If you own a 2006-2008 Kia Optima sedan, there’s a good chance that it might need to be recalled. The automatic transmission features a cable for the shifter mechanism and according to the automaker, said cable could detach, causing the car to remain in gear even if the driver moves the shifter into park. Obviously that’s a bit of problem and could cause a bit of damage to both the Optima and nearby surroundings, especially if the parking brake isn’t engaged, which it seldom is in most cases. However, Kia also says that so far, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not recorded any instances of injuries resulting from the problem. Hello. My name is Nick Reid, the Senior Product Manger for Kia Australia. Mr. D. K. Lim of Kia’s Overseas Product Team wrote a great post back in August last year introducing Kia Australia’s ambitious project of tuning cars for local conditions and tastes. In short, D.K helped explain Australia’s automotive environment and the differences between global driving conditions and drivers tastes. He also explained the objectives of the Australian localisation programme and our desire to tune Kia models that deliver confidence and comfort on our fast and rough road conditions. Confidence is the ability to drive the car through a corner, with it behaving in a secure and predictable manner. Comfort is more than just ride quality; it is the ability to arrive from a long journey feeling refreshed. Since the program launched in early 2010 Kia Australia has worked tirelessly to maximise this opportunity and deliver on the programs objectives. The first model to receive the Australian dynamic flavour was the all-new Sportage. In conjunction with Test Team 3 of Kia’s R&D center in Korea the Sportage underwent a comprehensive testing and development program aimed at developing a package which is more dynamic, refined and better suited to Australian conditions. Special mention and thanks goes to Test Team 3 who worked tirelessly on adapting the Sportage tune to Australia’s needs. After the car quietly popped on the scene at the Montreal Auto Show a few months back, Kia has confirmed the SX Turbo version of its Sportage crossover for America. Powered by the same 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection 4-cylinder as found in the Optima sedan, it makes 256-hp and 264 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is rated at 27-mpg with the FWD drivetrain. Also included in this top-trim package are 18-inch wheels, a stiffer suspension setup, a dual exhaust system and new front grille. Inside, the SX Turbo model gets aluminum door sills and a custom gauge cluster. Optional items include special Orange and Blue interior packages with colors door and seat inserts with matching stitching on the steering wheel and console. I was at the Geneva Motor Show 2011 and would like to share everything about the show with all of you who could not attend this year. The Geneva Motor Show is the only top-5 motor show of the world that is held in a country where no cars are produced. If a motor show is hosted in a car-producing country, the focus of the motor show tends to be placed on that country’s brands. In contrast, there is no such bias at the Geneva Motor Show, so it will enable customers to evaluate the development trends of global car makers in a more objective manner. The Geneva Motor Show is held at the PALEXPO convention center near Geneva International Airport which is also a transport hub where the railroad and expressway meet. The official name of the Geneva Motor Show is the Geneva International Motor Show (Salon International de I’Auto), and it has been held every year since 1931. The motor show is open only to the press is on March 1 and 2 while the public will be able to take part from March 3 to March 13. I attended the motor show during the press days. A total of 260 companies, including 53 car makers and many parts makers, participated in this year’s show. Kia held the world premieres of our all-new Picanto and all-new Rio, and displayed 13 models in total. Why don’t we move to the exhibition hall. Let’s move over to Kia stand where the all-new Rio and all-new Picanto made their debut. How were the cars displayed? Allow me to briefly describe the cars on the stand. For starters, I’ll show you Picanto and Rio. I tried my best to photograph them when there are no people around, but as people kept flooding in, I had a difficulty to take pictures of the cars alone. According to some journalists in attendance, the unstable oil prices due to the recent pro-democracy demonstrations in the Middle East and North Africa have brought the economical A and B segments to the fore, and the all-new Picanto and all-new Rio are well suited for penetrating the European market at this point in time. The following are the Rio 1.1 liter diesel and a special edition of Soul. According to the all-new Rio brochure, the diesel model is “One of the cleanest cars on the markets, as it emits a mere 85g/km of CO2.” “85g” is wrapped onto the actual car for emphasis. The next picture is of the special edition of Soul that has been neatly transformed using noticeable wrapping, while the wheels and white-tone interior stood out. This model is exclusively for Switzerland and comes with essential options like Rear-Parking Assistance, Fog Lamps, Bluetooth, 8-Speakers, Dual Air-Conditioner Control System, Cruise Control, etc. Next are Kia’s representative CUV siblings: Sportage and Sorento. I was very glad that Sportage received top points in a new test from Consumer Reports a few weeks ago. And today’s newspaper reported that Sorento was picked by Consumer Reports as the best family SUV. As they also received an enthusiastic response at the motor show, I had to wait a long but pleasant time to take photographs without any people around. I’d also like to show you the facelift version of cee’d, loved by many Europeans, and the hybrid version of Optima. The hybrid version of Optima attracted the most attention after the two world premiere cars. Its fuel efficiency is 36/40 mpg. Its 0->100km/hr acceleration is 9.2 seconds, and