The 2017 Kia Optima has earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. The award only applies to vehicles built after March 2017 when equipped with optional front crash prevention and LED headlights with High Beam Assist. The 2017 Kia Optima earned good ratings on all five crashworthiness tests, while the optional front crash prevention system gets a superior rating. When equipped with LED headlights with High Beam Assist, it receives a good rating in IIHS headlamp testing. Get the Flash Player to see this player. As far as compact commuter cars go, my 2013 Kia Forte5 is an appliance like any other. It’s the car I leave behind when I pick up different vehicles to test each week, and even though the odometer only shows about 37,000 miles (60,000 kilometers) most of those were racked up on the highway and took a heavy toll on the tires that have been on the car since new. With plans to get a new set of all-seasons in the not-too-distant future, I jumped at the opportunity to test out the Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring tires to find out what they’re made of. A True Touring Tire Billed as the brand’s premium touring tire, the all-season CS5 Ultra Touring is geared towards everyday drivability. That means a focus on smoothness and quietness — more on both of those later — while offering traction in a variety of conditions. (The CS5 is snow-rated, though folks living somewhere that’s routinely exposed to winter conditions should opt for a dedicated set of winter tires.) With its comfort-first focus, the CS5 Ultra Touring isn’t built to tackle an autocross course — though Cooper didn’t neglect dynamic driving altogether. Instead, the tire was developed with unique features that allow it to better withstand the rigors of daily driving. With its asymmetrical tread pattern, the CS5 was designed to be rotated to any of a vehicle’s four corners to prolong its life and promote even wear. ALSO SEE: Why You Absolutely Need Winter Tires, Even if You Have All-Wheel Drive When it comes to the makeup of the tread pattern itself, the CS5 boasts some unique features that set it apart from others on the market. While water-tackling sipes are used on plenty of tires, the thin grooves here are cut deeper into the tire so they last longer into the tire’s life. But they aren’t just cut deeper, and feature interlocking ridges that stabilize the tread to maximize road surface contact. The CS5 also features what Cooper calls Stabiledge, a series of tiny bumpers that keep the tire’s tread blocks open for improved traction and turning response. Noticeably Quieter With the tires fitted to the Forte’s 16-inch factory wheels, a newfound quietness quickly emerged. Few would say the first-generation Kia Forte5 of having a quiet cabin, with a fair amount of wind and road noise making its way inside. While the CS5 Ultra Touring didn’t hush things completely, they did keep much of it to a minimum. But maybe a better sign of the quality of these CS5s is the smoothness they bring to the drive. A good set of all-season tires is going to provide a smooth ride with a low rolling resistance, something these tires definitely deliver. With the relatively tall profile of the 205/55/R16 tires we tested, the CS5 Ultra Touring provided a decent first line of defense against bumps and cracks in the road. Plenty of Traction No matter how new a set of all-season tires is, it’s not going to transform a commuter car like my Forte5 into some sort of grab-happy sports car. However, the CS5 Ultra Touring does offer a decent amount of grip on both wet and dry pavement. And it was during the slalom test that the tires’ added level of adhesion was most noticeable, along with a tack-sharp turn-in response that didn’t previously exist. The factory tires had a tendency to skate somewhat under the heavy lateral loads that come with a pylon run. That problem all but vanished with the CS5s strapped to the wheels, with grip seeming to stick around longer — especially towards the outer limit of adhesion. The tires didn’t want to break loose as the car jostled around one pylon to the next, instead showing an eagerness to keep grabbing as g forces put all the momentum on the outside wheels. ALSO SEE: Continental ControlContact Sport A/S Tire Review Likewise, the tires responded well to brake input, helping slow the car in approximately 140 ft (42.7 meters) from 60 mph (97 km/h). While that’s not quite as short as the stopping distances of newer cars of this class, it’s about what I expected from a four-year-old Forte5, and is certainly no worse than before. The Verdict: Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring Tire Review When it comes tires, there’s a fine line between making a decision driven by pragmatism and making one driven by price. If you drive a compact commuter car like my Kia Forte5 then there’s no need to spend a small fortune on a set of performance tires when a set of all-seasons will do. On the flip side, it’s also important not to take the cheap route just to save a few bucks. Tires do, after all, play an important role in on-road comfort and safety. At about $80 to $120 a tire, the Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring falls somewhere in between, offering plenty of bang for your buck. As one of the highest mountain passes in Peru, the road offers fantastic views of the rocky peaks. Once regarded as one of the world’s most dangerous roads, the route is now paved for drivers seeking the thrill and adventure of its winding curves. Côte d’Azur, France France is known for having some of the best driving roads in the world and Côte d’Azur, also known as the French Riviera, is a stand-out location for exciting drives and incredible scenery. Providing excellent views of majestic mountains and the crystal Mediterranean coastline, the French Riviera stretch has no shortage of historic towns and urban hotspots for additional sightseeing. Jebel Hafeet, United Arab Emirates Jebel Hafeet has been voted one of the greatest driving roads on the planet by a number of international travel magazines. The winding ribbon of black tarmac that runs up the rocky terrain of the peak provides a striking visual experience with wonderful panoramas of the surroundings. The smooth and well maintained roads of Jebel Hafeet are an excellent opportunity to test out and explore the performance and power of your car, which