  5. [See image gallery at www.autoguide.com] Kia is readying its Ford Fiesta ST fighter. The Kia Rio GT is expected to launch around 2018, riding on a new platform that saves weight and offers improved driving dynamics. Spy photographers have caught a prototype testing, and although it’s sporting a lot of camouflage, we can see that Kia isn’t shying away from aggressive styling for its sporty model. The front end also features LED daytime driving lights, another indication that this will be an upmarket variant. In the back, it also appears Kia will be using LED tail lights. The new standard Kia Rio is set to debut late this year or early 2017 and it will feature a new body along with some new powertrain options that will join the lineup alongside the existing 1.6-liter engine. SEE ALSO: Kia Reportedly Planning Fiesta ST Fighter The mind behind the Kia Rio GT is reportedly Albert Biermann, a former head of BMW’s M division. Expect power output to be around 180 horsepower for the GT model, coming from a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine. 6. Not too long ago, we shared the news about Soul EV’s participation in the ECO Drive racing event in Bulgaria. Today, we turn our attention to two journalists in Hungary who reached another milestone with our charming and reliable Kia Soul EV! In 2015, two Hungarian automotive journalists, Zoltán Sipos and Dávid Máth, of the country’s most popular Internet car magazine totalcar.hu embarked on an exciting road trip that came about on a whim. What started as a joke between two friends soon became a full-blown challenge – the e-tap road trip – when the men partnered up with Kia Motors Hungary to drive the Soul EV from Budapest, Hungary to the Nuremberg Toy Fair held in Germany. To shake things up even more, this trans-Europe journey was made in the dead of winter, battling snow storms and frigid conditions, with temperatures dropping below -15 degrees Celsius. Taking off! Zoltán loading up the Soul EV The two men started off a bit hesitant, with qualms about unexpected car problems, frozen roads, and a lack of long road trip experience in an electric vehicle. However, by January the journalists were ready to undertake a “real 21st century experience,” with packed bags and a geared-out Kia Soul EV. For a well-documented experience, the Soul EV was fully equipped with GPS data tracking and a digital map that shared the real time location of the travelers in a live online broadcast. " data-width="550" data-show-text="false"> Setting off on the cold Sunday morning of January 24, the duo initially ran into a slight road bump at charging stations that put them slightly behind the projected schedule. However, thanks to strategic planning and a few tech tweaks to the Soul EV, the team made the 750 km journey to Nuremberg safe and sound in approximately 40 hours. The overall journey was a cold but smooth one. The electric powertrain of the vehicle provided a steady and noiseless drive and quick acceleration. As the Soul EV required extra electricity consumption (for heat) to combat the cold weather, the car provided a driving range of 120 km (as opposed to 200 km in normal conditions). Traveling at 80-90 km/h, the model reached a consumption level of 16 kWh/100 km and reached a peak of 23.1 kWh/100 km when travelling faster. Car status was displayed on the EV’s touchscreen display The tech features of the Soul EV made the overall trip more pleasant. The Soul EV’s touchscreen display showed exactly how many kilowatts were being consumed by the car’s systems to better conserve energy during the ride. These details were also broadcasted across various online channels for fans to follow in real time and find out more about the vehicle’s actual position, travelling speed, distance travelled and interim stops. The travelling pair also provided social media postings on Instagram and Facebook as well as blog posts on totalcar.hu numerous times a day. Arriving at the final destination! After the eventful and adventurous drive, Zoltán and Dávid made it to Nuremberg later than planned but in time for the event. Returning home! The return trip to Budapest was a lot easier, driving on familiar roads and well prepared for issues along the way. All it took for the drive home was three charges in Germany, four charges in Austria and a short quick charge in between. Thanks to the real time broadcast and social postings, the project also gained quite an online following and the journalists also ran into drivers on the road that honked in recognition and encouragement. Many others took pictures of the charming box car as it completed the cross-border trip. With this adventure, Dávid, Zoltán and the Soul EV were able to make an impressive mark in EV history that will certainly remain as a useful reference for many years to come. Although long-distance trips in electric vehicles are not yet a common occurrence, perhaps this collaboration may serve as motivation for you to start your own. With the Soul EV, the road is your oyster! ▶ Check out the blog posts by Dávid and Zoltán! Lees hele artikel
