Hyundai-Kia Developing Wireless Charging for EVs
Kiaclub Nieuwsrobot plaatste een topic in Kianieuws van Autoguide.com
Hyundai–Kia is developing a system to allow its EV to charge wirelessly. The Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center along with wireless power company Mojo Mobility, Inc., have been awarded a grant from the Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies program to research and develop a wireless charging system. Mojo Mobility has already done research in this field and is known for its wireless charging systems, capable of transferring high power without the need for a physical connection. The companies will work together to implement such a system using the Kia Soul EV. SEE ALSO: Kia Soul EV Heading to Five New States The project consists of three phases. The first phase consisted of developing the wireless power transfer system, which operates with 85 percent grid-to-vehicle efficiency. It is capable of sending in excess of 10 kW to the vehicle during fast charging. The system also allows misalignment between the car and charger, making it easier for day-to-day use. The second phase saw the two companies integrate the system to the Soul EV. It has demonstrated full operation at 92 percent efficiency. The third and final stage will involve real-world performance data gathering, which will test the systems’ durability, interoperability, safety, and performance. Kia did not offer a timeline for when we can expect a wireless charging system to be available to the public. [Industry Week] Talking Connected Cars with Kia’s CTO
Kiaclub Nieuwsrobot plaatste een topic in Kia Buzz
The head of Connected Car and chief technology officer for Kia North America, Henry Bzeih has a tall order to fill–making vehicle technology work in a way that’s safe, contains costs, is convenient, and has just enough pizzazz that consumers actually look forward to their slog to work. “The vehicle today has more lines of code from a software perspective than the F-22 Raptor, more lines of code than the Discovery shuttle. People don’t realize what’s involved in bringing that to the road.” – Henry Bzeih Click to read more Lees hele artikel -
‘Gear Up’ your life with Kia’s new global brand campaign
Kiaclub Nieuwsrobot plaatste een topic in Kia Buzz
Remember your first drive? Your heart pounding, your eyes wide with excitement. It is with the same feeling that Kia is offering support to young new drivers who are just getting started with our new global brand campaign “Gear Up.” The Gear Up campaign is Kia’s second Re:Design Project, following last year’s “Father and Son’s Road Trip” campaign. The Re:Design project embodies Kia’s goal of moving beyond visual presentation and car design in the hopes of becoming more a part of our fans’ lives. For the Gear Up campaign, 13 young drivers from 11 countries gathered in Barcelona, Spain last May to gain confidence behind the wheel and in their everyday lives. The Gear Up Campaign is composed of three programs. The ‘Challenge Course’ lets drivers experience a racing circuit, the ‘Joy Course’ shows them the joy of driving the beautiful roads of Barcelona, and the ‘Life Talk’ offers an opportunity to learn from the best mentors of today’s era. On the first day, the 13 participants drove the ‘Challenge Course’ racing circuit, experiencing the speed and the thrill of driving. They got to wear racing suits and drive on the heavy rain course, the slalom course, and the speed racing course. On the next day, all participants got a chance to drive through the beautiful streets of Barcelona along the Joy Course. They visited some of Barcelona’s most famous sites. Not only were they able to drive, but they were also able to surf the waves of a beautiful beach in Barcelona or golf at one of Barcelona’s magnificent golf courses. Over the course of the day, the participants started building confidence in their driving and in themselves. On the final day, at the Life Talk, two special guests met with the participants as mentors. Manfred Stohl, an Austrian racer with more than 200 rallies under his belt, offered inspiration to the young participants. “Just as you overcame the fear of driving, life is no different. You just have to go for it,” he said. The second speaker was the CEO of SuperJam, Fraser Doherty, who had this to say, “Miracles happen if you always push forward. Keep up your courage and reach for your dreams.” QuiZhuo Chao, a participant sponsored by Kia Motors China, used to be a dancer. He loved how dancing gave him confidence and energy. Unfortunately, QuiZhou was in a serious car accident in 2005 which caused him to lose confidence in driving. Determined to overcome this fear, QuiZhou participated in the Gear Up campaign and in no time he was driving the streets of Barcelona with confidence! With the Gear Up campaign, we hope to inspire youth around the world to gain confidence in their lives. There is a splendid journey awaiting, so just go for it! Kia Gwangju plant named the best quality plant in Asia by J.D. Power
Kiaclub Nieuwsrobot plaatste een topic in Kia Buzz
Kia Motors brought home more great recognition from J.D. Power & Associates in addition to its runner-up result in Initial Quality Study with Kia’s Gwangju Plant 1 being crowned with the Gold Plant Quality Award in the Asia Pacific region, which is assessed based on the number of defects and malfunctions found in the produced vehicles. Located in one of the biggest cities in Korea, Kia Gwangju Plant 1 has an annual production capacity of 175,000 and is home to the Kia Soul, its Soul EV electric counterpart and the all-new Carens. Every finished product at Gwanju Plant 1 goes through 19 tests – three rounds of testing to the auto body, two in painting, seven in assembly, and seven rounds of final quality tests. Furthermore, one vehicle is selected randomly each day for additional testing to ensure consistent quality. According to Kim Seung-cheol, manager of Gwangju Plant 1, the secret behind the best quality plant in Asia lies in its prompt handling of customer complaints. With a winning streak in product and plant quality, Kia will continue striving to ensure better quality, design, and customer satisfaction. Lees hele artikel -

Meet the enhanced Kia cee’d: More polished and powerful!
