Along with vehicle research and development, automakers have been perfecting the technology of car keys for decades. Once regarded as simple tools that allowed access to your road companions, car keys have come a long way in becoming the sophisticated and clever devices they are today. From good old-fashioned metal keys to modern day smart keys, Kia has made various modifications to key designs over the years. Over the years, Kia has developed innovative car keys that simultaneous serve as distinctive brand statements. Take a look at some of Kia’s most unique and stand-out keys! Smart key released with the 2004 Kia Opirus (Amanti) Like many automakers, Kia’s car keys started off as simple, metal types that simply served to lock and unlock car doors. In 2004, Kia became the first Korean automobile manufacturer to apply the smart key concept to its vehicles, namely the premium flagship model Opirus (also widely known as Amanti). Since this transition, smart keys have become an indicator of luxury and sophistication and are evolving to incorporate more functional features and innovative design. In 2011, Kia released a newly designed key to accompany two popular models, the Kia Picanto and Rio (called Morning and Pride in the Korean market, respectively). Taking inspiration from smooth and shapely pebbles, the small and rounded design served as much as an attractive accessory as a functional component for the car. While the key had no built-in buttons whatsoever, it fully served its function in unlocking and starting up the car. With the release of the Cadenza (known as the K7 in the Korean market) and the Quoris (also named K900 and K9 in various regional markets) in 2012, Kia made radical adjustments to vehicle keys for a touch of added luxury. The keys were revealed in the form of card keys and were thin enough to be carried in the wallets of drivers. Also unaccompanied by any buttons, the card mechanism boasted a simplistic and clean design that allowed keyless entry and easy start of the ignition. The variations do not stop there. Kia celebrated the launch of the second generation Cerato in Korea (more commonly known as K3 in the market) by developing an entirely different – wearable – smart key. Available only to 1,500 customers as a limited edition product, the key took the form of a sleek and trendy watch. Providing both style and function, the watch allowed for extended control of the Cerato with features such as the familiar keyless unlock and ignition start function as well as the smart trunk system. Currently, most of these variations in key design are primarily featured in the Korean market and have yet to venture overseas. However with the progress being made in smart and connectivity technologies, there is no saying that these key options will remain limited forever. Kia has a compact SUV debuting later this year, and it finally has a name. The Korean automaker has reportedly filed a trademark for the Stonic nameplate and Kia World reports that the company’s R&D center in Korea has been working on the model for quite some time. The Kia Stonic has been developed alongside a new Hyundai small SUV, which spy photographers have caught testing around the world. The vehicles will compete with other compact crossovers like the Honda HR-V, Chevrolet Trax, and Nissan Juke. Both models are expected to share core powertrain technology but like other models across Kia and Hyundai’s lineups, expect them to look drastically different inside and out. Kia revealed the game-changing Stinger earlier this week at the 2017 NAIAS and since then the automobile world has been abuzz about the brand’s striking new sports sedan. [See image gallery at www.autoguide.com] Kia unveiled the new Stinger sport sedan at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show and it ushered in a new era for the Korean automaker. Targeting a whole new tier of performance and luxury, the Stinger has a lot going for it. Under the hood, two engines are being offered: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 255 hp or an awesome twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 engine that will make 365 hp. With a zero-to-62-mph time of about 5 seconds, it’s easy to see why people are getting so excited. We had a chance to speak with two important figures at Kia: Peter Schreyer, the brand’s chief designer, who oversaw the design of the Stinger, and Albert Beirmann, executive VP of vehicle testing and high-performance development at Kia Motors. Both shared details about the Stinger, its development, and its place in the Kia lineup. See Also: 2018 Kia Stinger is a Sport Sedan Shaped Middle Finger to German Rivals It Benchmarked a BMW Beirmann, the engineering guru who used to helm BMW’s M division, explained the high benchmark for the rear-wheel-drive Kia. “We used the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe as the