According to local legend, it was a lost postman who first stumbled across the giant Buddha. Caught in a heavy thunderstorm while crossing these hills in 1909, he sought shelter in the nearest cave. After pulling back fistfuls of moss and vines, one can only imagine his shock as he lit a match and saw an enormous stone face staring back at him. Forgotten for hundreds of years, the Seokguram Grotto and its colossal granite inhabitant – dating back to 751AD – have finally been restored to their former glory. Today, the grotto’s Buddha once again looks out across the valleys below to the Eastern Sea, protecting the country from unseen foes. It was a different country back then: almost the entire peninsula (including modern day North Korea) was ruled by the Silla dynasty from their ancient capital, Gyeongju. Today that city – tucked into one of the valleys beneath Seokguram – is our base for the night, the third on our South Korean road trip to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Kia Motors UK. We left the impressive Soul EV behind us on Jeju island, and are now driving the new Kia Niro, one of the very first off the production line. A parallel hybrid, its petrol and electric power units work seamlessly together (we don’t even notice the change as we drive), meaning far higher fuel economy and lower emissions. It’s also a pleasure to drive: comfortable, smooth and luxurious with plenty of connectivity too. (The wireless smartphone charging facility is a brilliant addition). After leaving Jeju, our first stop on the mainland was the vibrant southern port of Busan. South Korea’s second largest city after Seoul, Busan is also renowned for its mountains, beaches, hot springs and seafood. Keen to sample the latter, we visited the town’s sprawling Jagalchi Fish Market, where you can buy pretty much anything imaginable from beneath the waves – and plenty more that isn’t. Grabbing a delicious, steaming selection (including fish kimchi and sea worms – both considerably more tasty than they sound), we sidestepped the hustle and took our factory-fresh Niro to picnic by the ocean’s edge. An enjoyable 60 minutes’ drive north of bustling Busan, Gyeongju is a completely different experience. With its pretty temples, palaces and gardens, Korea’s ancient capital is all peace and serenity. To fully embrace the historic experience, we decided to park up the Niro at a traditional ‘Hanok’, or guesthouse, where visitors sleep on heated floors with just a ‘yo’ (padded quilt) for comfort. It’s one of the best night’s sleeps of the entire trip. Some 1,300 years ago, Gyeongju – with its traditional architecture and grand burial mounds – was one of the most powerful cities on the planet, with more than a million inhabitants. Today its population is just a quarter of that, but ‘the museum without walls’ still holds more tombs, temples, rock carvings, pagodas and palace ruins than anywhere else in South Korea. Not to mention, of course, the giant Buddha in that extraordinary hillside grotto above, maintaining his eternal watch over Korea’s ancient capital. *** This story is the second of a five part series. [See image gallery at www.autoguide.com] The redesigned Kia Rio isn’t the most flashy debut at this year’s Paris Motor Show, but it is a significant model that a lot of people will actually buy. The Kia Rio is the Korean automaker’s best-selling car worldwide, so this was a big debut for the brand. Kia promises the fourth-generation model is better to drive and that it has more advanced safety features than the one it replaces, all while still being efficient and affordable. The car has been redesigned to give off a more mature vibe and it has definitely grown up in a lot of ways, besides being physically bigger than the one replaces. That size increase means the hatch has a larger cargo capacity than before. Get the Flash Player to see this player. ALSO SEE: 2016 Paris Motor Show Coverage The dashboard and center stack controls have also been redesigned and are now angled towards the driver, while Kia’s new infotainment interface allowed the number of buttons on the center console to be cut down for a dashboard that’s less cluttered. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be offered. Kia says the Rio has the most spacious cabin in its class and also that it’s also the first car in its class to offer automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. North American powertrain details weren’t released at the Paris show, but Kia did say it will be powered by a turbo three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine and a diesel motor in other parts of the world. The gas engine gets 100 horsepower and 127 pound-ft of torque and is crazy fuel efficient. Unfortunately, it’s not known if North Americans will get either engine, but do know that the 2018 Kia Rio will go on sale around the world in early 2017. The 2017 Kia Sedona has earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. Helping qualify it for the highest award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is the addition of optional automatic braking technology. Previously, the minivan’s front crash prevention rating was basic, but with the new technology it has received a superior rating. Like earlier models, the 2017 Kia Sedona earns good ratings in all IIHS crashworthiness evaluations. On IIHS track tests at 12 mph and 25 mph, a Sedona equipped with the new front crash prevention system avoided collisions. The system also includes a forward collision warning component that meets National Highway Traffic Safety Administration criteria. SEE ALSO: Kia Recalls 220K Sedona Minivans Over Rusty Hood Latches In order to qualify for an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. It must also earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention. “Current automotive design themes generally employ sinuous curves to create their visual appeal, but Kia is following a straight-line approach to styling. Literally. Schreyer’s design philosophy emphasizing the “simplicity of the straight line” is clearly evident in the redesigned 2017 Kia Cadenza. Spanning the length of the new Cadenza, this linear detail is linked with Z-shaped lighting patterns in the headlights and taillights, creating a crisp, elegant look as opposed to the frequently overcompensating character lines of other brands.” Click to Read More Lees hele artikel