Kiaclub Nieuwsrobot plaatste een topic in Kia Buzz
The enhanced Kia cee’d and pro_cee’d lines, set to go on sale from July 2015 all across Europe, have received a comprehensive upgrade, inside and out. The enhanced Kia cee’d line, including the five-door hatchback, cee’d SW and pro_cee’d, now come with elevated styling, more powerful engines, and more convenient features. Modifications have also been applied to the high-powered cee’d GT and pro_cee’d GT models, while the new ‘GT Line’ specification will provide all of the dynamics of the GT models and the versatility of the conventional cee’d model at the same time. The enhanced Kia cee’d The enhanced Kia pro_cee’d More stylish and modern design The exterior and interior tweaks apply to all models in the lineup with a focus on creating a more modern look. While Kia’s signature ‘tiger-nosed’ grille remains, a more angular and wider bumper with chrome trim around the fog lamps provides a refreshed front look. The rear end features a reshaped bumper, reflectors and rear LED lamps. A number of improvements have also been made to interior, including styling updates such as chrome accents and the addition of a color package, as well as the improved NVH with added sound-deadening materials in the floor mats and ventilation system. Enhanced powertrains and seven-speed double-clutch transmission 1.0 litre T-GDI engine The most significant changes can be found under the hood, as the enhanced cee’d line gets a new, highly efficient 1.0-liter T-GDI 3-cylinder turbocharged engine for the first time in Europe. The three-cylinder power unit has been downsized to make room for improvements in fuel consumption and emissions, producing 100 ps or 120 ps, depending on the power output, and 172 Nm torque. As a result, the new cee’d family will come with a wider choice of powertrains, with all engines compliant with Euro 6 admission standards. Another major technology debut is the introduction of the new seven-speed double-clutch transmission (DCT), available on higher powered models with 136 ps 1.6-liter CRDi diesel engine. With a higher capacity, Kia’s new DCT can handle the higher torque outputs of the modified engine, while boasting lower fuel consumption. It offers a sporty driving feel when in manual mode and an elevated level of comfort and smoothness when left in automatic mode. Seven-speed double-clutch transmission (DCT) Improved features to ensure maximum safety and comfort Kia engineers have also made multiple upgrades to improve the driving experience of our customers. The minimized NVH of the new model comes from the addition of a new torque vectoring system, the motor-driven power steering system, and new stoppers on the rear strut mount insulators. As for safety, an optional Speed Limit Information Function (SLIF), which uses a camera to identify speed limit signs on the road and notifies the driver of the speed limit on the dashboard and speedometer, has been added. Blind Spot Detection (BSD) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) are also available. Check out more photos of the new Kia cee’d family below. “Pay twice as much and you won’t get better design. Neighbors shouted from across the street, “Whoa, fancy car!” One morning in a neighborhood littered with Lexus and Mercedes, a robe-clad woman burst out of her house determined to find out what the “beautiful car was.” If she test-drives a Sorento, she will find a very comfortable and quiet vehicle with room for five passengers (a third row is available on V6 models). 10 Best Car Brands in Initial Quality
Kiaclub Nieuwsrobot plaatste een topic in Kianieuws van Autoguide.com
If you’re in the market for a car that won’t have any major issues after you purchase it, you’ve come to the right place. Each year, J.D. Power conducts the U.S. Initial Quality Study, which examines problems experienced by vehicle owners during the first 90 days of ownership. Based on the study’s results, each automaker receives an initial quality rating that is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles — the fewer problems an automaker has, the better its quality. SEE ALSO: 10 Worst Car Brands in Initial Quality This year, the industry average was 112 problems per 100 vehicles with 15 automakers besting the average and 18 automakers scoring below the average. 10. Toyota It’s almost no surprise to see Toyota in the top 10, given its reputation for reliability and dependability. The Japanese automaker saw its owners reporting 104 problems per 100 vehicles, with the Toyota Corolla named one of the top three models in the Compact Car segment. The Camry was also one of the top three models in the Midsize Car segment, giving two of Toyota’s most popular models awards for this year’s J.D. Power Initial Quality Study. Other models that were named best-in-class is the Toyota Tacoma (Midsize Pickup) and the Toyota Sequoia (Large SUV). The brand had its owners report one less problem per 100 vehicles compared to the 2014 study, but Toyota lost ranking, as it finished in fifth place in 2014. 