its maximum speed is 198km/h. It receives power from the motor for start and low-speed operations. High-brightness metallic materials are used for the radiator grill and fog lamp, and it comes with the next-generation infotainment system UVO. As this motor show emphasized environment-friendliness, I am sure the hybrid version of Optima shines even brighter. In addition to these models, various souvenirs, radiator grills and wheels representing the brand identity of Kia Motors were on display, pleasing the eyes of visitors. Lastly, the highlight of the motor show was the press conference. I am going to give you the details in my second post along with visuals. I’ll just attach a few pictures here so that you can get the feel of it, and I will also offer you a couple of teasers. Kia Motors’ official activities for the 2011 Geneva Motor Show kicked off this past Monday night on eve of our main press conference during an unveiling party for the all-new Rio and Picanto held at the Hotel Inter Continental Geneva. Despite coinciding events held by other major automakers, a strong turnout of 252 guests enjoyed the unveiling of Kia’s two newest all-new models along and learned in advance of the official press conference the next day of an additional piece of exciting news – that the all-new Rio equipped with the 1.1-liter diesel engine and ISG will be the most fuel efficient and cleanest CO2 emitting vehicle in all of Europe, irrespective of segment (excluding electric cars and hybrids). A new concept in ‘Smart Premium’ The main concept of the exterior of the All-new Picanto is Distinct & Modern. In other words, highly individual styling and differentiated elements based on clearly distinct modernity give a new identity to this compact car. Also, the harmony between the European-style sophisticated image and unique detailed elements express a new “Smart Premium” design for the compact car. Its front view emphasizes confidence and dignity in general. The unique graphical elements succeed to the design identify of Kia and were materialized with a progressive image. In particular, its front bumper was faced with a tremendous difficulty, called the Euro NCAP Pedestrian Protocol, in the model design phase, which was a big concern. “A better design with greater safety always put the designer in a dilemma. More emphasis on safety will make the shape of the bumper different from the original concept, while disregard for safety will result in less safety. It was pretty tough to meet both conditions. However, this dilemma led me to discover a solution, i.e. a new style for a premium compact car,” said Mr. Kee Hong Park in charge of exterior design. He mentions that it is the harmony between design and technology that creates this highly safe and dignified style for a compact car. As far as the specific design characteristics are concerned, the molding around the fog lamp gives an expression of the bumper image and dynamic image, which emphasizes sturdiness and safety. In addition, the headlamp LED DRL (Daytime Running Light) brings a high-tech style and stability with abundant volume. In particular, the headlamp of the All-new Pianto is based on the image of the helmet used in American football. With its details emphasized, the headlamp was transformed into the new eye of new Picanto looking like the brightening eye line image Mr. Park said “Being the first to apply the projection type and DRL to the headlamp of a compact car was a new challenge to me as a designer. Ordinarily, the headlamp, often regarded as the eye of the car, was designed to look sharp and pointed, but in view of the fact that it is a compact car, I also took the cute and friendly image into consideration and applied diverse ideas.” Dignified and sturdy image emphasizing the abundant volume The side of new Picanto stressed simple sportiness with a speedy structure, and also placed emphasis on simple lines and the abundant fender volume to the fullest to render a stable image. Particularly, the wheel design applied the machine finish and high gloss to deliver a highly sensitive image, and the designer suggested a slim LED side repeater to go along with the overall shape of the car, and a high-class grip-type door handle to prevent women from hurting their nails. When it comes to the rear view, the designer gave priority to abundant volume as well as unique formativeness, and tried to pursue wide proportional stability with an edgy style. The advanced and unique image goes well with the front image, and when the lamp is turned on, the image of Kia will come to mind. Inspired by architecture and fashion, focus was on the delivery of an overall sporty and wide image. “Unlike previous experience, developing the All-new Picanto was a full of surprises. In particular, when I was dwelling on the front bumper, engineers visited me in the model room to share their thoughts with me. Our designers thought that they had to give this entry-level model of Kia a cheerful and lively image, favored by foreigners. After numerous evaluation sessions and countless modifications of the model with the design constraints and costs taken into account, the All-new Picanto was finally completed. As a designer of the model, I hope that the All-new Picanto will someday become a leading model in the global compact car market.” said Mr. Park. The Kia Rio used to have the ignominious honor of being a “penalty box”, a car you didn’t want to spend time in unless absolutely necessary. But with the upswing in quality from Kia, and shared underpinnings from the promising new Hyundai Accent, the all-new Rio, shown for the first time at the Geneva Auto Show, might just be a solid little car for entry level buyers. On sale in the U.S. this fall, the Rio features Kia’s new corporate styling cues, but still maintains a very close resemblance to the Ford Fiesta – not a bad thing in this segment. While only European specifications were announced, the North American version will probably use the 1.6L 138-horsepower 4-cylinder engine that the Accent uses, which will also deliver about 30-mpg in town and 41 mpg on the highway.
