1. Kia will have a Super Bowl ad for the eighth year in a row. A spokesman for the Korean automaker confirmed Kia will have a presence during Super Bowl LI, which will be played in Houston, Texas. It is the first automaker to confirm a Super Bowl ad buy, but it won’t be the last. Another automaker that has announced its Super Bowl plans is Toyota, which has confirmed it will pull out of Super Bowl LI after appearing in five straight games. Last year, Kia turned to actor Christopher Walken to show off its new Optima. Previous Kia Super Bowl commercials have enlisted the help of other actors like Pierce Brosnan and Laurence Fishburne. SEE ALSO: Kia Taps Christopher Walken for 2016 Super Bowl Commercial Automakers that advertised in this past year’s Super Bowl include Acura, Buick, Honda, Hyundai, Jeep and MINI. Expect to hear a few more confirming their plans later this year. Connect with Jonathan on his social media accounts: Instagram, Twitter All photography was done by London-based photographer Mark Chilvers. Visit his website! *** SLEEP IN HEAVENLY PEACE There’s only one mandatory rule at Baekyangsa Temple: everyone – guests included – must attend morning service at 5am. It’s a profoundly tranquil experience as the Buddhist monks chant, sing and shake instruments, while the first fingers of light reach slowly across the temple floor. Once the hour-long service is over, we emerge blinking into the new day, before each being handed Hogwarts-style brooms. Our task: to shift the dust and stones from the temple’s main courtyard before breakfast. It’s an odd job, but we set about it with gusto, energetically moving debris around the courtyard in our loose-fitting temple clothing. “You’re not really cleaning the floor”, one of the shaven headed monks tells me as I take a breather. “You’re cleaning your mind.” As part of our road trip across South Korea to mark the 25th anniversary of Kia Motors UK, we’ve arrived at one of the country’s most famous Buddhist sites for an overnight temple stay. It’s an enlightening experience to say the least. Dressed in our temple garb, we sleep on the floor of simple rooms, and all meals are eaten together with the entire fraternity. Bowls must be completely empty when returned, so we’re warned to only take what we can finish. The food is simple and fresh, and the prevailing atmosphere up here in the hills of Naejangsan National Park is one of perfect serenity. But the faithful are not entirely without worldly possessions. There are a number of cars in the temple parking lot, and one of the nuns proudly points out the yellow Kia Sorento on the end which is hers. She casts an envious glance at our shiny new Kia Niro, and soon we’re discussing cars – via a translator – with a 70-something Buddhist nun at a remote mountain temple. (She’s a particular fan of hybrids and electric cars it emerges). Bidding farewell to our wise new friends we head north on the most picturesque part of our road trip, joining the east coast of the peninsula at the start of Route 7. Korea’s answer to Route 66, this famous road is as beautiful to drive as it is to observe, snaking smoothly through rice fields, forests and mountain tunnels as golden beaches appear and reappear on the right hand side of our trusty Niro, which glides smoothly past in Cruise Control. We stop to relax on c Beach and are surprised by how much it looks and feels like California. Everything from the lifeguard uniforms to the weather and the waves shouts Santa Monica – except the loudspeaker on the truck telling everyone the beach is about to close. That definitely shouts Korean. It’s been a superbly peaceful penultimate leg to our journey, but now the bright lights of the big city are drawing us in. Tomorrow we leave the coast and head inland for the final stop on our South Korean odyssey: Seoul. *** This story is the fourth of a five part series. Sporting a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the 2017 Kia Soul Exclaim injects more performance with a total of 201 horsepower. That’s a 40-hp increase compared to the naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter engine and an even bigger increase from the Soul Base’s 1.6-liter engine that has 130 hp. And despite the increased performance, the engine still returns a 28-mpg combined rating, which is slightly better than the combined mileage of the naturally-aspirated engine. The turbocharged engine is mated to a new seven-speed dual clutch transmission, providing quicker and smoother shift points. SEE ALSO: Kia Brings 4 Slightly Crazy Self-Driving Concepts to SEMA The Exclaim model also includes specialized trim and sportier features including exclusive 18-inch wheels, red-accented body trim, chrome grille surround, unique Soul tailgate badge and for the first time on the Soul, a dual chrome twin-tip exhaust.

