It all happened at the production facility based in Žilina, Slovakia, Kia’s one and only manufacturing plant in Europe that produces the various models for European customers, including the cee’d family, Sportage and Venga. And which car model rolled off Kia’s European production line for the 2 miilionth time? The Kia pro_cee’d GT, our high-performance hatchback model, in metallic Deluxe White shade! The Žilina facility in Slovakia accounts for over 56 percent of Kia’s total European sales. Both the 2 millionth car itself and its powerful 204 ps 1.6-liter T-GDI engine were produced here, and will be shipped to the lucky buyer in Belgium later this month. Michael Cole, Chief Operating Officer of Kia Motors Europe, pointed out the significance of this production milestone, “Since we began production in 2006, the output of our Slovakian facility has grown consistently. Just last week, we finally took the wraps off the next generation Optima, a game-changing midsize sedan, at the New York International Auto Show and the Seoul Motor Show. To continue commanding worldwide attention, Kia designers sought to evolve the previous model into an innovative and modern vehicle. The all-new Optima still carries the signature personality of its predecessor, while surprising us with a number of enhancements inside and out. Discover more about the design inspirations and evolution of the all-new Optima through an interview with the Kia Design Team below. Q: What’s the design concept of the new Optima? A: In the early stage of development, Kia designers from South Korea, the US and Europe encapsulated the whole design concept into three keywords: advanced, modern and dynamic. We strived to create a vehicle with details that reached an unprecedented level of transformation and to build upon the overall sporty and active image of the Optima. We are proud to say that the next generation Optima has been fully transformed to exceed everyone’s expectations. Q: What was the source of your design inspiration? A: Various objects and experiences are all sources of inspiration, from architecture to fashion trends to cutting-edge aircraft and sci-fi movies. But if we had to single one out, the most influential image for the all-new Optima’s design was a photo of an eagle spreading its wings, energetic and determined to soar. The overall exterior design was refined to embody this concept. What has changed and how did you reach such level of improvements? A: Compared to the previous Optima, the all-new Optima’s front bumper is more stylish and wider by de-emphasizing border lines between the radiator grille and front chrome headlamps. The Optima’s signature front bumper styling merges with the grille and headlamps to deliver an even sleeker look. We also focused on creating a fastback silhouette by extending the DLO (day light opening) to the rear. The all-new Optima ‘Modern Style’ (left) and the ‘Sporty Style’ (right) Q: There are two types of exterior designs put into production for the all-new Optima. What are the key features of the variants and reasons behind offering two the different types? A: In addition to the ‘Modern Style’ of the LX and EX trim levels, we introduced the ‘Sporty Style’ available on the SX and SXL trims which feature a more aggressive look to satisfy various customer preferences. The ‘Modern Style’ is equipped with a boldly designed radiator grille and front bumper to project an aggressive, dynamic image. The ‘Sporty Design,’ while sharing the core design identity with the ‘Modern Style,’ reflects active lifestyles, which is highlighted by the side air intakes and muscular detail of the front bumper. The all-new Optima SXL interior Q: Were there any specific changes to the interior design? A: Inspired by haute-couture trends in fashion, the interior design was upgraded to deliver a more luxurious and clean image by moving the display zone to the top and the control buttons below. With a stronger horizontal plane and a wider center console, drivers will get a greater sense of space. Q: How about the color variations? Will there be any new colors? A: In order to strengthen the all-new Optima’s modern and futuristic image, paint colors made with advanced aluminum pigment and inspired by outer space have been added. The new color shades include Pluto Brown, Gravity Blue and Moss Grey. Gravity blue, in particular, was inspired by the recent blockbuster movie, “Gravity,” and expresses a dark blue hue with a hint of metallic pigment. Kia’s Sportspace concept won’t evolve into a station wagon version of the new Optima that debuted in New York last week. “We looked at it. It’s a beautiful car and obviously it’s a big deal in Europe mainly because they love estates over there,” Kia Motors America product planning vice president Orth Hendricks said. The company hinted at the possibility of an estate version of the Optima last March when