reference,” Beirmann said. “I need a baseline benchmark for performance, and the dynamics of the BMW is where I wanted to start.” With its 114.4-inch wheelbase, the Stinger features a longer wheelbase than many of its competitors, a trait that lends itself to better high-speed stability and road-trip worthiness. “However, you have to balance that straight-line stability with agility,” Beirmann said. Beirmann also said that the Stinger features a very low seating position, something that 4 Series drivers would be familiar with. “It’s very low and sportscar-like,” he said, “but it’s also quite spacious. I would be able to sit in the rear seats if I set the driver seat to my preferred position.” Its Design Was Inspired by GTs of the 1970s Discussing the design of the car, design chief Peter Schreyer pointed out that he was inspired by the classic grand tourers of the past, specifically singling out cars from the 1970s. “The original grand tourers from the ’70s were the ones people would drive from Paris to central France,” Schreyer said. “They’re meant to be fast, but not super aggressive. You’re meant to arrive in style.” Looking at some of the interesting GT cars from the ‘70s, it seems like the Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT was a nice inspiration, a two-door four-seater with a fastback design that’s very similar to the Stinger. Interestingly enough, the Stinger arrived in production form as a result of the overwhelmingly positive reception to the Kia GT concept that debuted back in 2011. Weight Was a Huge Concern As a car with a ton of power, luxury appointments, and technology, there were some concerns about how much the car would weigh. Kia tried to ensure it didn’t have performance-killing extra pounds. “As a four-cylinder, it’s 1,640 kg,” said Beirmann said. That’s 3,615 lbs, which is on par with the rest of the sport sedan class. “The six-cylinder, all-wheel drive model tops out at 1,800 kg (3,968 lb).” That might sound like a lot but isn’t too bad, considering the Infiniti Q50 Red Sport weighs around 4,054 lb. It Was Designed in Germany and Built in Korea Both Schreyer and Beirmann have had a lot of experience working for the big names in Germany, so they tapped into that expertise for the Stinger, which is a good thing. Kia’s Frankfurt design studio was in charge of the Stinger and Beirmann put the sedan through 10,000 km of testing on the grueling Nurburgring circuit to make sure its performance was up to European standards. Beirmann said that the time on the Nurburgring proved beneficial to test the car’s durability and fine tune its handling and performance. The result is a very European car. If Kia intends to compete with the likes of BMW, Audi, and Mercedes, there is no other way. Despite all this work done in Europe, the car is still going to be built in Korea in the same plant as the luxurious K900 sedan. It’s Going to Surprise You If there was one reoccurring trend with the Stinger, it’s how surprising it is. The goal that Schreyer’s team had was to design a car that would push the boundaries of the Kia brand. “It’s giving Kia a sportier edge,” he said, adding that “it shows what Kia is capable of.” Schreyer was comfortable with calling the Stinger a halo car, despite being dwarfed in size by the K900 sedan. Both he and Beirmann agreed that this is the highest performing car that the automaker offers, and, as such, it will help excited customers and bring more interest to the brand. Beirmann was adamant that the car is a blast to drive. In Europe, Kia will offer the Stinger with a diesel engine but the automaker has no plans of bringing the oil burner to the U.S. Instead, the U.S. could benefit from electrified versions of the Kia Stinger, including the possibility of a fully electric model. He admitted that packaging a fully electric powertrain in the Stinger has different requirements, but hinted that the development team has considered it, such as incorporating the batteries in the transmission tunnel. “I have full confidence in our engineers, and if we need the EV Stinger to come to light, our engineers can come up with ideas for putting the batteries into this vehicle.” For now, Kia doesn’t have plans for a Stinger EV and will keep an eye on demand to see if it’s warranted. The 2017 Detroit Auto Show was pretty quiet this year with no big surprises or crazy supercar debuts to steal the spotlight. The focus of this year’s show seemed to be on production cars that real people actually buy. A few hugely significant new cars were unveiled, so here are the Top 5 most important production car reveals from the show. [See image gallery at www.autoguide.com] Kia may already have the best debut of the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, and the show hasn’t even officially started yet: The new Stinger sports sedan is finally here and it packages 365 horsepower in