9. Lexus Toyota’s luxury arm, Lexus, finished ninth this year, a drop from its third place finish in 2014. Last year, Lexus owners reported 92 problems per 100 vehicles, but this year wasn’t as friendly to new Lexus owners. In the 2015 J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study, Lexus had 104 problems per 100 vehicles. Regardless, it’s an acceptable amount below the industry average and one of four Japanese automakers to be under the industry average. The Lexus LS was ranked the highest in the Large Premium Car category, while the Lexus ES was third in the Compact Premium Car category. Also getting an award is the new Lexus NX, which tied for third in the Compact Premium SUV segment. 8. Lincoln With 103 reported problems per 100 vehicles, Lincoln slides in with an eighth place finish, the second highest of all American automakers. The Lincoln MKZ was the second top model in the Compact Premium Car category and the Lincoln MKS also earned a second place finish in the Midsize Premium Car category. Last year, the luxury automaker finished in 10th place with 109 reported problems per 100 vehicles. In addition, the Lincoln Navigator saw a third place finish in the Large Premium SUV category, while the MKX was second best in Midsize Premium SUV. 7. Chevrolet The top American automaker in the 2015 U.S. Initial Quality Study is Chevrolet, with 101 problems per 100 vehicles. Earning accolades for the brand are the Chevrolet Spark in the City Car category and the Chevrolet Camaro in the Midsize Sport Car segment. The Chevrolet Sonic was also ranked third in the Small Car category along with the Chevrolet Impala in Large Car. The American automaker has stayed consistent, finishing sixth last year with 106 problems per 100 vehicles. The Chevrolet Tahoe also got a nod as the third best Large SUV and the Traverse made its presence known in the Midsize SUV category with a third-place finish. Topping the list in the Compact SUV segment is the Chevrolet Equinox, and the Silverado LD was also named best Large Light Duty Pickup. The Chevrolet Silverado HD finished second behind the Ford Super Duty in the Large Heavy Duty Pickup segment. 6. BMW Besting main competitors Audi and Mercedes-Benz, BMW finished in sixth place this year with 99 problems per 100 vehicles. It’s a noticeable improvement for the German automaker, which had its owners report 108 problems per 100 vehicles last year, landing BMW in eighth place. This year, BMW was bolstered by the 4 Series and 5 Series models with both of them topping the Compact Premium Car and Midsize Premium Car categories, respectively. The BMW 7 Series was also second in the Large Premium Car segment. Even the 2 Series got some action, being named the top model in the Small Premium Car category. 5. Infiniti The top Japanese automaker on this year’s J.D. Power Initial Quality Study is Infiniti, with 97 reported problems per 100 vehicles. It’s a significant improvement compared to the brand last year, which saw its owners reporting 128 problems per 100 vehicles, which was well off the industry average of 116 in 2014. In fact, Infiniti was the 10th worst automaker in the 2014 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study. Helping bolster the brand in this year’s study is the Infiniti Q70, which was the third top model in the Midsize Premium Car segment. The company’s SUV and crossover offerings also made a mark this year, with the QX50 in a tie for third place in the Compact Premium SUV segment. It had no competition in the Midsize Premium SUV and Large Premium SUV categories, earning best nods in both those segments with the Infiniti QX70 and QX80, respectively. 4. Hyundai Hyundai stayed steady in fourth place, earning an Initial Quality of 95, similar to last year’s 94. The Korean automaker also walked away with an award with the Hyundai Accent being named top car in the Small Car segment. The Hyundai Elantra also tied in second place in the Compact Car category. Other models that came away with awards include the Hyundai Tucson, which topped the Small SUV category, and the Hyundai Santa Fe, which was named second best in the Midsize SUV segment. 3. Jaguar Although Jaguar only had one model taking home an award with the Jaguar F-Type in the Midsize Premium Sporty Car segment (3rd place), the British automaker kicks off the top 3 brands in Initial Quality with 93 problems per 100 vehicles. Last year, Jaguar finished in second position with 87 problems per 100 vehicles, so its quality did decrease compared to the 2014 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study. Still, its ranking is significantly under the industry average of 112 problems per 100 vehicles. 2. Kia Perhaps a surprise to some, Kia finished second in the 2015 J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study with 86 problems per 100 vehicles, while its Kwangju Plant 1, which produces the Kia Soul, received the Gold Plant Quality Award for the Asia Pacific region. The Korean automaker had numerous models ranking in the top three for their segment, including the Kia Rio (2nd, Small Car), Kia Cadenza (2nd, Large Car) and the Kia Optima (2nd, Midsize Car). Even the Kia Sportage (tied 2nd) and the Kia Sedona (3rd) left with awards in the Small SUV and Minivan categories, respectively. 