As it turns out, Kia‘s inappropriately sexy ads that spread like wildfire through the blogosphere just a few weeks ago, weren’t Kia ads at all. Designed to help loosely deliver the message that the Korean automaker now has a dual-zone climate control system (showing two sides to the same story), the print ads drew plenty of attention and a firestorm of criticism for some rather creepy implications. Moma Propaganda, the agency behind the two ads, which took home two Lions awards from the prestigious Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity is now being stripped of its honors and banned from participating in next year’s competition. The agency failed to submit proof that it had been hired by Kia Motors Brazil for the ads; a rather obvious hint that it never had been. As a result, two Lions awards have been retracted This isn’t the first time awards have been revoked for fake ads, a tactic used to launch a relatively unknown agency into the spotlight. Taking more decisive action, however, this is the first time individuals have been banned from competing in the future. Kia Motors is one of the big winners at the first ever Automotive Brand Contest which was organized by the German Design Council. The judge panel declared Kia Motors the worthy winner in four categories. Three kia models were picked as winners for the exterior category, including the compact Sportage SUV, the forthcoming Rio (on sale from September 2011) and the all new Kia Optima (above). Kia was also ranked ‘Best of Best’ in the brand design category, where strategy and focus of the brand’s overall design is rated. Peter Schreyer, Kia’s chief designer said, “We are all exceedingly proud that Kia Motors has done so well in this new competition, which is very important within the automotive industry. Kia Motors is one of the main winners in the first-ever Automotive Brand Contest. In the automotive industry, the brand and the brand design are the two most important factors in winning consumers’ hearts. The Rat für Formgebung (http://bit.ly/1xJ8hH, German Design Council) has decided to recognize this fundamental importance of brand and brand design by organizing the first international brand and design award for the automobile industry. The contest, known as the “Automotive Brand Contest 2011,” honors outstanding achievements of carmakers in the categories of brand management, brand communication and design. The focus is on the integral and consistent use of the brand across all media and its actual products. The judging panel of the first Automotive Brand Contest declared Kia Motors the worthy winner in two categories. In the “Brand Design” category, where strategy and focus of the brand’s overall design is rated, Kia was recognized as the “Best of the Best.” For the “Exterior” category, in which the vehicle design itself is the main focus, three Kia models were picked as winners: the compact Sportage CUV, the upcoming Rio B-segment model and the all-new, athletic D-segment Kia Optima sedan. Didier de Radiguès and Philippe Stéveny came in first under the checkered flag at Spa-Francorchamps at race two. With this victory and the win at the first race on July 8, the Belgian duos’ Kia Pro_Ceed brings them the lead in the Belgian Touring Car Series at the 25H VW Fun Cup. The race was like an action-packed movie starring three teams: No. 2 Edouard Mondron and Stéphane Lémeret; No. 1 Delahaye Mégane, Frédéric Bouvy and Christian Kelders; and our heroes, Didier de Radiguès and Philippe Stéveny with the Kia Pro_Ceed. The Kia team seemed to be falling behind in the sixth round after losing five seconds at the chicane, but Philippe Stéveny managed to retake the lead, crossing the finish line 1.7 seconds ahead of the other teams. Kelley Blue Book announced today that Hyundai has taken the number 1 spot in brand loyalty, beating out Honda and Toyota, on kbb.com for Q2 2011. Automakers have struggled recently to retain loyal customers due to the economic downturn and consumers becoming more aware of issues such as fuel prices and safety recalls. Hyundai has remained successful through aggressive marketing campaigns combined with innovative product redesigns like the successful Sonata and Elantra. In the second quarter of 2011, Hyundai’s brand loyalty was at 52.3 percent while Honda followed with 49.7 percent and Toyota came in third at 47.7 percent. Kia and Mini are the only two brands that have gained loyalty year-over-year, thanks to attractive redesigns and additional models within their respective lineups coupled to aggressive marketing campaigns. “Hyundai’s product renaissance is benefitting the company not just by attracting an all-new customer base, but by helping them to retain current loyal Hyundai owners, as well,” said Arthur Henry, market intelligence manager for Kelley Blue Book. ”This latest brand loyalty analysis from kbb.com is a testament to the power of attractive vehicle designs and intriguing marketing in the minds of in-market car shoppers as they consider their next vehicle.” Lees het hele artikel