a fun-to-drive chassis and wraps it in a surprisingly sexy exterior. Drawing inspiration from the Kia GT Concept that was first seen six years ago, the 2018 Kia Stinger is a rear-wheel-drive based luxury sedan that was honed on the grueling Nurburgring racetrack. It is one of the most exciting debuts from Kia in a long time and is being hailed as the sportiest and quickest Kia yet. Kia is offering two engines in the Stinger, both mated to eight-speed automatic transmissions. Both engines are available on rear-drive and AWD models. The base engine is a turbocharged four-cylinder unit that makes an estimated 255 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The optional engine is a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6, which is expected to make 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. Kia hopes the Stinger will hit 62 mph in just 5.1 seconds and achieve a top speed of 167 mph with the V6 engine. Click here for full 2017 Detroit Auto Show Coverage While rear-wheel-drive models get a mechanical limited slip differential to more effectively put the power to the ground and increase traction, all-wheel-drive models get a new Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control system, which automatically applies power and braking force to the correct wheel to keep the car tracking where drivers need it to. The car rides on performance tires no matter what engine is picked, while V6 models get a staggered setup with ultra high-performance tires and vented Brembo brakes. The chassis uses a lot of high-strength steel to make it very rigid and stiff, which apparently leads to a quieter cabin and less vibration. The ride is controlled by a first for Kia: an electronically adjustable suspension called Dynamic Stability Damping Control. The system allows the Stinger to be more responsive and agile by softening the front shocks and firming up the rear. Additionally, improved high-speed stability is available when the system stiffens the front shocks and softens the rear. There are five different drive modes: Personal, Eco, Sport, Comfort, and Smart, which adjust the variable ratio steering, shift patterns, and throttle response. Featuring a bold yet sleek body style, the Stinger packs a few other elements that are essential in defining this car as a grand touring sedan. First and foremost is the rear-wheel-drive proportions: the long hood and muscular rear haunches. Between those two identifying factors is an extended wheelbase, hinting that this car has significant interior space. At 114.4 inches, Kia points out that the Stinger’s wheelbase is longer than the Audi A4, Infiniti Q50, Lexus IS, BMW 4 Gran Coupe, and even the Lexus GS and Mercedes CLS. It’s also longer overall (190.2 inches) and wider (73.6 inches) than the others in the segment, allowing for spacious accommodations. It’s a sharp looking sedan with a fastback shape, but the design is also functional. Improved airflow around the car is achieved by using air curtains up front, wheel arch gills, and an integrated rear diffuser. Around back is a quad tailpipe design that hints at the Stinger’s performance capability. While the Stinger is a sport sedan through and through, it packs a lot of driver assistance and convenience features including driver attention alert, forward collision alert with automatic braking, a lane keep assist feature, adaptive cruise control, and rear cross traffic alert. There’s also an available color head-up display. Kia also packs a wireless phone charger into the center console and is promoting that its UVO infotainment system varies slightly between models equipped with four cylinders and six cylinders. Four-cylinder equipped models come with six-speakers and a seven-inch touchscreen, while six-cylinder models up the speaker count to nine and include an external amplifier. Buyers can also choose an upgraded sound system from Harmon/Kardon that pumps out 720 watts of sound through 15 speakers and a seat-mounted subwoofer. The interior of this car is nicely appointed with available nappa leather and aeronautical-inspired circular vents. The gauge cluster is made up of a combination of analog and digital displays, and those gauges feature metallic rings and sporty red needles. Pricing for the 2018 Kia Stinger hasn’t been revealed, but it is expected to arrive at dealerships late this year. Visit his website! *** SEOUL SEARCING An old Korean proverb goes “even if you have to crawl on your knees, get to Seoul!” Fortunately for us, we have a brand new Kia Niro to get us there instead. Leaving the California-esque beaches of South Korea’s east coast behind us, we drive west on the three hour route into the capital. As with the countryside beforehand, the Niro underlines its worth in urban surrounds too, proving nippy and maneuverable as Seoul grows around us. Its quiver of electronic driver assist