1. Porsche Similar to how Fiat is enjoying another year at the very bottom of the list, Porsche will be the automaker to beat when it comes to Initial Quality. With 80 problems per 100 vehicles, Porsche actually saw more issues than last year when it scored 74, but the change wasn’t enough to knock it off the throne. The Porsche Boxster was named top model in the Compact Premium Sporty Car segment while the Porsche Panamera finished third in the Large Premium Car category. Also making an appearance on the awards list is the Porsche Cayenne, which came in third in the Midsize Premium SUV segment. The car design process: Making of the Kia Sportspace
Kiaclub Nieuwsrobot plaatste een topic in Kia Buzz
Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show 2015, the Kia Sportspace concept, with its striking wagon silhouette and powerful performance, has definitely been talk of the town. Designed under the leadership of Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer Europe, the Sportspace was developed in Kia’s Frankfurt design studio. Today, we have prepared a quick tour for you to see the remarkable work of Guillaume and his team and the whole car design process at Kia Motors. Planning Just like all great masterpieces, Kia concept designs start with an imagination. The Sportspace came to life out of the ambition Guillaume developed when he was still studying design in Switzerland. On his key inspiration for the design, Guillaume explained, “I always had this picture in my mind of creating a vehicle that I could have used to go skiing for the weekend with friends before driving back for it to be displayed at the Geneva Salon.” Gregory Guillaume Sketching & rendering Determined to create a versatile vehicle, Kia’s Chief Designer of the Europe design studio started sketching out the car of his dreams. Even from the early stage of design, the Sportspace featured an architectural outline that was at once distinct and sophisticated. Once the sketching was done, the next step involved digital rendering, adding shading, color and lamination to a 2-D image in order to mold the ideas into a more life-like image. 1:1 scale clay model development As their ideas solidified, Kia’s design team entered the next phase of car design: clay modeling. Automobile prototypes made of clay still play important role in today’s digital age; they accurately reflect the full-size physical model with refined changes down to a few millimeters. “The visual weight of the rear is reduced with the careful shaping of screen, door, and rear bumper. The edges cut into the mass to make its raked appearance believable and less wagon-like,” explained Guillaume. Building Bringing a piece of inspiration to life takes a lot of effort, but with strong teamwork, the design phase gradually nears an end. After rigorously building each part based on the final design, what emerges is a bold front look — powerful satin aluminum strip and ice-cube LED headlights — and a luxurious interior composed of carbon fiber and milled and anodized aluminum. As a finishing touch, the car is equipped with 20-inch ten-spoke alloy wheels. Hungry for more sneak peeks? Here are a few more photos from the Kia Motors Europe design center. kia_sportspace_building ◄ Back Next ► Picture 1 of 8 Lees hele artikel -
Kia climbs to #2 in 2015 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study
Kiaclub Nieuwsrobot plaatste een topic in Kia Buzz
We are thrilled to announce that Kia Motors ranked second among 33 automotive brands in J.D. Power’s 2015 Initial Quality Study (IQS). Only Porsche, a premium brand, outranked Kia, meaning that Kia is now ranked #1 among mass market brands. Now in its 29th year, the annual J.D. Power IQS measures the quality of vehicles based on the number of problems reported by vehicle owners within the first 90 days. This is by far the finest performance Kia has achieved in this study to date. Honored were the Kia Soul and Sorento, which received the highest scores in the compact multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and midsize SUV segments, while the Rio, Optima, Cadenza, Sportage and Sedona (Grand Carnival) ranked among the top three in their respective categories. “We believe the J.D. Power report leaves no doubt that Kia builds world-class vehicles, and the results are especially gratifying as the IQS study truly reflects the voice of our customers,” said Michael Sprague, Chief Operating Officer and EVP, Kia Motors America. “Kia’s rise is one of the industry’s greatest success stories and is driven by the hard work of thousands of team members around the world, as well as our long-term strategy to concentrate on quality, strengthen the brand and elevate the ownership experience.” See the chart below for the full J.D. Power 2015 IQS rankings. Lees hele artikel
