First shown at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show as the Kia Sportspace concept, the Korean automaker confirmed shortly after that the model would be heading to production as an Optima wagon. It’s still unclear whether Kia has plans to bring the Optima Sportswagon to the U.S., but it’s unlikely since North American consumers generally prefer crossovers and wagon sales haven’t exactly excelled in recent years. SEE ALSO: Kia Optima Wagon Headed to Production Kia however will look to capitalize on the European market with the new offering and AutoGuide.com‘s spy photographers noted that the automaker has been benchmarking the Kia Optima Sportswagon against the Volkswagen Passat and Ford Mondeo (Fusion) wagon models. Expect it to share its powertrain with the existing Optima sedan along with a plug-in hybrid variant. Compared to the concept, it appears that Kia has toned down the styling just a notch, with the front end taken from the European-spec Optima. The 2017 Kia Sportage has arrived in the U.S., making its debut at the 2015 L.A. Auto Show. Entering its fourth generation, the Kia Sportage is the Korean automaker’s longest-running nameplate and the latest model improves in all categories. Compared to its predecessor, the overall length of the crossover has been increased 1.6 inches to 176.4 inches, while it rides on a wheelbase that has been stretched 1.2 inches to 105.1 inches. As a result, interior dimensions have grown to provide more space and comfort for passengers with headroom increasing 0.2 inches to 39.3 inches in the front and 0.6 inches to 39.1 inches in the rear. Legroom has improved slightly in front while the rear gets a more generous 0.3 inches to 38.2 inches. Cargo capacity also sees a jump from 26.1 cubic feet to 30.7 cubic feet thanks to an innovative dual-level cargo floor and a widened luggage area. The Sportage LX and EX models will be powered by a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter engine with 181 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque, while the SX Turbo boasts a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mill with 241 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. All models will be offered in front- or all-wheel drive, both coupled to a six-speed Sportmatic transmission. The all-new Sportage will also be the first Kia model to offer the latest version of the company’s telematics and infotainment system, UVO3, complete with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and UVO eServices with 14 telematics services. “Simply put, the Sportage is a breed apart in the compact CUV segment,” said Orth Hedrick, vice president, product planning KMA. “Instead of bland utility, the Sportage combines distinctly European and sporty styling with thoughtful design and functionality, including innovative packaging, premium materials, a turbocharged engine and surprising features. The Korean automaker has announced its plans to equip the new Optima range with more fuel-efficient hybrid models, including a plug-in variant with the ability to travel up to 27 miles on electric power alone. The next-generation Optima PHEV will feature a 9.8-kWh lithium-polymer battery pack that has roughly six times the energy output of what’s currently in the Optima Hybrid. Paired to a 50-kW electric motor that is 42 percent more powerful than the previous Optima hybrid, the plug-in hybrid powertrain will also feature a 2.0-liter four-cylinder GDI engine with 154 horsepower and 139 pound-feet of torque. Combined system output is expected to be around 202 hp. SEE ALSO: 2016 Kia Optima Review Based on internal testing conducted by Kia, the Optima PHEV is expected to deliver a 99-MPGe combined rating in the U.S. with engineers targeting a 40-mpg combined rating in charge-sustaining mode. Like other plug-in hybrid models available today, the Kia Optima PHEV will have styling changes to differentiate it from the rest of the Optima lineup. Those aesthetic changes include a charging port on the driver-side front panel, chrome side sill moldings, new wheel designs and “EcoPlug-In” badging. Inside, the model will have a distinctive instrument cluster, and a charge indicator on the top of the dash that allows drivers to easily see the state of charge from outside the vehicle. In announcing the Kia Optima Plug-in Hybrid, the Korean automaker also revealed that the upcoming new Optima Hybrid will see a boost in fuel economy by 10 percent. Kia also plans on improving average fuel efficiency of its models by 25 percent compared to 2014 by 2020. Kia is hard at work on self-driving car technology, some of which will be introduced into its cars by 2020. The Korean brand is targeting 2030 for its fully self-driving vehicle which is currently under development. The brand will begin by introducing semi-autonomous systems in the Sportage, Optima and Sorento which will handle some of the driving by the year 2020. The Niro, which Kia calls a Hybrid Utility Vehicle (HUV), will make its production debut sometime in early 2016. It will share its platform and running gear with the new Hyundai Ioniq, both of which will be fighting to take away some market share from the Toyota Prius. SEE ALSO: Hyundai Ioniq Named as Prius-Fighter Under the hood, the Niro and Ioniq are both expected to use a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, mated to a 32 kW electric motor powered by lithium-polymer batteries. A six-speed dual-clutch transmission is likely to send that power to the front wheels. All-wheel drive is expected to be offered as an option sometime after launch. The Kia Niro will fit in between the Sportage and Soul in terms of size. Rumor has it that this Kia hybrid will be coming to the U.S., and is likely to make its debut at the either the 2016 Detroit or Chicago auto show.