will suffer minimal wear and tear as it sweeps through the bends and curves ahead. The London Marathon is one of six international long-distance races and a top annual fund raising event. The race attracts more than thirty thousand amateur runners who train rigorously to complete the 42.195 km around the River Thames and raise money for various charity organizations. This year, two members of the Kia Motors UK team joined the challenge. President and Chief executive Paul Philpott and Customer Service Manager Sonia Appleby stepped up to the course after more than a year of training to finish the race and raise more than £45,000 for the charities of their choice. Mr. Philpott ran to support Kia’s UK charity partner The Children’s Trust, an organization that provides a support system for young people affected by brain injuries. Mr. Philpott completed the long-distance course in 4 hours and 17 minutes, raising more than £37,000. Ms. Appleby finished in 5 hours and 5 minutes, raising another £8,000 on behalf of the Shooting Star Chase organization. The money she has raised will be used to provide specialized hospice care and support for children with life-limiting conditions and their families. “Completing the London Marathon was a fantastic experience and it was a privilege to take part on behalf of The Children’s Trust,” Mr. Philpott said of the race. Ms. Appleby added, “It has been a hard year building up to the marathon – but it was worth every minute.” Congratulations to both runners on this magnificent feat. Your car’s dashboard is a hub of vital information to assist you while you drive. The instrument cluster – located right behind the steering wheel – is especially helpful when you are on the road. Complexly wired but simply presented, the car’s control panel is designed to foretell any signs of trouble. Those who have spent years behind the wheel are mostly familiar with the many gauges, displays and lights that make up the dashboard but sometimes even experienced drivers can encounter warning indicators that they have never seen before. Let’s learn about some of the warning lights and signals that you may come across while you’re on the road. Kia’s dashboard contains a combination of universally recognized signs and symbols that are unique only to the brand. The large gauges monitor fundamental functions such as speed, gas levels, car mileage, engine temperature and engine operation speed (in revolutions per minute). These analog gauges provide the basic information for drivers to utilize during their day-to-day vehicle operation. Because driving is usually relatively problem-free, these gauges will often be the center of your focus when you drive. However, the dashboard is also the first to communicate any signs of vehicle trouble on the off chance that things do go awry. The designs and hieroglyphics found on the cluster cover a wide range of issues. Because some of the lights signify serious issues, it is important to never ignore any signs that pop up while driving. Green is Go Pay close attention to the colors of the symbols on the dashboard. Symbols that light up green most often communicate the status of the vehicle. (From left) Cruise control indicator, Active Eco indicator, trunk open indicator Symbols illuminate in green when a certain system of the car is active, such as cruise control or the eco-driving system. Often when the trunk, car door or the sunroof is open or not closed securely, the corresponding symbols light up to notify drivers who may be unaware. Yellow for Safety Yellow lights indicate safety concerns, signaling drivers to be cautious or aware of a potential problem. While the issues may not necessarily require immediate action, yellow light symbols are an advisory warning that the vehicle should be check out at when it is safe to do so. (From left) Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Drivers are alerted to low tire pressure and emission control system malfunction via the TPMS and MIL warning indicators. When roads are icy or slippery, the ESC symbol will start to blink, indicating that the system has activated automatically to monitor driving conditions. If the ESC symbol lights up and stays on, it means that the system may not be working properly and a check-up with an authorized service center is advised. Red Means Caution A red light means that the vehicle has a significant problem such as low fluid levels or engine problems. If a red light appears on your dash, it is almost always a good idea to pull over right away and address the issue. If you are unable to stop, drive with the utmost caution. (From left) Battery charging system warning, engine temperature warning, master warning indicator Problems with the car’s electrical charging system or engine temperature are serious issues that will have long term consequences on your vehicle if not addressed properly. A master warning will be issued when your vehicle is running low on fluids or if additional maintenance is required. To address red issue warnings, it is recommended that you take your car to an authorized Kia service center. When turn the ignition, the first thing you notice is that all the warning lights light up momentarily. Kia cars are always programmed to self-check that all indicator lights are in working order. These self-checks make sure that drivers are always well-informed and up-to-date on the status of their vehicles. Furthermore, the number of informational and warnings lights often differ by model and trim level. Read through the owner’s manual to familiarize yourself with the different symbols and their meanings before taking off in your Kia. Driving around with dashboard lights on (in cases of yellow and red warnings) for an extended period of time can be extremely damaging to your vehicle. Who doesn’t enjoy sun, sand and soccer? This year’s FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup took place in the Bahamas, providing the perfect blend of great weather, beautiful scenery and friendly competition that enticed spectators and players alike. Beach football teams representing 16 countries gathered in Nassau to compete for the biennial championship title. Crowds that packed the stands went wild as teams showed off their best skills and moves for the ultimate win. The festive and lively atmosphere of the Bahamas further boosted enthusiasm for the event. A FIFA