 12. The cornerstone of Kia’s philosophy when building automobiles is safety. Over the years, Kia has developed advanced technology to ensure that drivers and passengers are protected under all circumstances. Find out more about some of Kia’s groundbreaking safety features that protect and prepare people for any situation on the road! ▶ Read about the fundamentals of safety, brakes and airbags AHSS Kia has perfected the use of advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) to create strong and lighter body frames for vehicles. Assembled using the brand’s patented techniques, Kia’s signature body frames now play a pivotal role in crash safety as well as vehicle styling and fuel economy. In recent years, Kia has incorporated an increasing ratio of AHSS to achieve exceptional rigidity and protection. Many of the current day Kia vehicles utilize twice as much AHSS than that of the previous generation models. The hot stamping method with which the AHSS frame is put together is used to further reinforce the vulnerable areas within the passenger cabin. Hot stamping ensures that the processed steel is strengthened by up to five times its normal state. Preventative technology for peace-of-mind In addition to satisfying the requirements for crash safety, Kia has developed preventative technologies that assist with driver handling on the road. Today, every Kia vehicle is equipped with active safety systems to help drivers avoid any unforeseen trouble before it even happens. Here are a few of the key safety features that prevent accidents and assist on the road: • Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB): Identifies potential or imminent collision and reacts by automatically applying brakes to slow vehicle or bring it to a complete stop • Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS): Provides audio/visual warnings to alert drivers if they are straying out of their lan • Vehicle Stability Management (VSM): Monitors road conditions and automatically controls steering wheel and brakes to ensure stability while providing a safe and smooth ride Pedestrian Bumper System Kia cars are also equipped with safety measures to protect not just drivers but all those around in the event of an unavoidable accident. In the case of impact between pedestrian and cars, Kia has added lower stiffeners to the bumper to minimize impact on the knees and legs of the pedestrian. The system ensures that pedestrians fall onto the hood of the vehicle rather than over and under the vehicle, thereby reducing critical harm to both collision parties. And there you have it – some of Kia’s key safety features and technology that keep drivers (and everyone nearby) safe on the road. Kia’s tireless dedication to customer safety and protection has been recognized by the automobile industry and has helped us emerge among our competitors as a trustworthy and reliable brand. Stay with us as we continue to pursue our promise to deliver cars designed for ultimate safety, style and comfort. Lees hele artikel

 18. The Special Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show is always an exciting event and a great chance for brands to show off their creativity and innovation. Taking place again at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Kia brought five custom-made vehicles that envisioned the future of driving to its booth this year. For those who love challenges – Niro Triathlon Kia’s newest hybrid utility vehicle, Niro, has undergone a transformation to serve as a solid companion through the extreme and often lonely triathlon experience. A training assistant and refuge for relaxation, the Niro Triathlon is a superb combination of both comfort and top-notch training technology. A space for a small bed and bike rack was created by removing the rear roof of the Niro, allowing bikes to be locked into place for repairs and transport. Laser lights mounted at the rear provide an LED bike lane for bikers to follow behind while the Niro autonomously keeps pace ahead. The tablet attached inside the vehicle allows riders to monitor speed, time and distance druing training. In addition to these training functions, the Niro is complete with an ergonomic reclining chair and portable shower for effective relaxation. For aspiring musicians – School of Rock Sedona In partnership with School of Rock, a company dedicated to providing performance-based music education, Kia Sedona has been redesigned into a ‘gig van’ for musicians-in-training. The self-driving features of the model eliminate all possibility of human error so that parents can be assured that their children travel safely on gigs. The flashy paintjob of the Sedona makes the vehicle a sturdy and stylish mode of transportation for the young performers. Serving as a rolling recording studio, the enhancements in the Sedona include a digital mixing board, dual flat-screen monitors, speakers and ceiling-mounted boom mic. The entire cabin has been insulated with acoustic foam panels to reduce unwanted noise during recording sessions. In preparation for impromptu roadside performances, a stack of amps has also been wired within the trunk of the Sedona. For those who love winter sports – Sorento Ski Gondola Built to take on the snowy slopes and freezing climates, the Sorento Ski Gondola is a luxurious go-anywhere machine. The newly modified Sorento provides ample space to store skis, boots and other winter gear while the orange-accented power tracks carry the SUV with strength and ease onto higher ground. The silver and orange LED light bars mounted on the roof enable increased visibility in all conditions. The interior of the vehicle not only has been refurbished with orange and black leather but is also finished with waterproof treatment to protect against ice and snow. For business people on-the-go – Soul First Class Living up to its name, the Soul First Class is a relaxing mode of transportation for people who often journey to out-of-town destinations for business. Upon entry, passengers are greeted by rear facing seats with a 40-inch LED TV, computer system and premium audio speakers. 