  7. Korean automaker Kia is considering putting aside its planned diesel-engine mild hybrid program as emissions regulations become tighter and Volkswagen’s Dieselgate has heightened scrutiny of diesel engines. Albert Biermann, Kia’s performance development chief, told British publication Autocar it’s becoming more difficult to support the development of the more costly diesel engine as emissions regulations become increasingly tougher. “The research project is still going on,” Biermann told Autocar, “but the cost of electric motors and batteries in a hybrid is already significant. The question is whether it is really necessary to throw in a more expensive diesel engine.” The project was introduced with the Optima T-Hybrid concept shown at the 2014 Paris motor show. The mild hybrid system combined Optima’s 134 horsepower 1.7-liter four-cylinder CRDi turbodiesel engine with a five horsepower electric motor, a 48-volt lead-carbon battery and an electric supercharger. SEE ALSO: All-New 2017 Kia Niro Hybrid Crossover Has 50 MPG Goals A belt-driven starter generator, which replaces the conventional alternator, can start the car with zero emissions. At the time, Kia said the electric supercharger, which works alongside the existing turbocharger, pushed horsepower to 168 and boosted torque from 239 pounds-feet to 280. A lead-carbon battery was chosen over the more conventional lithium-ion units because they require little cooling and can be easily recycled. Kia estimated that a production version would be able to cut the emissions and fuel consumption of any car it was fitted to by 15-20 percent. The diesel engine may not be used as part of the mild hybrid system, but the research and development won’t be wasted. Biermann suggested the hybrid system could be re-engineered to work with a gasoline engine. “We also have a very efficient Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine, so I think that is the good choice here,” he said. 13. Avant-garde in design and form, concept cars often steal the spotlight at major motor shows. Since the early 2000s, Kia has captured the world’s attention by introducing mind-blowingly innovative conceptual designs. Take a look at some of Kia’s unique concept cars through the years and explore how Kia’s design language has developed over the last decade. Early concept cars (2003-2005) Kia’s early concept vehicles were characterized by rounded lines to provide a sporty and sturdy appearance. Simple but dynamic, the first concept cars focused heavily on driving practicality and modern styling. Slice (KCD-1), Kia’s very first concept vehicle, was a crossover SUV that prioritized comfortable and practical driving. The car was first revealed at the 2003 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). The Mojave (KCV-4), unveiled in 2004, features bold strong styling with suicide doors. The concept gets its name from the Californian desert where the Hyundai-Kia California Proving Ground facility is located, and later influenced the design of the Kia Borrego full-size SUV. New design directions (2006 – 2007) With an even stronger focus on design under the direction of Peter Schreyer, Kia’s concept cars started to display dramatic styling DNA changes. The cee’d (KED-1) and pro_cee’d (KED-2) concepts were predecessors to the current day production cee’d family line-up in Europe. Both concepts were revealed in 2006. A conceptual version of today’s ever popular Kia Soul, the Soul (KND-3) concept car made its world premiere at the 2006 NAIAS. Its iconic design combined with excellent functionality is embodied in the current day box-shaped market-leading model. The Kia Kee (KED-4) concept is an elegant 2-door coupe that was first displayed at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. As the first model to showcase Kia’s signature tiger-nose grille, the unveiling of this stunning concept signaled that a major design transformation was underway at Kia. Kue (KCD-3) is a sedan inspired crossover utility vehicle that shows off a futuristic look thanks to its clean body style and distinct character lines. The concept features elegant butterfly doors and became the first Kia concept to receive a design accolade, taking home the ‘Eyes on Design Award’ at the 2007 NAIAS. Exciting dynamic performance (2008-2009) Koup (KCD-4) is simple yet bold with an aggressive exterior complemented by a sleek interior design.. The elegant shape of the concept illustrates the future shape and evolution of Kia. Soul’ster (KCD-5) is a Soul-based 4-seat MPV with an open concept. Its vibrant and sporty design was introduced at the 2009 NAIAS and was named ‘Concept Truck of the Year’ by the Automotive Hall of Fame. Eco-friendly and futuristic (2010-2011) The aircraft-inspired Ray (KCD-6) is a hybrid concept that combines