Hyundai’s new Georgia EV plant, won’t just make Hyundai-branded EVs. Announced about the same time as the groundbreaking ceremony, Kia announced that the new Savanna, Georgia EV plant under construction will also be used to produce Kia EVs, too. This $5.54 billion plant will produce both EVs and EV batteries and should start pumping out EVs by the start of 2025. In all, it’s a part of an agreement between the state of Georgia and Hyundai to provide around 8,100 jobs and help develop the state into a high-tech manufacturing hub. This news dovetails neatly with Kia’s already existing Georgia area manufacturing. Kia’s CEO Sean Yoon claims that in tandem with its suppliers, Kia has already created more than 14,000 jobs in Georgia. Currently, the West Point, Georgia factory produces cars like the Kia Telluride. Although both Hyundai and Kia are sister brands, their actual corporate relationship is more complicated. For example, Kia and Hyundai mostly don’t share vehicle manufacturing facilities; the Hyundai Palisade is sourced from Korea, but its mechanical twin the Kia Telluride is made in Georgia. Thus, this strategic tie-up likely is a way for both brands to band together to make more competitively priced EVs in the face of the US’s Inflation Reduction Act which disincentivizes non-North American-made EVs. The Kia Niro and EV6 are both Korean-made, thus ineligible for the $7,500 plug-in tax credit, under the new rules introduced on August 16. We aren’t sure which vehicles will be produced at the Savannah, Georgia EV plant, but Hyundai has said it will be capable of making five or six different models at one time. The 2023 Kia Niro EV is only a little more expensive than last year’s model. Kia just revealed pricing levels for the fully-electric version of the Kia Niro; a base Kia Niro EV will cost a buyer $40,745, including the $1,295 destination fee. This time, the Kia Niro EV is only offered in two trims, the price leading Wind, and the upper trimmed Wave. The Wave trim will set a buyer back $45,745, including the destination fee. In all, the base Kia Niro EV is roughly $10,000 more expensive than the standard hybrid Niro. Both trims are well equipped for the price and class, getting driver safety goodies like lane keep assist. Stepping up from the Wind to the Wave trim adds creature comforts like vegan leather seats and power seats for the driver and passenger. The Kia Niro EV is powered by a 201-horsepower front-mounted motor, good for a range of 253 miles. On paper, the Kia Niro does look to be competitive, albeit there may be some caveats there. The similarly sized and similar range Chevrolet Bolt EUV can be had for an electrifyingly low $28,000. Also, unlike the Kia Niro EV, the Bolt EUV will be eligible for the inflation Reduction Act’s plug in tax credit next year, meaning its real-world transaction price may end up a lot cheaper than the electric Niro. Hyundai is hurrying to make its EV efforts even stronger. In a bombshell announcement made to the public, Hyundai announced its intent to overhaul and streamline its EV operations in several key ways. The whole move will cost at least a staggering $12.6 billion to develop, starting from now, until 2030. Hyundai wants a “software-defined” EV experience, to bring the business to its EV competition. First up, Hyundai is developing a new operating system that will be deployed in all Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis vehicles, including ICE and hybrid ones, by 2025. This new OS is designed to work at “blazing speeds” and offer over-the-air updates; a move that Hyundai says will increase the resale vehicle of its vehicles. For example, a Hyundai vehicle capable of OTA upgrades could increase functionality over time, similar to how many Tesla vehicles have gained new functions as the brand has sent out updates over the air. These OTA updates will be all-encompassing, anything from driver comfort, convenience, safety, connectivity, or even performance. The driver won’t have to visit the dealer for these updates, either. Then, Hyundai is developing two new dedicated EV platforms; one called eS and the other called eM. The eM platform will underpin most all Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis EVs, and the brand promises an increase of up to 50% in range. It will offer Level 3 autonomous driving features, and also incorporate Hyundai’s forthcoming OTA features. The eS platform is a skateboard-style EV platform meant for PBVs, or “purpose-built vehicles”, like delivery vans, rideshare cars, or taxis. Both platforms are meant to be modular, making things simpler and easier for Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis to make. The fruits of Hyundai’s efforts should come out as soon as 2025. The 2023 Kia Niro Plug-in hybrid might be a solid buy. Pricing for the 2023 Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid (now formally marked as PHEV) has been unveiled, and on paper, it looks to be a pretty competitive little crossover. The 2023 Kia Niro PHEV starts at $33,740 for the EX trim and $39,490 for the SX Premium trim. The PHEV only comes in two trims; no base LX PHEV, though. Those prices don’t include the $1,295 destination fee. All 2023 Kia Niro PHEVs have an upgraded version of the 1.6-liter, electric motor, and six-speed dual-clutch automatic – the Niro PHEV has a larger electric motor than the standard Niro Hybrid. Meaning, instead of 139 horsepower, the Niro PHEV is good for 180 horsepower. An 11.1-kilowatt-hour battery allows the Niro for up to 33 miles of EV range; higher than the last generation’s 26 miles of range. In states like California, the PHEV Niro is eligible for single-occupant HOV lane access, when its regular hybrid sibling is not. Still, the Niro PHEV faces stiff competition. Although it doesn’t offer as much EV range the Toyota Prius Prime is a little bit cheaper. Also, because the Kia Niro is made in South Korea, it is ineligible for US plug-in vehicle tax credits. The Ford Escape PHEV is more expensive than the Kia Niro PHEV, but after tax credits, some variants of the PHEV Escape could work out to be cheaper than the Niro PHEV.