it showcased the Sportspace concept in Switzerland. “What we found is that [an Optima wagon customer] is right on top of our Sorento buyer.” The Optima is Kia’s best-selling product in the U.S. where last year the company reported 159,020 sales compared to the Sorento, which was its third-best seller last year at 102,520 units. Combined, they accounted for 45 percent of Kia’s U.S. sales in 2014. A wagon version of the Optima might serve to elevate Kia’s profile in the European auto market, but that won’t be enough to justify the business case. “We looked at the volume and we looked at the number of people that would choose it and what it would cost,” he said. But bridging the gap from show concept to series production of a salable product would be expensive. Kia builds Optimas for this market and globally at its West point, Ga. plant. “It would be a whole other set of tooling to bring all that stuff in,” Hendricks said. So for now, the possibility of an Optima station wagon will remain firmly in conceptual territory. The world premiere of the all-new Optima at the New York International Auto Show just got wrapped up, but Kia continues to bring surprises wherever it goes. This time, we are back on our home turf for the Seoul Motor Show where we unveiled the Kia Novo concept for the very first time. Featuring coupé-inspired styling and a minimalist, driver-focused cabin, the Kia Novo’s bold looks captivated the huge crowd gathered to see the latest from Kia. The all-new Optima, also known as ‘K5’ in the Korean market, was also at the center of attention after a special presentation given by Kia President and Chief Designer Peter Schreyer. Novo concept: A fresh hint at Kia’s promising future The name of the new concept speaks to the core characters of the car itself, for it was taken from the Latin word ‘novatus,’ meaning renewed or refreshed. The Novo concept was designed to create a driving environment based on a specially-adapted version of the Cerato (Forte) platform, where drivers can refresh and rejuvenate, a place away from their busy urban lives. ‘Novatus’ is also the origin of the English word, ‘innovation’, upon which the identity of the Novo concept is built. The Novo concept’s body shape is a unique mixture of smooth, geometric design and a series of sharp, decisive lines. The interior has been designed to be strictly driver-centric, with its minimalistic cabin and roomy space. The Novo is powered by the brand’s latest powertrain, a 1.6-liter ‘Kappa’ turbo gasoline direct injection (T-GDI) engine, and paired with a seven-speed DCT for extra power and better fuel efficiency. Although there are no plans to bring the concept model to production, it provides a glimpse into Kia’s future compact car line-up. For more photos of the Novo concept, visit here. All-new Optima explained by Peter Schreyer When Peter Schreyer went on stage to explain his design inspiration and stories related to the all-new Optima, everybody was all ears. Mr. Schreyer explained the challenge his team faced in renewing the signature model of the brand. Being the first Korean automobile model to receive a Red Dot design award, Optima has continuously set the design standard for the midsize sedan segment and there was a lot of pressure to exceed everyone’s expectations. His team decided to retain the identity of the Optima while significantly improving every detail in the car. As a result, the all-new Optima gained a spacious and functional interior and a body shape composed of clean and delicate lines. It will also come with dynamic convenience features such as UVO (in some countries), a cutting-edge in-car connectivity system that will give drivers access to a suite of core functions from their smartphones. While all eyes were on the 2015 New York Auto Show, Kia rolled out a new compact sedan concept at the Seoul Motor Show. Called the Novo, Kia says the car is a small sedan with a coupe design, previewing the styling of upcoming Kia small cars. Based on the same platform as the Forte, the Novo only shows a new sporty design language, as Kia says it has no intentions of building this car. We can see the tiger-nose grille is slightly modified while big air intakes sit on underneath, framed by thin laser headlights. SEE ALSO: 2016 Kia Optima Video, First Look Inside, a simple, clean interior is said to provide “sanctuary from the frenzied outside world,” according to Kia. The rear doors are hinged at the back. Power comes from a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that sends its power to the front wheels. It’s hooked up to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The concept rolls on what Kia calls “adaptive concave profile” tires, which have sunken middle section between two areas of contact rubber. They are said to cool the tire, channel road water away from the tire, provide low-rolling resistance and provide a quiet