Launches At the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January, Kia announced the launch of our cutting-edge autonomous technology under our DRIVE WiSE sub-brand. Kia is aiming to bring fully automated cars to the road by 2030 and go as far as realizing fully-connected intelligent vehicles. As the second part of our 2020 Fuel Efficiency Road Map, Kia also laid out big plans for advancement in eco-technology development and commercialization. The premiere of the Niro is just the beginning of Kia’s plans to become a leader in the hybrid and green car market. Meanwhile, the al-new Cadenza premium sedan and best-selling Rio subcompact made successful world debuts in 2016. Anniversaries Kia also had some very meaningful anniversaries to celebrate. 2016 marked the 10th year of Peter Schreyer as Chief Design Officer at Kia. As the man behind our design revolution, Mr. Schreyer’s decision to join Kia marked a significant turning point for the brand and celebrating 10 amazing years together was a very meaningful moment. We also celebrated our 10-year partnership with the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal. Having formed a relationship early in his career, it was special to talk to Rafa about changing and growing together over the decade. Events and Achievements Spirits were high as the UEFA EURO championships returned to Europe this year. Kia went on to receive some major awards regarding automobile design and quality. We also placed 69th on Interbrand’s best global brands list, rising five spots from the previous year. Road safety does not only apply to vehicles and people who drive them; it is also crucially important that children learn and understand the rules of safety on the road. For over a decade Kia Motors has been emphasizing the importance children’s education on traffic safety with our very own annual education campaigns. Our 2016 program titled SLOW (Stop, LOok, Wait) took place over the span of July to November and brought educational activities to both children and parents with the aim of promoting pedestrian safety. ENZY DAY The campaign unfolded through two separate programs, with the first program – ENZY DAY – attracting both parents and children. Taking place in department stores throughout Korea and China, ENZY DAY offered educational guides and activities focused on driving and pedestrian safety. Parents were provided with self-education guide books while preschool children were engaged through participatory activities such as pedestrian cross walking and mini car driving exercises, games and traffic safety films. Over 40,000 parents and children gathered at event halls to join in on the fun. Upon completion of the program, each participant was rewarded with a 3D car puzzle and certificate. ENZY KIT Following the culmination of ENZY DAY, the ENZY KIT program served as a traveling educational package with instructors visiting educational institutes for preschoolers in Korea. The kit consisted of educational tools and teaching guides for a fun and engaging way to learn about traffic safety. Instructors utilized materials such as story books, puzzles and even simulated pedestrian crossing through a hands-on experiential exercise. Reaching 450 Kindergartens in Korea, this kit program accumulated nearly 20,000 participants. With further efforts being made in the development of teaching material for the ENZY program, our traffic safety education initiatives are starting to branch out internationally and take root in showrooms and even motor shows worldwide. The Niro sure is going places! With only a few weeks left until the New Year, Kia Niro has managed raise the bar for all hybrid cars by setting a Guinness World Record. Niro at Los Angeles City Hall Making a 3,715.5 mile cross-country trip from Los Angeles, California to New York City, the Niro received a Guinness World Record title for lowest fuel consumption driving across the USA from coast to coast by a hybrid car. The new record setting figure by our HUV (hybrid utility vehicle) was 76.6 miles per gallon (mpg), a feat achieved by no other vehicles to date. Niro at the New York City Hall Piloted by drivers Wayne Gerdes and Robert Winger of CleanMPG, the Niro managed to cover the distance using just 48.5 gallons of gas, equivalent to a mere 4.1 tanks! Officially receiving a Guinness World Record title when it arrived at New York City Hall in downtown Manhattan, the 2017 Kia Niro set a new world record by achieving an incredible 76.6 mpg while driving coast to coast in a hybrid car. The record-setting Niro EX was driven by Wayne Gerdes of Carlsbad, California along with co-driver Robert Winger of Williamsburg, Virginia. The total trip used only 48.5 gallons and the vehicle was not altered in any way for the attempt.