features, including Blind Spot and Rear Cross Traffic Warning systems are very useful for peace of mind when driving in busy, unfamiliar surrounds like this. Seoul is more than just a city. With 24.5 million people living in the greater metro area and 10.5 million in the city centre alone, it’s a cosmopolitan behemoth, full of noise and colour. From the streets around Apgujeong’s chic boutiques to the hip bars and restaurants of Hongdae and Edae, it’s a pulsing neon ocean of activity – and we’re eager to dive into it. Our first stop is the National Museum of Korea – a grand, marble-lined building showcasing Korea’s ancient riches in an amazing warren of light-filled corridors and atriums. Next, after fuelling up on traditional bowls of bubbling bibimbap (a delicious, hot rice stew for the uninitiated), we move onto Mok-dong market, where we explore the lively stalls before stumbling into an impromptu English-speaking taekwondo lesson at the International Kumgang Centre next door. This time (as opposed to Muju earlier this week) our tuition focuses more on basic combat moves – but there’s still time to smash wooden blocks with our worst vices scribbled on them. (Take that procrastination!) Kimchi – the fermented vegetable side dish – has been a constant throughout our trip, and we spend an enjoyable hour at the quirky museum dedicated to it, Kimchican. (Although sadly there’s no time to take up the option to tour the museum in traditional Korean dress, as many of our fellow visitors do). Fittingly our final meal – at a family-run restaurant called Gun Ja Ne near the south bank of the Han River – is a steaming, home cooked kimchi stew. And it’s one of the most delicious of our entire journey. Our road trip has encompassed the entire length of South Korea, from the bottom of tropical Jeju island in the south to the heart of Seoul in the north. It’s taken us a little over a week and during our four-wheeled adventure we’ve been bowled by everything we’ve experienced and everybody we’ve met. This is an incredibly warm, vibrant country that has so much to offer, and so many different towns and destinations to explore. My advice? Everybody should crawl to Seoul at some point in their lives, however they see fit. And as soon as they arrive, they should hire a car. Not only is this fascinating mega-city considerably more accessible with your own wheels, it is also the gateway to an extraordinary country beyond. *** This story is the fifth and final part of the series. The 2017 Detroit Auto Show is sure to bring some interesting debuts to kick off the New Year. Automakers have been teasing what they plan on unveiling at this year’s North American International Auto Show, but expect a few surprises to debut as well. At last year’s show, Lexus impressed with the new LC 500, while the Acura Precision Concept got us excited for the brand’s future. Detroit also gave Americans the first look at the hot BMW M2, while Chrysler ushered in a new era of minivans with the new Pacifica. 2017 Detroit Auto Show Coverage We expect the 2017 Detroit Auto Show to feature plenty of crossovers and SUVs as the segment continues to boom. Here’s a preview of what to expect at this year’s show. Stay glued to AutoGuide.com as we will be reporting live from the show floor with full coverage of all the surprises automakers have in store. Audi Q8 Concept Audi has already teased the Q8 Concept that it’s bringing to Detroit, which will eventually be made into a production model. It will feature coupe-like styling with the spaciousness you would expect from a full-size SUV, with the model sitting at the top of Audi’s SUV range. It’s also branded as an e-Tron concept, meaning it will be electrified in some way. “With the Audi Q8 concept, we have created a new spearhead within our Q model line. Its design strongly evokes sportiness and prestige,” said Audi Head of Design Marc Lichte. “What’s more, we believe an important aspect of this showcar is that it offers a spacious interior with four equally comfortable seats, even with the flat roof line.” BMW 5 Series BMW has already introduced its new 5 Series sedan online, but the 2017 Detroit Auto Show will be the first time the public gets to enjoy it. The more luxurious and lighter sedan also introduced the quickest 5 Series model yet and it doesn’t even sport the M5 nameplate. Instead, it’s the M550i xDrive with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 456 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to accelerate to 60 mph from a standstill in 4.4 seconds. Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Unfortunately, the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 hasn’t been confirmed to make its debut at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, but we can’t imagine the American automaker would pick another venue to unveil it. Spy photographers have caught it testing numerous times in recent months, sporting aggressive styling and a large rear wing hinting that it’s going to be one serious performance machine. Rumor has it the ZR1 is expected to offer more than 700 hp, although its powerplant of choice remains a mystery. Here’s to hoping the American automaker rolls it out in Detroit. Chevrolet Traverse Expected to offer even more space than the current model, the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse has been teased by the American automaker as it enters a new generation. Chevrolet is claiming the new Traverse will have the most third-row legroom in the segment and it appears the styling will borrow cues from the new Equinox. Ford F-150 Spy photographers recently caught the refreshed 2018 Ford F-150 testing, showing off its new front end. The updated pickup is expected to debut in Detriot, helping keep it fresh until the next-generation F-150 arrives. Expect to see subtle details throughout the truck as part of the refresh, as well as Ford’s new 10-speed automatic transmission that was jointly developed with GM. Honda Odyssey Last year, Chrysler introduced the all-new Pacifica minivan in Detroit, and although the segment isn’t as popular as it once was, Honda is looking to impress with a new Odyssey at this year’s show. The fifth-generation Odyssey appears to be an evolution of the current model but with a more sculpted and stylish body. It resembles the lower and longer Odyssey sold in other markets like Japan and it will be interesting to see if that translates when the production model appears in North America. Infiniti QX50 Concept Infiniti has already revealed its QX50 Concept online, previewing the brand’s next-generation, mid-size premium SUV. The concept is an evolution of the 2016 QX Sport Inspiration and it also previews the brand’s rollout of its autonomous drive support technologies. Infiniti will also show off its new VC-Turbo engine technology in Detroit, which is the world’s first production-ready variable compression ratio engine. Kia GT Over the last month, Kia has been slowly teasing a new model with a series of videos titled “The Curve Ahead.” The Korean automaker says that the vehicle will be its fastest-accelerating model yet, and has been developed on the world famous Nurburgring. The all-new car promises to marry “heart-pounding performance with purposeful and progressive design,” while the latest video previews the actual car. “This new vehicle is going to fundamentally change the global image of Kia,” said Peter Schreyer, president and chief design officer for Kia Motors Corporation. “It will revolutionize the way people think about the brand and propel us upwards into a different era. You cannot believe how excited I am about this car.” Lexus LS The production Lexus LC brought plenty of excitement to Detroit last year, and Lexus is following it up with the debut of its next-generation flagship sedan. The original Lexus LS 400 was first introduced at the 1989 Detroit Auto Show, so it’s fitting that the Japanese automaker will bring a new model to this year’s show. It will ride on an extended version of the same platform underpinning the LC 500, offering a more dynamic driving experience, spacious cabin, luxurious appointments and visionary technology. Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and GLA Mercedes-Benz has already introduced the new E-Class Coupe that will make its first public appearance in Detroit, but that’s not all it has in store. The company will show off an updated GLA model at the show, receiving a mid-cycle refresh that is expected to go on sale in the second half of 2017. Up front, it appears the crossover is getting a more rugged appearance while the headlights have been tweaked for a more striking appearance. Nissan Qashqai The Nissan Qashqai is reportedly joining the lineup in North America, likely so Nissan can strengthen its position in the crossover and SUV segments. The Truth About Cars reported that the U.S.-bound Qashqai will make its debut in Detroit this year and that the crossover won’t replace an existing model. Toyota Camry The best-selling car in America is entering a new generation at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, with the introduction of the 2018 Toyota Camry. So far, the Japanese automaker has only released the above image showing off the rear end sporting aggressive styling and sculpted edges, hinting that the Camry will look sportier than ever. The biggest news is that the Camry will use Toyota’s TNGA global architecture and will take advantage of aluminum to shed weight, likely making it more fuel efficient than before. Volkswagen I.D. Concept and Long-Wheelbase Tiguan Volkswagen has confirmed it will debut a new I.D. family model in Detroit and the teaser images hint that it will be another iteration of the company’s Microbus, similar to what was shown at 2016 CES.
