The SO-KO Road Trip Blog series is a 5-part guest posting series by UK travel and lifestyle journalist Jonathan Thompson on his 9 day trip through South Korea. Jonathan regularly writes for leading UK media and was recently honored with the ‘Travel Writer of the Year Award’ by the British Guild of Travel Writers. Connect with Jonathan on his social media accounts: Instagram, Twitter All photography was done by London-based photographer Mark Chivers. Visit his website! *** TAEKWONDO TOWN There’s a reason why Taekwondowon is located so near the geographical heart of South Korea. It has nothing to do with proximity to the town of Muju or the history of taekwondo itself – and everything to do with Olympic ambition. A $228 million temple to taekwondo, this shiny, state-of-the-art complex opened in 2014 with two clear missions: to become an international centre for the discipline, and to train South Koreans to once again dominate it on the world stage. To do that, authorities decided to construct the centre here at Muju – equidistant from South Korea’s two major cities, Seoul and Busan and at the centre of a triangle of important towns at the country’s core: Daejeon, Jeonju and Daegu. Wherever you are on mainland South Korea, you can drive to Taekwondowon in under three hours. And if there’s one thing South Koreans like as much as driving, it’s taekwondo. “It’s great for taekwondo to have such a wonderful international headquarters, and for us to be able to use it to share our national sport with so many foreign visitors,” says Yeon Ho Yoo, one of Taekwondowon’s instructors as he shows us around. “Hopefully in the future this will help South Korea gain more medals too.” We’ve arrived at Taekwondowon on the fifth day of our epic South Korean road trip, marking the 25th anniversary of Kia Motors UK. Getting to grips with the new Kia Niro en route, we’ve been particularly impressed with its multiple driver assist features, from the Lane Keep Assist system on the longer legs to the Hill Start Assist Control up here in South Korea’s undulating green centre. Back at Taekwondowon, I’ve got some seriously hard work ahead of me. Specifically, a number of hard wooden blocks to smash with my appendages. Fortunately Yeon Ho Yoo is excellent at explaining the principles. The secret to smashing the blocks – and the colourful practice plates which come before them – is a combination of focus, breathing and connecting with a precise part of your body, he says. In this case, it’s the lower knuckles of my right hand. After a number of dummy runs, a piece of wood is finally held up in front of me. “Three-two-one-smash,” says Yeon, matter-of-factly. I take a deep breath, centre my balance and then – with a rather terrifying crack – the lower knuckles of my right fist go straight through the wood. I look at the results in both shock and jubilation. “With belief, you can do anything,” says Yeon. It’s impossible to argue: the evidence of that truth lies in the shattered pieces of wood littering the ground beneath me. *** This story is the second of a five part series. “So, yeah, the idea of Kia doing luxury is no longer novel. The Cadenza is not even the fanciest Kia now that the big, rear-drive K900 exists. But the 2017 Cadenza is not just a car stuffed with nice things, it’s a car that puts those nice things together in a harmonious way—you know, like luxury brands do.” Click to Read More Lees hele artikel

Israel has had a great year in terms of automobile sales as the vehicle delivery record posted in 2015 – 254,000 units – is expected to be broken in the next few weeks. What is more exciting is that for the first time in Israel’s history, the country’s best-selling car is not just a crossover SUV, but none other than our very own Kia Sportage! Of the 245,000 new vehicles to hit the road from January to September this year, the Sportage has taken the top spot with over 12,300 units sold. Kia Picanto, our charming city car and the best-selling car in Israel last year, follows as a close second with approximately 11,900 units delivered. Sales of SUVs have been rising in recent years, with a growing variety of stylish vehicles in the market. The Sportage enjoys popularity thanks to its wide range of technical features unavailable in other competitive models in its price category. With sophisticated upgrades such as active steering, automatic braking, lane departure and forward collision warning systems, our prize-winning SUV punches well above its price-point. Kia is also highly ranked second in monthly and total sales in Israel, only conceding the top spot to its sister company Hyundai Motor. Kia Israel was named one of the top performing Kia distributors in 2015, and we are looking forward to sharing more great news towards the end of this year. Stay tuned as we bring you more successes from our global network! Lees hele artikel

Hallo

Sinds enkele dagen start onze kia sorento anders.