19. Kia just unveiled four new concept vehicles on the opening day of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show, all of which will be able to drive themselves. The vehicles were all built with an autonomous driving future in mind and were designed to suit the needs of various different lifestyles. They are the Nitro Triathlon, the School of Rock Sedona, the Soul First Class and the imposing Sorento Ski Gondola. The Nitro Triathlon is a custom crossover built with the tri-athlete in mind, according to Kia. It is a custom take on the original 2017 Nitro hybrid, but its roof has been removed from the D-pillars back, creating a small bed, and allows for a custom bike rack, which was fitted with a FELT tri-bike for display. It also features a tool box and tablet computer mount. One of the fancier features is the ONEU safety laser bike lane light mounted to the rear of the vehicle, which illuminates a laser LED road behind the vehicle, “and the athlete can easily monitor speed, time and distance covered via the tablet while the Nitro autonomously keeps pace.” The School of Rock Sedona is a product of Kia partnering with the School of Rock, an educational company that provides after-school music instruction to kids between the ages of 8 and 18. This Kia comes with a custom, hand-painted design as well. The most significant enhancements to this Sedona include the removal of the driver-side B-pillar, steering assembly and gear selector. According to Kia, this makes room for a digital mixing board and dual flat-screen monitors to record tracks on the go. It has front-mounted rear speakers for the tunes, and even a recording light illuminates the roof when a track is being laid down. There’s also a mic that hangs from the ceiling, and acoustic foam panels line the interior to reduce exterior noise. The Sorento Ski Gondola is a custom Sorento built by LUX Motorwerks to transport skiers up the snowy and icy slopes for another run. Instead of wheels, this Sorento has four large Dominator Rubber Tracks to help it get through the snow. It has a custom metal roof rack for supplies, skis, and any other necessities. The B-pillar has been removed for extra cargo storage space, and the rear doors are now suicide-style doors. The headlights are painted black, silver and orange, and LED light bars are present for increased visibility in blizzard-like conditions. The Soul First Class is, according to Kia, “an upscale inter-city chariot that lets business travelers work and relax as they journey to out-of-town meetings and destinations.” Also created by LUX Motorwerks, this Soul has rear-facing seats, no steering wheel and a wide array or luxury enhancements, including a 40-inch Samsung LED TV connected to a Mac mini computer, and features several speakers throughout the cabin. There’s a custom center console with two tablets that control the vehicle. The upholstery is made up of white and gray leather with diamond stitching and gray wood flooring. It also has a new blue coat of paint and modified upper and lower grilles that have LED lighting, and fancy 19-inch rims to top it off. 20. Ray Levin (left), CEO of Kia Motors South Africa, and Soon-Nam Lee (right), President of Kia Regional Headquarters for Middle East & Africa, celebrate the new world record. Powered by the all-new Kia Sportage, which was officially launched in South Africa on 21 October 2016, Kia Motors South Africa has officially set the record for the World’s Longest Test Drive Relay, announced by RecordSetter in Cape Town on Thursday, 20 October 2016. The team, together with 520 test drivers selected from more than 30,000 entries, covered a total of 3,291 km while driving through six South African provinces over a seven day period. The journey saw an array of various activities and experiences, while meeting KIA fans from all walks-of-life, visiting iconic landscapes, waterfalls, religious temples, jumping off the Bloukrans River Bridge and seeing South Africa’s most spectacular sights. “When we set off on this world record attempt, our aim was not only to showcase the all-new Sportage to as many people as possible, but to give them a tangible and memorable experience while actually driving the car,” says David Sieff, Marketing Director for Kia Motors South Africa. “The excitement levels were high throughout the journey, with great participation and many surprising moments for all involved. 