Connect with Jonathan on his social media accounts: Instagram, Twitter All photography was done by London-based photographer Mark Chilvers. Visit his website! *** INTO THE SOUL OF JEJU The whistles sound all around us as we sit on the rocky beach at Samdal-ri . Hooded heads appear from beneath the waves, closely followed by that unique sound: half shriek, half high-pitched wail. This is Jeju Island, a tropical haven off South Korea’s southwest shore. And the whistles announce the surfacing of haenyeo – the famous “sea women” of Jeju, who’ve been diving these waters in search of seaweed and shellfish for more than 400 years. As each emerges to fill her floating net with spoils from the seabed, she empties her lungs with the trademark whistle – a time-honoured technique to rapidly expel carbon dioxide – before immediately diving again. Jeju is the first stop for us on an epic road-trip across South Korea, to celebrate Kia Motors UK’s 25th anniversary. The country’s largest island, Jeju’s beautiful beaches, ancient culture and breathtaking scenery have long made it a holiday favourite, but it also has serious green credentials. The World Conservation Congress was held here in September 2012, and the island is at the forefront of South Korea’s ambitious carbon-free electricity generation schemes. It’s fitting then, that our ride for this leg of the journey is the Kia Soul EV – a supremely silent electric drive that handles with pleasing precision. Kia’s first battery-electric vehicle to be sold globally, it manages a hefty 132 miles to each charge, which is plenty for our exploration of the island. All we need to remember is to plug the Soul EV into one of Jeju’s many “public fast chargers” at the end of each day (the batteries are mounted out of the way beneath the car, in a special casing which protects them from stone and gravel damage) then simply hop in and drive a fully charged vehicle in the morning. The food on Jeju is a particular treat, from the traditional Korean barbecue (especially ‘heukdwaeji’ – pork from the local black-skinned pig) to the ever-present (and ever delicious) kimchi. On our final day at Hallim – a village on Jeju’s northern shore – a group of young haenyeo kindly share their lunch of freshly-caught sea urchins with us too. The women are students at the state-of-the-art Hansupul Haenyeo School: training to follow the centuries-old ways of the sea women. And, according to one of their instructors, Lee Hak Cheul, it’s about considerably more than just future employment. “These women have a big responsibility to their culture, to their island and to their country,” he tells us. “It’s important to keep the old traditions alive.” That’s Jeju all over – a sun kissed blend of old traditions and new innovations. After just two days exploring the island in the Soul EV we’re sad to leave, but the open road – and the mainland – beckons… *** This story is the first of a five part series. True to our commitment to becoming a leading green brand, Kia Motors is already making significant progress in reducing our environmental impact. The ongoing efforts to improve production methods over the past 12 months have resulted in lower greenhouse gas emissions, less waste and reduced consumption of resources. In addition, Kia has taken further initiatives to expand green spaces around its major production sites. In celebration of today’s International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, read on to find out more about Kia’s eco-friendly practices! Greater push for efficiency In order to reduce the waste of raw materials, Kia has taken steps to improve production methods with a push for greater efficiency. Since 2014, Kia’s clean manufacturing processes have resulted in a 12.4% per-unit reduction in the volume of raw materials consumed such as steel and paint. Waste water treatment facility at the Kia Hwaseong Plant in Korea With a range of measures aimed at water conservation including the employee water conservation campaign and improvement of water recovery during manufacturing, Kia has also managed to decrease total water consumption by 5.5% since 2015. The more efficient use of raw materials has resulted in the reduction of waste despite the growth in production. Kia is also making extra efforts to recycle by finding alternative uses for nearly 94% of waste materials. These measures have been incredibly successful; the Sohari manufacturing facility, boasting a production capacity of 340,000 units annually, has generated no landfill waste since 2008. Drop in emissions Kia also seeks to reduce carbon dioxide emissions during production through close and careful monitoring of emission rates. In fact, Kia is the first Korean company to utilize third-party evaluations, with the Korea Energy Management Corporation tracking gas emissions from its service and production facilities. As a result, per-unit emission of carbon dioxide during production has decreased by 2.8% annually. Meanwhile, emissions from Kia vehicles have also been slashed dramatically and are now 53% lower than in 2003. The paint shop in Kia”s Mexico production plant is one of the cleanest in Mexico Kia is also employs state-of-the-art technology to further reduce its environmental footprint. The Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) system found in the paint shop of the Mexico production facility collects volatile organic compounds onsite and purified contaminants before releasing air into the atmosphere. Massive green spaces around the Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia plant in the US In addition, Kia further eases environmental impact through the creation of green spaces around its production facilities. With the total of 4.94 million trees planted across its worldwide production sites, Kia has introduced a high proportion of green areas to prevent soil contamination and ensure carbon dioxide emissions are alleviated through natural means. Green areas, including a flower garden, can be found at the Zilina production plant in Slovakia As of 2015, the green spaces created around