futuristic style with efficient green technology. Its lightweight, recycled materials give the model a distinct look, and it’s the first Kia to include solar panels. All-electric with no emissions, Kia Pop (KED-7) represents Kia’s vision of future green transportation with stand-out features such as unconventional side-windows and a unique dot-patterned grille. GT (KED-is the first rear-wheel-drive concept in Kia’s history. The concept is drawn from the idea of a grand touring car that serves as a luxury sport sedan and high performance vehicle for long range road trips. As a modern activity van, the Kia KV7 (KCD-7) concept combines the features of a minivan and an SUV. Revealed at the 2011 NAIAS, it received an IDEA design award for design excellency the same year. New innovations (2012-2015) Dubbed the ultimate performance edition of the Soul, Track’ster (KCD-is a 3-door hatchback designed for toughness, dynamics and powerful performance. With a bold and eye-catching paint scheme, the concept received an enthusiastic welcome from car enthusiasts. Introduced at the 83rd Geneva Motor Show in 2013, the sleek, low, and muscular coupe-style hatchback Provo (KED-9) brings a smart-hybrid solution to Kia’s fun-focused concept. With a simple and strong exterior body and stunning interior treatment, the Provo is a delight all around. Playful but sturdy, Niro (KED-10) with its muscular form, premium amenities and powerful engine with hybrid electric drive fulfilled a new urban lifestyle concept. The concept also featured with butterfly doors, an option usually adopted by supercars. GT4 Stinger (KCD-10) is an authentic rear-drive sport coupe that matches superb driving experience with a futuristic design language. It is no surprise that the GT4 Stinger won Kia another IDEA Design Award in 2014. A mean, green fastback saloon, Novo (KND-9) was revealed at Seoul Motor Show in 2015. Aimed for modern city dwellers with frantic schedules, the minimalistic concept provided a glimpse into Kia’s future plan for compact cars. An off-road model for the Soul, Trail’ster is Kia’s most rugged concept car yet. It’s nature-inspired design and strong driving power makes it the perfect vehicle for the road less traveled. The e-AWD system delivers optimized driving performance that responsively adapts to road surface conditions for a more stable ride on snowy and rough roads. Telluride (KCD-12) is the most recent model in Kia’s concept line-up. Featuring never-before-seen health and wellness technology complete with a stunning, vibrant color scheme, the concept was revealed in Detroit at the 2016 NAIAS. Explore Kia’s amazing round-up of concept cars and stay tuned for more concepts in the future. There is more to come! Lees hele artikel
  14. The Canadian new vehicle market is not merely a mini-representation of the U.S. auto industry. Full-size pickup trucks own a significantly larger percentage of the Canadian market, for example, and Canadians are nearly three times more likely to buy a Toyota Corolla than a Toyota Camry. The Canadian market can, however, be a useful test bed. Some new vehicles pass the test, such as the BMW X1, which enjoyed 16 fruitful months in Canada before grabbing a slice of the American pie. Others, such as the Chevrolet Orlando, wilt under the pressure of the Ontario-built Dodge Grand Caravan, endure a brief four-year run, and never even get a chance to make it in America. Other cars aren’t being market-tested and are simply the response of different automakers to different markets. These are the eight current vehicles that are sold in Canada but not in the United States. ALSO SEE: 7 Cars Americans Can Buy That Canadians Can’t Kia Rondo Kia sold the previous-generation Rondo in the United States. 73,100 Rondos ended up in American driveways between 2006 and 2011. But following the Rondo’s 28,645-sales peak in 2008, sales plunged by half in recession-plagued 2009. When Kia Canada introduced a new Rondo — sales of which are consistently falling — for the 2014 model year, Kia USA didn’t join in. It’s a much-improved vehicle, but Canadian sales today are down 76 percent compared with 2008. Mazda5 Although Canadian sales of the Mazda5 in 2016 are half as strong as they were a year ago, and though sales of the Mazda5 in 2015 were down 79 percent compared with 2008, Mazda Canada willcontinue to market the Mazda5 in 2017. Mercedes-Benz B-Class Check that: the Mercedes-Benz B-Class is sold in the United States, but only as a niche market EV. In Canada, where Mercedes-Benz has been selling the B-Class since 2005, the second-generation B-Class is marketed as B250 and B250 4Matic with the CLA250’s 208-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. About 7 percent of the non-van Benzes sold in Canada are B250s. Mercedes-Benz C-Class Wagon Mercedes-Benz Canada announced the C-Class Wagon’s upcoming Canadian immigration last January. The C-Class, last sold in the U.S. in wagon form in 2005, returns to Canada two generations later as the C300d 4Matic. D is for diesel. Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Forgot all about it? Canadians have, as well. The Lancer Sportback had a limited U.S. run alongside the current Lancer, but the 2014 model year was its last. North of the border, the Lancer Sportback continues through 2017. Some people might notice. Most will not. Nissan Micra With an advertised base price below $10,000 (without air conditioning and power equipment), the Nissan Micra is a Canadian success that sent the Versa sedan packing. Nearly 26,000 Micras have been sold in the 28 months since its April 2014 launch. In 2015, the Nissan Micra was Canada’s 16th-best-selling car. Toyota Venza Asked in May what the future held for the Toyota Venza, Toyota Canada’s spokesperson wouldn’t go into detail, suffice to say that, “Venza continues to be produced for Canadians.” TTAC delved into the Venza’s U.S. cancellation in April 2015, citing the car’s awkward positioning in Toyota’s lineup for its demise. In Canada, the Venza has always told a different story. In fact, though sales now are down by half compared with 2011, the Venza was strong enough to outsell the Toyota Camry in 2010 and 2011. Toyota Yaris Sedan * As we discussed in the U.S. edition of this very article, the very same car is sold north and south of the border. But for a few more weeks, it falls under different banners. The Toyota Yaris Sedan is a Scion iA — soon to be Toyota Yaris iA — in the United States. In both cases, it’s really just a Mazda 2, which isn’t sold in either country. 18. Since humble beginnings, Kia Motors has surprised the world by growing steadfastly into the leading global automobile brand it is today. Perhaps one of the most significant turning points in the brand’s history was when Mr. Peter Schreyer, Kia’s Chief Design Officer (CDO) and President, joined the business in 2006 to lead to lead a full out design revolution. Celebrating our 10 years together, learn about what Peter Schreyer has to share about Kia’s design direction! Step towards global identity In the early year as Kia’s CDO, Peter Schreyer dedicated all his attention to establishing a distinct and unified brand identity and images. “When I started at Kia, it was important that we established an identity and a consistent feeling across the brand. But the story of how our new vehicles came to life is about so much more than just aesthetics. It involves intricate choices in how complex ideas work together to create something that generates an emotional response.” The efforts eventually led to the creation of the iconic Kia face that can be seen on the roads today. This new distinctive identity became a recognizable signature on Kia vehicles and a step towards Kia’s emergence as a well recognized an international brand. From Korea to the world Peter Schreyer has also mentioned his principal design philosophy ‘the simplicity of the straight line,’ was born from Korean influences. Taking inspiration from different elements of Korean culture such as architecture, art and music, Kia’s model range has undergone a dramatic transformation. “For us designers, it’s important to not only look at cars, but to be interested in architecture, art, music, industrial design…all sorts of things. They are influencing us and we are influencing them.” Sleek sophisticated lines have been utilized in every one of the designs that Peter Schreyer has overseen, and our designed teams stationed within a global network of design centers, have taken varying approaches to translate the essence of Korea on to automobile creations. “People know more about Korea, and about what’s going on there. On the one hand you have this ‘heartbeat’ when you go to Seoul, and on the other hand you have the silence, the concentration. Both of these things inspire me and our designers” With each and every model, our CDO has explored all creative boundaries to expand design capabilities. The range of Kia’s concept cars have foretold the future directions of our models while production models have showcased different aspects of Kia’s designs to demonstrate the brand’s dedication towards innovation and all-encompassing versatility. “You know when you have more than one kid, you can never say which your favorite is. You love them all. I also do, with all the cars I’ve designed, but there is one that stands out a little bit, I must admit.” Peter Schreyer shared that the Kia GT concept was his favorite design of all. Some other favorites have included the ground-breaking box-shaped Kia Soul and the recently release Europe-exclusive Optima Sportswagon. “It [GT concept] was a dream project for me and our designers because we got the chance to make a real GT, a car where you can travel in style.” Going forward “What really excites me is how fast this company is evolving. The brand as you knew it 10 or even five years ago is gone. You can see it in even the