  1. All-new Rio is the perfect vehicle for those living life to the fullest with passion. Kia Buzz met up with the product manager of all-new Rio to find out more about this upcoming addition to the Kia line-up. Kia BUZZ: Hello. Thanks for making time for this interview. First, could you please give us a brief self-introduction? Park: I am Min-Woo Park of the Overseas Product Marketing Team, and I have been working for Kia since 2005. I also worked at the Slovakia production unit as a production technology engineer until 2006. And I have held my current position since August 2006. Kia BUZZ: We heard that you were the main product manager for the all-new Rio. Please tell us about what a product manager does. Park: As a product manager, my tasks involve developing the most ideal product to suit the customers’ needs and tastes. Basically, I try to turn what the customers want in a vehicle into reality. In addition, I am also responsible for the overall process of deciding the specifications and setting the prices for the vehicles. Kia BUZZ: We believe that a lot of creativity is needed for developing new products. Where do you find your inspiration for new ideas and motives? Park: I like to look for inspiration by checking out competitors’ websites and reading automotive magazines. Rather than just limiting my reading to auto industry related information, I try to read up a wide range of books and magazines, as well as occasionally go to exhibitions as well. Production & Design Story of the New European Flavored Rio Kia BUZZ: We are curious about how you came up with the initial idea of the Rio’s development. Since you are in charge of Kia’s B-segment lineup, could you tell us what elements you consider when developing a product? Park: In fact, Kia was not that strong in the B-segment European market. So Kia needed to strengthen its position to compete with strong rivals in the market. We have worked hard to incorporate the characteristics of the leading European offerings in the development of the Rio. Even in the B-segment, European consumers tend to be rather picky and prefer sophisticated and classy-looking vehicles. We tried to develop the Rio taking this into consideration. Kia BUZZ: What would you say was the part that required the most amount of effort in developing the new Rio? Park: Most of all, it was the design aspect. Although I didn’t design the Rio first hand, I did my best to infuse European elements into the Rio. Kia BUZZ: Which competing models did you take into consideration when developing the Rio? Park: I kept the VW Polo and Ford Fiesta in mind as our main rivals. Kia BUZZ: The new Rio was received well at the recent Geneva Motor Show. What do you think was the main difference from the old model that led to such an enthusiastic welcoming of the new Rio? Park: Most of all, the new Rio’s edgy design and its innovative CO2 emission level, which is the lowest in its segment, are the major differences. Kia BUZZ: In terms of design, the front styling with Kia’s signature grille really stands out. Was there a particular reason for the significant changes of the logo placement and the grille design? Park: The new Rio is the model that best demonstrates Kia’s family car concept, following the Sportage and the Optima. The front design went through a significant change in order to give it a typical European hatchback feel. Kia BUZZ: Rio’s side roof & character line seem to resemble that of the pro_cee’d (3-door version of the c’eed). Are these aspects related? Also, will the Rio be available in a 3-door version as well? Park: The two design aspects are not directly related. Perhaps in highlighting the strengths of a hatchback design, the design profile may have turned out to look similar. And, yes, there are plans to release a 3-door version of the Rio in Europe from November this year. New Rio’s Biggest Strengths: Fuel Efficiency and Eco-friendliness Kia BUZZ: In terms of performance, what would you say is the new Rio’s biggest strength? Park: For the first time in Kia’s compact car history, a 1.6GDI engine will be offered for the North American market. The new Rio is expected to have excellent fuel efficiency even better than the Honda Insight hybrid. Moreover, the U2-1.1 diesel engine boosts class leading CO2 emissions of 85g which will cause quite a stir around the world. Kia BUZZ: We have heard that 1.2 GDI turbo version will also be offered. When will it become available? Also, will it be correct to consider it as a kind of a sports edition, like the VW Polo GTI? Park: We have plans to release it during the second half of the year, and we are still looking into the possibility of developing a sports edition of the Rio. Product Developer: His Story Kia BUZZ: What are the three words best explain the new Rio? Park: Revolution, Innovation and Hot Kia BUZZ: What is a ‘good car’ for you? Park: It would be a car that the driver can rely and depend on. Kia BUZZ: What would be the vehicle you would personally like to own and why? Park: I personally recommend the all-new Sportage, which I currently own. It’s because of the Sportage’s design and the interior package. I also quite like the R diesel engine’s fuel efficiency. Kia BUZZ: You must be busy with the upcoming launch of the Rio. Do you have any holiday plans once the launch is done? Park: After the launch, I would like to take a break in Spain. Though I’m not sure whether that’ll be possible. Kia BUZZ: What would like to say to Kia Buzz? Park: I hope much more Kia fans visit Kia Buzz to communicate with us in terms of technology, our brand story and new cars. As you know, the more you tell us, the better we can develop Kia cars. Please visit us and let us know about your idea by leaving comments. Kia BUZZ: Thank you once again, for your valuable time today. 2. Yesterday, we told you about the rising influence women of different ethnicities have when it comes to vehicle purchases. And now, R.L. Polk & Co. has released new information about the correlation between women and the Asian automakers. The Asian OEMs in question are Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, Hyundai, KIA, Nissan, Infiniti, Subaru and Mazda, and these companies make up the top picks across all ethnic groups. On the high end, Vietnamese take the top 21 consecutive spots when it comes to Asian brand affinity, while African American women round out the low end of with just seven model selections. Ironically, however, Asian women aren’t buying Asian cars, they instead go for European Brands such as BMW, Mercedes or Volkswagen models. These European brands come in as the 13th choice for Chinese, Indian and Korean women, and as the 22nd selection for Vietnamese women. The only women who thought that domestic brands were the way to go were African American and Hispanic women. Making these group’s top 10 picks were the Chevrolet Malibu (#8 for African American women) and the Ford F-Series (#10 for Hispanic women). [source: Polk] Lees het hele artikel

  5. With the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid delayed due to a change to the pedestrian warning system, the Kia Optima Hybrid will face similar delays, with units expected to arrive at dealers sometime in the summer, a full 5 months later than planned. The Optima Hybrid, being mechanically identical to the Sonata Hybrid, must also undergo the removal of a switch to disable the pedestrian warning system, which emits a sound to alert bystanders that the vehicle is running while the silent electric motor is online. Hyundai also wants the Sonata Hybrid to debut first, and with supplies trickling to dealers at a very slow rate, the Optima Hybrid must wait on the sidelines until the Sonata has made its presence known. 7. Kia has just revealed its third in a string of electric car concepts, debuting the Naimo at the Seoul Motor Show. Unlike past mini cars, this sub-compact B-Class model is a crossover and may be the most realistic example yet of Kia’s plan to bring an EV to market in the near future. At 153-inches long, it’s approximately 4-inches larger than a Toyota Yaris and is powered by an electric motor and lithium-polymer battery pack that makes 109-hp and 207 lb-ft of torque with a total range of 124 miles. Perhaps most impressive is the claim that the Naimo’s battery pack can be recharged up to 80 percent in just 25 minutes using a special charger. Using a standard outlet it takes 5.5 hours. With this latest EV, look for Kia to soon announce a test fleet of cars as it prepares to bring one of its three EV models to market. GALLERY: Kia Naimo EV Crossover Concept Lees het hele artikel
  8. Making its world premiere at the Seoul Motor Show today, the Kia Naimo electric concept car combines Korean heritage with innovative modern features. Taking its name from the Korean word “Ne-mo”, (pronounced ‘Neh-mo’, meaning ‘square shape’), the Naimo electric crossover utility vehicle (CUV) was conceived by Kia’s international design team in Seoul, and is characterized principally by its simple lines and solid, muscular stance. The uncomplicated overall design is accentuated by a number of striking key details, such as the wraparound windscreen and asymmetric sunroof design, and the front and rear dot-style LED head- and positioning-lamps. This juxtaposition of simple and complex is a common trait of many traditional Korean arts and crafts. Asian Celadon-style pottery, in particular, was a major influence on the car’s styling – with the pottery’s asymmetric form lending itself to the sunroof design, and the typical jade coloring giving Naimo its unique exterior finish. Naimo’s interior was designed to evoke a strong sense of tranquility and features hand-crafted materials throughout. Korean oak is used to trim the interior door panels and the entire interior floor, Korean “Han-ji” paper is used for the head lining. Alongside these