23. The range of eco-friendly vehicles is growing, offering today’s consumers a larger pool to pick and choose from. Despite the continuous development of green automobile technology, many drivers are still unfamiliar with the concept of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and they are still a rarity on the roads today. Part-time electric vehicle and part-time hybrid, PHEVs may be the most ideal and functional type of current day eco-friendly cars. Equipped with an electric motor and a backup hybrid engine, PHEVs allow for pure eco-friendly electric driving while easing range anxiety – the fear that a vehicle will not possess sufficient charge or energy to reach a certain destination. In that sense, plug-in hybrids offer the best of both worlds by making up for the shortcomings of both EV cars and regular hybrid models. Optima PHEV, Kia’s very own plug-in hybrid, has been brought to life by taking our popular prize-winning midsize sedan and adding intelligent eco-friendly upgrades. With new features that give the model impressive fuel economy and extra driving convenience, the Optima PHEV is entering the spotlight and is poised to impress the growing green car demographic. Optima PHEV boasts a seamless blend of efficient electric and internal combustion power. The model can now travel up to 54 km in electric mode and 926 km in hybrid mode (internal estimates) when the battery runs out of charge. The reduced running costs and environmental impact compared to gasoline and other low-emission competitors make Optima PHEV a leader in its segment. Our PHEV may deliver a silent ride but it is definitely not without power. The upgraded hybrid powertrain, 6-speed transmission and battery system work together to offer a consistently high level of efficiency and power, minimizing energy transfer and conversion losses. With these internal enhancements, the Optima PHEV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.4 seconds, 0.6 seconds faster than the previous generation Optima hybrid. While recognizable as a member of the Optima family, the plug-in model also features some PHEV-exclusive additions to further increase functionality. The new supervision cluster reflects the innovative nature of the car by displaying key information such as driving modes, battery state of charge and details of driving style with clear and refined graphics. Optima PHEV also possesses distinguishing exterior details, with blue tinted LED headlights, light chrome accents and a new aerodynamic rear bumper completing its body. With new state-of-the-art green technology, Optima PHEV is an extremely compelling choice for consumers looking for a new low-emissions car. 25. The 2016 Consumer Reports Annual Auto Reliability Survey has been released and there are a few surprises. Designed to rank automakers based on the predicted reliability of their product lines, the annual survey gathers data from over 500,000 Consumer Reports subscribers that bought or leased a new vehicle between model year 2000 and 2017. This year’s survey includes more than 300 individual nameplates. SEE ALSO: FCA, Honda Civic Struggle in Reliability Survey There are some familiar faces in the top 10 most reliable car brands, while others are new to the list. 10. Honda Honda stumbled a bit this year, dropping two spots to 10th place with an average reliability score of 57 across seven models. Honda owners told the publication they have been stymied by problematic infotainment systems and transmissions. But perhaps the biggest surprise of all is that the Honda Civic is no longer recommended by Consumer Reports. 9. BMW BMW rose two spots to ninth place, with the same average reliability score as Honda at 57. The German automaker, however, had eight models as part of the survey with the i3 and X5 newly recommended, meaning they’re models with improved reliability. 8. Infiniti Nissan’s luxury arm, Infiniti, was most improved rising 16 spots to eighth place. Four models were taken into consideration to give the brand an average reliability score of 62. The publication notes that Infiniti is a bit of a mixed bag, however, with the Q70 sedan scoring 91, but the QX60 getting a score of 33. 7. Hyundai Korean automaker Hyundai saw the Santa Fe join the newly recommended list, helping the brand move up two spots to seventh place. Hyundai had seven models as part of the survey, averaging a reliability score of 66. 6. Mazda With an average reliability score of 68, Mazda dropped two spots to sixth place with five models surveyed. The Japanese automaker didn’t have any vehicles that joined the no longer recommended list, nor did it have any newly recommended models. 5. Kia Kia may be the more affordable of the two Korean automakers on the list, but Hyundai’s sister brand fared better in the annual reliability survey. “Kia builds cars that are slightly better than Hyundai,” said Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports‘ director of automotive testing. It’s likely due to the fact that Kia introduces models a bit later than Hyundai, once many initial bugs have been addressed. The company rose one spot to fifth place, with four models surveyed netting an average reliability score of 69. 4. Audi Audi dropped one spot to fourth place, with seven models averaging a reliability score of 71. Both the Q3 and Q7 models have proven to be reliable, but the A3 ranked below average, making it no longer recommended by the publication. 3. Buick Buick moves into the top three brands this year, with its core product line mature and most problems having been ironed out. The American automaker has introduced several new vehicles, however, which could have an impact on future brand performance. For this year, it rose four spots with four models averaging a reliability score of 75. 2. Toyota To little surprise, Toyota is in the top two this year, with 12 models averaging a reliability score of 78. Despite high marks throughout, Toyota was hindered by the redesigned Tacoma, which was unreliable in its first year. The Japanese automaker continues to use tried-and-true methods to build its vehicles, taking a conservative, evolutionary approach. 1. Lexus Topping the list as the most reliable car brand this year is Lexus, scoring 86 with nine models surveyed. Both Toyota and Lexus have been consistently reliable throughout the years of the annual survey.