partner since 2007, Kia Motors took part in making the two weeks of heated competition all the more exciting. A total of 33 official tournament vehicles were provided to assist players and officials getting to and from the event site. Four of our prized vehicles – the Sportage, Cadenza, Optima and Cerato (Forte) – were on display for audiences to enjoy and experience. At Kia’s ‘Fan Zone,’ event attendees entertained themselves with activities from face-painting to penalty shootout games. Kia also provided the opportunity of a lifetime for young beach football fans. Eleven lucky children from all around the world were selected to be official match ball-carriers (OMBCs) and root for their heroes and favorite teams up close. After two weeks of hotly contested matches, the Brazil national team emerged as the champion. With hundreds of people returning home in great spirits with memorable anecdotes, it is no doubt that the championship event was a glaring success. For many pet owners, warm weather means more outings with your pets. However, taking off with your furry friends requires some planning and preparation in advance. Here are a few tips to make traveling with your pets safe, easy and enjoyable! Familiarize Your Car If your pet does not have much experience with motor vehicles, it is a good idea to familiarize them prior to the actual trip. Let your pet walk around and inside car with the engine off. Take your pet out for short trips and gradually increase the length of drives as they grow more comfortable. To make your pet feel more welcome and relaxed in the new environment, bring along his or her favorite toy, pillow or blanket for the ride. Keep Your Pet in the Back While you are driving, your pet should be kept in the back of your vehicle at all times. Utilize special pet leashes or transportation crates that can be properly buckled and secured to car seats. Both harnesses and carriers should act as an enclosure to keep animals safely in the back of the vehicle while allowing them sit, stand and lie down comfortably. Take Plenty of Breaks Stopping to rest every two hours is as good for you as it is for your animal companion. Providing your pet with regular water and bathroom breaks will go a long way in preventing any unwanted accidents inside your Kia. Taking some time to exercise your pet is also encouraged to release any pent up energy. You can give your pet small snacks during breaks but be wary of overfeeding as a full stomach can lead to car sickness. It is best to feed your pet a full meal three or four hours before departure or once you have stopped driving for the day. Be Prepared for Emergencies Always pack an extra bag for your pet. Items to consider bringing include: identification tags, pet first-aid kit and medication, towels or pre-moistened wipes, extra leash and collar, and an ample supply of food and treats. Bringing bottled water is also a good idea as tap water in some areas may cause an upset stomach. Have access to your pet’s health documents in case of unforeseen and unprepared problems with your pet’s health. Adding a microchip to your animal companion prior to your trip may prove extremely helpful in the unfortunate event that he or she goes missing while on the road. By being prepared and taking precautions, you and your pet are sure to have a fantastic time on the road. Just last month, the Southwest Kia Round Rock dealership of Texas, United States partnered with the local radio music station 96.7 KISS FM for an interesting contest that made headlines. Steering wheels are now smarter than ever before. As automobile manufacturers seek to make driving more comfortable and effortless, they are envisioning cars that require less effort on the driver’s part. Current day vehicles feature steering wheels that adjust automatically to suit drivers of varying physical statures, optimizing the level of comfort and control. Some steering wheels are even capable of incredible functions such as detecting altered mental states brought on by sleep deprivation or alcohol consumption to prevent dangerous situations on the road. However, as vehicles continue to grow more sophisticated and as brands move towards a future with minimal driver involvement, steering wheels may eventually become unnecessary relics. The advent of autonomous or self-driving cars has us swimming in an ocean of imagination and expectation. With rapid advancements in of autonomous technology, many aspects of the driving experience are heading for big changes. In the future, fully autonomous cars will be able to control and handle all aspects of driving through precise vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication and sensor monitoring. As a result, vehicles will no longer have to rely on human occupants, rendering all mechanisms for human control – steering wheels and even brakes and accelerators – completely obsolete. After all, why would such devices be needed if vehicles can take full control? At this point in time, the elimination of steering wheels is a hot topic of contention. The majority of current day drivers say that they are not fully comfortable with a steering wheel-less driving system and have lingering doubts about certain self-driving features. However, others reason that the steering wheel-less feature will be the only safe option for a self-driving car as it may be even more dangerous for a driver who hasn’t been paying attention to the road to suddenly or rather impulsively grab the steering wheel to override the autonomous system. This debate likely stems from inexperience with driverless cars and only time will tell which option will be the safer choice. Like many other automobile brands, Kia is preparing itself and its customers for the autonomous future. Kia launched its new autonomous sub-brand DRIVE WiSE just last year with ambitious plans to introduce partially autonomous cars by 2020 and fully driverless vehicles by 2030. In an attempt to familiarize our fans with this new driverless technology, Kia even offered a chance to test drive its newest autonomous vehicle – the Kia Cadenza (also known as K7 in the domestic market) – at the 2017 Seoul Motor Show. While the presence of steering wheels is somewhat of a dilemma when discussing the topic of autonomous driving, one thing is for certain – the future of autonomous driving is brighter and looming closer than ever before.