smallest detail. You can feel it in the sophisticated textures and materials. And you experience it in ways that are inter-related and connected.” True to his words, Peter Schreyer has boosted the brilliant ascent of the Kia brand in the recent years and he is far from finished. With new launches and ongoing enhancements of the existing line-up, we are looking forward to more brilliance and innovation from our chief designer. Thank you and here’s to another 10 years! The annual study is now in its 30th year and examines the number of problems experienced by vehicle owners during the first 90 days. An initial quality score is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score representing higher quality. SEE ALSO: The Best Automaker in Initial Quality is a Big Surprise This year’s study also marked the first time that a non-premium brand ranked at the highest, with Kia scoring 83 PP100, besting Porsche that finished second with 84 PP100. If quality if your primary concern when shopping for a new car, here are the top models per segment. City Car – Chevrolet Spark The Chevrolet Spark is the sole model to be ranked in the City Car segment, since no other model performed above segment average. Small Car – Hyundai Accent In the Small Car category, the Hyundai Accent claims top honors with the Chevrolet Sonic and Kia Rio finishing in the top three as well. Small Premium Car – Lexus CT The Lexus CT, a luxury version of the Toyota Prius, beat out the BMW 2 Series and Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class for top honors in the Small Premium Car segment. 22. When the first funky boxy vehicles were introduced several years ago, many may have thought that the ‘box on wheels’ concept was quite unconventional, strange even. While boxy cars may not be the fastest or the most luxurious of automobiles out there, more and more people have started to recognize the unique combination of style and practicality that these cars have to offer. Boxy cars not only allow for an efficient use of space but also come with a distinct style that makes them stand out among other ‘curvy’ models. Today let’s take a look at Kia’s box-shaped cars that are winning the hearts of city drivers everywhere. Ray, The Compact Family Car First introduced in 2011, the Kia Ray is a multi-purpose compact CUV designed for urban driving. Ray’s strikingly boxy design and vivid colors make it the perfect choice for any city driver seeking a delightful multi-functional vehicle for the road. The Ray, complete with Kia’s signature tiger-nose grille with unique headlamps, is characterized by a happy and inviting face. The angular boxy body and wide stance of the model are eye-catchingly attractive and further ensure stability and confidence. Perhaps the most noticeably stylistic feature on the Ray is its sliding rear door. This function not only adds style but also allows for easier passenger entry and exit in narrow spaces. The Ray may be a compact car but don’t be misled by its compact exterior! The biggest advantage of this model is its roomy interior maximized by the boxy shape and tall height. The sliding door also allows for an unobstructed opening that contributes to increased cargo utility. Although the Ray is a compact car designed for busy and narrow city spaces, it can also be utilized as a recreational family vehicle thanks to its spaciousness and efficient storage utilization. The modern silhouette as well as the roomy and versatile nature of the Ray make it a striking and appealing choice for consumers. Currently only available in Korea, the Ray comes in both gasoline and full-electric versions and has garnered countless admirers around the world. Soul, The Boxy Urban Crossover Vehicle Kia Soul, first produced in 2008, is one of Kia’s strongest sellers and the first box car model to be produced in Korea. Compared to the Ray, the Soul incorporates sloping edges that give the model a more streamlined and rounded appearance. Now in its second generation, the Soul – lower in height and longer in length than the Ray – boasts more masculine lines that contribute to its strong and dynamic image. Everything about this 5-door hatchback screams hip and funky. First capturing the world with the widely popular Kia hamsters commercials, the Soul features a wide range of interesting exterior and interior design elements that have established a ‘fashionable car’ image that has helped Soul make its way to the top of the wish list for young drivers. The Soul offers ample headroom and legroom in all seats while the sloping roofline, complete with a panoramic sunroof, also adds to the spaciousness. So reliable is the Kia Soul, in fact, that Pope Francis of the Vatican chose the model to be the official transport vehicle during his historic visit to Korea in 2014. The fun-to-drive nature and top-of-the-line features of the box-shaped Kia Soul has made it an explosively popular model in many regions of the globe.