With cars getting safer, smarter and easier to drive, the extent to which customers enjoy the driving experience is starting to become a measure for vehicle performance. Because driving is a fully engaging and sensory experience, Kia has long been focused on developing technologies to minimize unpleasant distractions while on the road. Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) – the noise and vibrations that result from contact between car components and between tires and the road – directly affect the tactile and auditory aspect of our driving experience. For a long time, Kia has been taking measures to reduce the abrasive noises and maximize pleasant sounds in the cabin. Combatting NVH through ‘Active Noise Control’ and ‘Active Sound Design,’ we are making proactive efforts to eliminate distractions and provide a sense of stability for Kia drivers worldwide. Cancelling Road Noise Engine components working together sometimes results in unwanted noise. One of the major sources of noise in a car is the engine. Kia has focused on developing and perfecting the engine mounting systems to securely fasten the engine and reduce any unnecessary noise and vibration. Kia has also refined external fixtures such as the side-view mirror to decrease wind noise while applying sound-absorbing carpets to muffle the noise from contact between tires and the road. We also go as far as keeping the number of holes drilled during car assembly to a minimum in order to reduce noise from the car body. In addition, Kia creates a silent cabin without employing an overwhelming number of noise-preventing vehicle mechanisms by sending out counter-waves of unpleasant noise wavelengths. Creating Pleasant Sounds Engineers pay attention to even the smallest of noises coming from your car and make sure they are pleasant to the ears, and we at Kia are designing sounds for turn indicators, alerts, exhaust noise and even the sounds from opening and closing your doors to ensure that customers are not be subject to any abrasive operational noises. Owners of some models are also able to choose from a range of customized engine sounds to further personalize the driving experience. Recently, Kia has partnered with Harman Kardon – a leading manufacturer of audio equipment – to develop a premium audio system. Available on the latest models in our vehicle line-up, the rich, high-resolution sound system is also a dynamic and refined source for pleasant sounds. By treating NVH with the upmost priority, Kia seeks to reduce the stresses of everyday driving and introduce more fun for an ultimate driving experience. Kia’s NVH technology development grows more advanced with each passing year, so stay tuned for more sound-related innovations coming your way. ▶ Find out more about Kia’s fundamental safety features Lees hele artikel

automaat storing (Kia)

Kia’s Green Light Project continues to move forward! In July, Kia returned to Malawi for the fourth year to further the objectives of the company’s main overseas CSR initiative. Twenty-five Kia employee volunteers were selected this year to travel to Malawi. In fact, so many volunteer applications were submitted that some friendly competition ensued during the participant selection process. For 10 days, Kia volunteers traveled to the cities of Lilongwe and Salima. Upon their arrival on July 30, the volunteers soon noticed the effects of the severe drought that had affected the area over the prior four months. The volunteers dove in head first, working to alleviate the effects of the disastrous drought. This year’s project focused primarily on three areas: youth education support, medical assistance and improvement of living areas. Kia employee volunteers started off their trip by repairing the classrooms and the student living quarters of the Kia Green Light School (KGLS). Created in partnership with international NGO KFHI, the KGLS is a secondary school for local youth in the impoverished area of Lilongwe. After the maintenance work, the volunteers were lucky enough to attend the school’s first graduation ceremony and participate in local graduation celebrations attended by over 100 residents (pictured above). In Salima – located two hours from Lilongwe – volunteers participated in the operation of the travelling clinic, library and cinema programs. These mobility programs were made possible by Kia’s donation of an ambulance and two box trucks in 2013. Currently the Green Light Project includes not only Malawi but other areas in need, such as Tanzania, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda. Kia Motors also has further plans to extend the program to South America. Learn more about the program on our website and look out for more news regarding our humanitarian efforts and activities around the world. Lees hele artikel