Yesterday, Hyundai Motor Group said it is expecting to raise its U.S auto sales by 18.2 percent this year to 1.06 million vehicles, an improvement from a previous target of 1.01 million. Hyundai would to sell 624,000 units and Kia with 433,000 in the U.S. Both South Korean automakers are experiencing fast growth in the U.S market with a combined share reaching 10.1 percent as of May from 7.7 percent in 2010 and 3.3 percent in 2001. The launch of the Hyundai Veloster and the Kia Rio subcompact in the U.S are to help maintain the sales momentum of both companies. Chung Mong-Koo, charman of the Hyundai Motor Group, announced the sales increase while visiting the U.S, which may be linked to the possible construction of a second plant to meet booming demand in the world’s second- largest auto market. How do you envision the perfect road trip vacation? Kia wants to help realize your dream. Kia is hosting an overseas road trip event, which also includes a test drive of Kia cars. The contest, called “Lucky Tour with Kia,” can be found on Kia Motors Facebook fan page on a tab under the same name. The challenge launched globally on June 20. Contest applicants were asked to submit a road trip plan with an itinerary of the entire trip. A selection committee will choose winners based on road trip ideas that convey both Kia’s brand values and the cultural values of the chosen travel destination. A total number of 5 participants will win an opportunity to go on an overseas road trip to one of five popular travel destinations in Italy, Australia, USA, South Korea or Malaysia. Although Kia has started reviewing candidates (the 5 winners will be announced on Wednesday 21 July), the “Road Trip Mission-idea Contest” is taking place until July 26. In this contest, Kia will choose the best “mission” ideas from fans around the world. How should you take care of your car in the case of a sudden downpour or heavy rain? Special care is necessary, as a car is more likely to break down during heavy rain and a car’s lifetime is highly dependent on car maintenance. Here are some tips for easy maintenance and the safe use of a car during heavy rain. 1. Checking the tire pressure, batteries and brakes is essential Driving in the rain is more dangerous than driving in the snow. While snow chains and salt can help prevent accidents on snowy roads, drivers are more helpless on rainy roads. Due to the possibility of hydroplaning on wet roads, it is important to check for the best levels of tire pressure and to take extra care in terms of safety. During the rainy season, it is recommended to elevate tire pressure within 10 percent of the usual level. It is dangerous to use worn tires. As visibility get worse while driving in heavy rains, turning on the headlights, even during the day, can help to prevent an accident. It is necessary to check the car battery in advance, as the frequent use of headlights, A/C and the windshield wipers use up much of the battery. On wet roads, a car that stops well is safer than a car that moves well. Thus, checking the brakes and tire condition is very important. 2. Secure a clear view by taking care of the windshield If the windshield wipers make a strange sound, it is likely that it is due to gas exhaust from other cars on the window than a faulty wiper blade. As a solution, it is effective to clean the window with a sponge and detergent two or three times. Additionally, the amount of washer water under the hood should be checked. The water’s direction can be easily adjusted with pins. 3. Use an anti-water protector When there is a lot of rain, water drops gather on the side mirrors and back window, which can distract from safe driving. It is a good idea to put a water-gathering protector on the mirrors and windows. Prior preparation is needed because heavy rains result in many problems with driver visibility. 4. Park in a safe zone A sudden downpour can flood an area in a very short amount of time. Check if there are any areas that have flooded recently and avoid parking near riversides, streams and under bridges. The Kia Mustang might be a reality later this year, when Kia shows off a pair of rear-wheel-drive coupe concepts in Frankfurt and Detroit. Taking the sports and muscle car fight to their respective home turfs, Kia will gauge public interest in buying a V8-powered sports car with a Korean nameplate – first at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, then a second concept at the Detroit Auto Show next January. Similar what Hyundai does with its Genesis and Genesis Coupe, Kia will branch these V8 coupes from the K9 sedan that’s been caught testing back in Korea.