traditional elements sit modern features such as a TOLED (transparent organic light emitting diode) storming display instrument panel and full device connectivity. Power comes from a PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) electric motor with a maximum output of 80 kW (109 ps) and maximum torque of 280 Nm, enabling Naimo to reach a top speed of 150 kph (93 mph). A twin-pack 27 kWh battery is located under the trunk floor and uses innovative LiPoly (Lithium Ion Polymer) technology that offers numerous advantages over other battery types. Equipped with this battery, Naimo provides a driving range of 200 km (124 miles) on a single charge. To enhance range, the showcar is fitted with special low-drag 20-inch diameter alloy wheels. Under the quick recharging cycle (50 kW) the Naimo’s battery can be recharged to 80 percent of its capacity within 25 minutes. 17. Rumored to be in the production pipeline since 2009, Kia will reportedly move ahead with plans to introduce a flagship K9 sedan. The K9 (following Kia’s Korean numbering scheme) will be based on the same chassis as the Genesis sedan from parent company Hyundai. That being said, it will be a true rear-wheel drive machine, likely sporting the brand’s Tau V8 (4.6-liters or 5.0-liters), mated to a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Set to launch next year, this report fits with a larger plan announced by Kia to expand into niche markets with more engaging vehicles. According to CAR Magazine, the K9 won’t make its way to European soil, but is planned for North America. [source: CAR] Lees het hele artikel
  18. Kia is currently investigating a plan to bring a small two-seat roadster model to market to help set the tone for the brand. The car has even been called Kia’s MX-5 by company execs, including European CEO Paul Philpott. According to Philpott 2011 and 2012 are all about setting a new foundation for the brand with solid volume models. Beyond that, he says the plan for 2013 and 2014 is to bring to market, “halo models that stretch the company forward.” The aim is to solidify what the brand stands for, while setting it apart from parent-company Hyundai. Philpott intends to solidify the brand with a focus on youth. Back in 2003 Kia showed-off the KCV III Concept (above), a wild-looking 4-seat roadster, a sign that the company has been looking at such a project for a very long time. Look for an all-new design for this new model, wearing Kia’s current corporate grille. Additionally, Kia is reportedly planning a big change for the Soul, moving the car into a new space and giving it AWD. Such a change would likely position it against Nissan’s new Juke. 21. The all-new Picanto has been born with higher performance and a new design characteristic. The new Picanto is a result of the efforts made to keep up with recent trends in the automotive industry, especially in terms of environmental friendliness, economy and performance. Let’s take a look at the Kappa 1.0 MPI 3-cylinder engine. The new Picanto comes with the new Kappa 1.0 3-cylinder MPI engine, which was newly developed for the next generation of small cars. It has class leading efficiency and performance among 1.0L engines. The new Kappa 1.0 3-cylinder MPI engine features a maximum output of 69ps (European standard), a maximum torque of 9.7kgf•m (European standard), fuel efficiency 4.2L/100km (base), 4.1L/100km (Eco-Dynamic), and a CO2 emission rate of 99g/km (base), 95g/km (Eco-Dynamic). Compared to the pevious Picanto (Epsilon 1.0 MPI European Standards), its maximum output rose by 11 percent, maximum torque by 9 percent and fuel efficiency by 15 percent. Its CO2 emissions dropped up to 17 percent. The new Picanto also includes new technologies, such as the ISG system (Idle Stop and Go System) and Dual CVVT, which has been applied to a small car for the first time in the world. With these new technologies, it not only has outstanding performance and fuel efficiency, but it also is very competitive in regards to green technology, as it is in line with reinforced exhaust gas regulations. (※ Epsilon 1.0 MPI European standards – 62ps/8.9kg.m, 4.8L/100km, 114g/km) The new Kappa 1.0 3-cylinder MPI engine, which also features various cutting-edge technologies, optimizes the intake/exhaust port to reduce pneumatic resistance, and maximizes induction efficiency. It also improves both performance and fuel efficiency by using the variable intake/exhaust valve timing mechanism, which adjusts the timing of the intake/exhaust valve according to the engine revolution and load, and the variable induction system (VIS), which adjusts the induction path according to the engine rev count to increase the output. Additionally, the new Picanto’s ‘ISG system,’ improves economical fuel efficiency. The system automatically stops the engine at an intersection or when the car needs to stop and immediately starts the engine when the driver wants to drive the car again.