Kia’s production sites totaled an area of 3,507,276 m2, a figure equivalent to 858 soccer fields. Kia has invested millions of dollars in green initiatives for its domestic plants alone and our ecofriendly practices are far from over. Year after year, investments in green programs are increasing and many new initiatives are expected to roll out for Kia’s global network in the near future. The brand’s efforts in the development of green cars and the use of recyclable and ecofriendly materials in vehicles will further seek to reduce our impact on the environment. Kia’s effective innovations in reducing the impact of our production facilities and vehicles on the environment will ensure a brighter future and a cleaner place for generations to come. So often, Kia’s development efforts go further than just automobile design and engineering. This year, Kia Motors and the Korean National Commission for UNESCO (KNCU) teamed up once again for its 11th annual Kia Global Workcamp. Collaborating with UNESCO and the renowned International Workcamp, Kia has set out to provide overseas students a chance to discover and experience local community development efforts. The 2016 Kia Global Workcamp took place in Muan-gun, Jeolla-nam do province of Korea. The Muan Tidal Flat is known to support the livelihood of the local people as well as 300 species of birds and 150 other lifeforms. First to be listed as a national wetland protection area in Korea, the area, in recent years, is being slowly threatened by industrial development and tourism. To further the ongoing efforts of preservation, eleven international volunteers from eleven countries (Mongolia, Laos, Germany, Lithuania, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia, Estonia, Hungary and Belarus) and six Korean volunteers were handpicked to participate in conservation activities for the local ecosystems. With full financial support from Kia, volunteers spent two weeks taking part in environmental preservation work and cultural experiences. From preserving tidal flats and creating educational programs for locals to learning about traditional fishing culture and visiting landmarks, Global Workcamp participants experienced the breadth of Korea’s cultural activities. In keeping with the multinational theme of the program, each volunteer also had a chance to share traditions and cultural elements from his or her home country. Since 2006, Kia has recognized youth as a driving force for social change and has created opportunities for young people to participate firsthand in activities that foster sustainable development, cultural diversity and social action. In doing so, we hope to have contributed to nurturing talented and mindful citizens of the world. Kia’s Global Workcamp is one of many global social initiatives sponsored by Kia. Stay tuned for more news from Kia as we continue to support and inspire social change worldwide! Lees hele artikel

Increasing demand for improved performance and efficiency The latest fever among car manufacturers and automobile connoisseurs is the 8-speed automatic transmission (AT). While traditional automatic transmissions have been available in four or five-speeds, many vehicle developers in recent years have been working to raise the gear count to offer seven and eight-speeds. Despite a later start in the game, Kia Motors has been quick to join the ranks of global powertrain makers to deliver high performance transmissions. In 2009, Kia introduced its own 6-speed AT and went on to develop the 8-speed transmission for rear-wheel drive (RWD) vehicles. And Kia remains dedicated to developing more advanced transmissions that will provide consumers with better fuel efficiency and performance. Finally, after four years of research and development, Kia has revealed its new state-of-the-art front-wheel drive (FWD) 8-speed automatic transmission. This exceptional development is especially significant as the new transmission, with 143 newly patented technologies, is the first of its kind to be developed in-house by a car manufacturer. A transmission breakthrough The transmission is perhaps one of the most important parts of a vehicle as it is responsible for delivering the power of the engine to the wheels. Due to the mechanics of the automatic transmission system, vehicles that employ automatic transmissions tend to have a slower response.. To combat this, Kia’s new 8-speed AT comes with structural and functional enhancements for sleeker and more responsive acceleration and improved driving experience. While Kia’s engineers have ample experience with 8-speed transmissions for RWD vehicles, incorporating the same number of gears into a FWD car model proved to be quite a challenge. Simplifying the structure and control valves, the new 8-speed AT is a compact and efficient unit positioned under the bonnet, weighing in at 3.5 kg less than the conventional 6-speed transmission. The new automatic transmission boasts of the smallest oil pump of any transmission in its class. As the oil pump is often the main source of power loss in an automatic transmission system, the smaller pumps save energy while allowing for an even distribution of hydraulic oil throughout the unit. Kia’s engineering team also reduced the number of control valves in the transmission and incorporated a more direct mechanical link to the engine. This structural improvement has resulted in quicker gear shifts for higher fuel economy and improved NVH.. Check out the video for more information on the key technologies and benefits of Kia’s new transmission. New driving experience with new 8AT Kia’s new 8-speed AT is a light package that delivers better performance and fuel efficiency, making it highly suitable for large high-end sedans. Among Kia’s model line-up, the 2017 Kia Cadenza, is the first vehicle to employ this newly revealed transmission. Thanks to the smoother gear changes of the 8AT, the Cadenza provides effortless acceleration and precise controlling while driving. The new 8-speed automatic transmission will also be applied to a number of midsize and larger FWD models in the future. Continue to keep your eyes on Kia as we continue to ‘shift’ in to the future with new and innovative automobile technologies! Lees hele artikel
