[See image gallery at www.autoguide.com] The Kia Forte is receiving a mid-cycle refresh this year, gaining a new engine and technology. Adorning the same look and “tiger nose” grille featured on Optima, the 2017 Forte sedan is now powered by a 2.0-liter engine that replaces the previous 1.8-liter unit. Standard is will be a six-speed manual transmission with a second-generation six-speed automatic transmission optional. The EX trim is still equipped with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder and six-speed automatic. Also new for 2017 is what Kia calls a sporty S trim. It features an exclusive interior, a sport-tuned suspension, 16-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, rear spoiler and a chrome exhaust tip. Ramping up the safety factor of the new Forte are options like autonomous emergency braking, front collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind spot monitor and more. And like most new cars, the Forte can be had with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The 2017 Forte5 also receives the same overhaul this year and the SX can still be had with a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine – now available with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Forte Koup does not receive the refresh as of yet and both power ratings and fuel economy figures for the sedan and hatchback will be released closer to launch. The 2017 Forte also marks the launch of Kia’s second North American vehicle plant in Monterrey, Mexico. It was a large, body-on-frame SUV that was only offered in the U.S. for a couple years. Despite its market failure, Kia may be developing a new full-size crossover. Making its world debut at the Detroit Auto Show, the brand’s Telluride concept previews what a future production model might look like. It features three rows of seats, rear-hinged back doors and room for up to seven passengers. Styling is upright and strong, reminding me of a mashup between Volvo’s new XC90 and a Ford Flex. The Telluride is built on a modified version of the Kia Sorento’s architecture. Overall, this design study is appreciably larger than the vehicle on which it’s based. Complete 2016 North American International Auto Show Coverage Compared to the Sorento, it’s almost 10 inches longer, nearly 5 inches wider, more than 4 inches taller and rolls on a wheelbase that’s been stretched by nearly a foot! No doubt about it, this is a sizeable crossover. Painted a striking hue called Dark Pyrite Green, the Telluride looks suitably aggressive. Its 22-inch wheels further enhance this appearance. Inside, it features an expansive and technology-packed cabin. First and second-row passengers travel in cushy comfort, thanks to its captain’s chairs. The aft pair of these seats bring to mind a first-class airline experience, reclining nearly flat. Further caring for its precious cargo, these four buckets feature an array of health sensors that monitor passengers’ wellbeing. Information about this is displayed on door panel-mounted screens and are tied to a large, ceiling-mounted LED panel, which can display therapeutic light patterns to improve mood or help fight jetlag. A finger-print activated push-button start is included and seems like a legitimate feature. This switch fires up the concept’s 3.5-liter direct-injected V6. Paired with an electric motor, this transversely mounted powertrain put out a total of 400 horses and should deliver more than 30 miles per gallon on the highway. All-wheel drive is standard. The Kia Telluride concept looks great, offers a number of intriguing features that seem ready for primetime and is based on an existing vehicle architecture. The company may claim there are no plans to bring this model to market, but we’d bet they’re hard at work on a production version. Kia will introduce the Telluride SUV Concept at next week’s Detroit Auto Show and the brand has now released a picture of its interior. The large SUV takes its name from the Colorado town known for its ski resorts and gorgeous mountains, a name likely given to represent the rugged and boxy look of the Telluride. Kia says that this concept will be the first vehicle from the brand to use 3-D printed components. Kia claims that the new SUV will be packed full of technology and luxury along with some type of in-cabin health-and-wellness system. Caught testing by AutoGuide.com‘s spy photographers, the refreshed Kia Soul will likely get new headlights and a new front bumper while the back of the car will receive similar changes with redesigned tail lights and rear bumper. It appears that the fake air outlets currently found on the front fenders has been removed for a cleaner look and the side mirrors are growing slightly in size. Expect the facelift to also update the Soul’s interior with a new infotainment system. Kia has announced that it will debut an all-new concept SUV at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. Kia is announcing a flurry of high-tech news at the consumer electronics show, but we’ll start with the big one: the automaker has been given a grant by the state of Nevada to test it autonomous Kia Soul EV on public roads. This Soul EV is acting as the brand’s testbed for the development of next-generation technologies and will set off to the roads around Death Valley. This is all part of a plan that involves getting a self-driving car to market by 2030. But what will the company offer until that self driving car that’s 14 years away? That’s where the new Drive Wise sub brand that was announced today comes into play. Drive Wise is Kia’s name for its advanced driver assistance systems, or semi-autonomous features. Kia’s future technologies on display at CES 2016 include Highway Autonomous Driving, Urban Autonomous Driving, Preceding Vehicle Following, Emergency Stop System, Traffic Jam Assist and a new Autonomous Parking & Out function. Here’s a quick break down: The Highway Autonomous Driving system will keep the car in its lane, and can even safely change lanes and pass slower vehicles without driver input. The Urban Autonomous Driving will keep the car in its lane and the vehicle will react to real-time traffic updates. The Preceding Vehicle Following system is an enhanced lane-keep feature that can monitor the vehicle in front of the car and allows it to calculate its own path relative to it, making for safe following distances if the lane markings are covered due to weather conditions or road layout. The Emergency Stop System uses face tracking to determine if the driver is paying attention and can direct the car to a safe shoulder in an emergency. The Traffic Jam Assist is like cruise control for traffic, meaning the car will stop and move in the proper flow of traffic. Lastly the Autonomous Parking In and Out a self-valet that can let you get out of the car while it parks its self remotely. Kia finally showed off its future cockpit, with a new infotainment display that allows for gesture controls and can even recognize the driver based on their smartphone or smart watch. The korean automaker hopes to have all these semi autonomous features in a production car by 2020. Set to debut later this year, the new Kia Rio will receive a new body that looks rather different than the current model. Although the spy photos show a heavily camouflaged prototype, we do see LED daytime running lights that helps give the new Rio a more distinct appearance. Unfortunately, the camouflage does do a very good job keeping the new design of the Rio hidden, but that is expected, considering this is the first time spy photographers have caught it testing. The current Kia Rio received a facelift in 2014 and was recently named the overall car owners regret buying the most according to Consumer Reports‘ annual owner satisfaction survey. Only 40 percent of current Kia Rio owners said they would purchase the vehicle again and the compact was the least satisfying car overall in the latest survey. Hopefully the Korean automaker can improve the Rio enough to stay away from getting that award again.