Kia Motors has many goals in mind when it comes to designing and creating cars, but among our objectives, passenger comfort and safety are at the top of the list. To ensure that drivers and passengers are safe on the road, we have invested hours in rigorous research and testing to deliver the high-quality safety features found in our vehicles. While cutting-edge, high-tech safety features certainly play a role in comfortable driving, it is important to realize that the fundamentals of vehicle safety start with very basic features. Join Kia BUZZ today as we discuss brakes and airbags, the most basic and essential elements of car safety! Brakes The anti-lock braking system (ABS), first developed in the late 1920s for aircrafts, is the most standard automobile safety system found in vehicles today. Current systems are more responsive than their predecessors, allowing for shorter stopping distances while providing better stability and control during sudden braking situations. The most important benefit of ABS is that it uses sensors to monitor speeds of each wheel to prevent them from locking up while braking. By controlling the over-rotation of wheels while the brakes are applied, ABS provides drivers with more control of the car and comes in handy during emergency situations. The Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) button enables convenient stopping and parking on inclines To accommodate for the increasing speed of automobiles, vehicles today come with two sets of brakes: the pedal brake and the parking brake. The pedal allows drivers to decrease speed or come to a full halt by pulsing down on the foot pedal. The parking brake lets drivers safely park on sloping terrain, and many Kia vehicles are equipped with an Electric Parking Brake with hill-hold stop feature can be activated with a touch of a button. Airbags We can never forget about airbags when it comes to discussing occupant safety. It is a common misconception that deployed airbags will be a soft and gentle cradle for your face and body. On the contrary, airbags can blast out of their hiding places at more than 200 miles per hour and are hard enough to support and slow a body in motion. Deflating immediately upon deployment, airbags lengthen the time of impact between driver and interior vehicle components to prevent life-threatening injuries during crashes. In order to minimize the deadly force during severe accidents, Kia has made many modifications to airbag systems over the years. Designated as a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), airbags most commonly work in partnership with seatbelts. Upon impact, the seatbelt pre-tensioner – a retraction device that removes slack from your seatbelt – supports and holds passengers firmly in their seats, allowing impact with the inflated airbags in a controlled way. Kia had also added additional improvements to accommodate varying factors during accidents. Our latest vehicle line-up features a full set of airbags including dual-stage front airbag, driver knee airbag, curtain airbags and front/rear side airbags. In recent years, airbags have also been depowered to reduce inflation by 20-30% to minimize airbag injury and accommodate smaller bodies. Brakes and airbags, the most traditional automobile safety systems, are undeniably the most important safety features on the road. Reacting immediately to external threats to keep occupants alive when things go wrong, the systems provide reassurance for a more enjoyable driving experience. We hope that today we have furthered your understanding about these fundamental systems featured on our Kia vehicles and definitely stay tuned as we bring you more stories on the active safety systems that even help you to avoid trouble on the roads. Kia’s 2017 Niro Hybrid small crossover SUV has just reached dealer showrooms, and the Korean automaker is already talking about a battery electric version. This information was revealed to the UK’s Car Dealer Magazine by Kia Motors’ chief operating officer, Tae-Hyun Oh, at the opening of a new flagship dealership in London. “We have just launched Niro in Europe and the United States, but also we always need to meet [increased] local emission regulations,” Oh told the magazine. “So in this sense we are looking at a feasibility study to develop a Niro which is electric,” Oh said referring to the electric version. SEE ALSO: 2017 Kia Niro Video, First Look The Niro shares the same platform as its sister company Hyundai’s Ioniq, which will be available as either an EV, gas-electric hybrid or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. That means the Niro is already prepped to receive an electric drivetrain. If it’s identical to the Ioniq Electric, a 28-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion polymer battery would deliver a range of 155 miles (250 km), based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), or, on the more-realistic EPA test cycle, Hyundai says will the Ioniq is good for 110 miles. Real world driving range would be around 100 miles or so, about the same as the Kia Soul EV, but half of the just revealed 200-mile Renault Zoe. It’s possible that next year’s Paris or Los Angeles auto show would see a Kia Niro EV debut.
