sedan is widely known as the Forte but is also known as the Cerato, both names representing the car’s bold characteristics. In particular, the Forte comes from the Middle French word “fort” meaning strong. Forte also happens to be a musical term that signals the musician to play – you guessed it – strong when appearing on sheet music. The Forte is known as the K3 in South Korea. Optima vs. K5 Except for South Korea, the rest of the world refers to this sophisticated sedan as the Optima. “Optima” comes from the Latin word “Optimus” meaning best, bonus. Considering everything from its design to power, one cannot deny that the Optima is the best. In South Korea, the Optima is referred to as the K5. Quoris vs. K9 vs. K900 This premium luxury sedan combines the two words “core” and “quality” in its name Quoris. While this is the name known most-widely internationally, the United States mimics the South Korean label of K9. But the United States adds two zeros – K900 – to avoid confusion with a police dog.