drive. Two engines will carry over for the 2016 Optima including the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 185 hp and the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 247 hp. The all-new Optima, Kia’s signature midsize sedan, has finally made its much anticipated debut at the New York International Auto Show 2015. Five years after the introduction of the previous generation Optima, Kia unveiled a completely redesigned and reengineered model with an upgraded look and performance in front of global auto media. As the top-selling Kia vehicle for three consecutive years in the U.S., the Optima has evolved while retaining the sporty identity of its predecessor. Michael Sprague, executive vice president, sales and marketing of Kia Motors America, sums up the new generation model in one sentence, “The all-new Optima retains the signature personality of its predecessor, but we’ve literally improved everything, providing more space, better ride and handling, more technology and greater refinement.” Because the previous generation Optima was such a popular model, Kia’s designers focused on striking a fine balance between retaining the identity of the vehicle while making significant progress in keeping the car modern and fresh. Michael Sprague with the all-new Optima at the New York International Auto Show The marginal enlargement of the body and wheelbase of the car contributes to a more spacious cargo and comfortable cabin. From the outside, the aggressive front clip pulls the sheet metal taut over the wheel arches, and the swept-back headlights reach deep into the fenders. Inside, the car has found inspiration from Kia’s luxury sedans, utilizing more soft-touch materials throughout the passenger compartment with extreme attention to detail. Seat comfort was one of the major concerns for the design team, and the all-new Optima is now equipped with a new stiffer seat frame that reduces vibration and features a height-adjustable function. All-new Optima SXL interior In the U.S., the all-new Optima will be available with three engine choices, including the two powerplants carried over from the previous generation, the 2.4-liter GDI four-cylinder (LX and EX models) and the 2.0-liter GDI turbo engine (SXL and SX Turbo models). The new engine fitting for the all-new midsize sedan is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbo engine, which will be offered on the LX trim. Pushing out an estimated 178 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and a stout 195 lb.-ft. of torque at just 1,500 rpm, the new engine works well with its seven-speed DCT, a first for the Kia brand. The media’s reaction at the press conference where the all-new model was revealed for the first time was telling. The 2016 Kia Optima just debuted here at the New York Auto Show after going through a careful transition into a new generation under the watchful eye of supreme design leader Peter Schreyer. Following closely in the footsteps Kia imprinted during the Geneva Motor Show with its Sportspace concept, the new Optima looks like a step in the right direction for the South Korean auto brand. Two powertrains from the previous generation – a 2.4-liter direct injection four-cylinder engine and a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct injection four-pot – carry over offering 185 hp and 247 respectively. Those are both paired to six-speed automatic transmission, but there’s also a third powertrain on the menu. Starting in 2016, the Optima will also be available with a 1.6-liter turbocharged four linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. If that sounds familiar it’s because this is the Kia counterpart to Hyundai’s new Sonata Eco. This time around the Sonata is slightly wider and longer than it was before, but only by fractions of an inch in each measure, which is enough to claim improved passenger space, but only marginally so. Kia also made a point of improving the interior with real stitching on the dashboard and doors along with more soft touch material. Standard fare among the Kia line like heated and cooled front seats are still part of the package, but the company is also offering a power height adjustable front passenger seat to make outward visibility better for the vertically challenged among us. Cloth and leather seat upholstery are both available, but high grade Nappa leather is also part of the Optima’s options list. Aside from premium materials, Kia is also offering a new suite of technologies through its UVO infotainment system to let parents keep track of young drivers. Now you’ll get an alert if your little rebel drives outside a pre-set radius. You will also be able to tell if they are driving recklessly with a new “driving score” feature. The car also has a curfew and speed alert to circumvent the “I lost track” excuse. Kia didn’t announce pricing today, but sales of the new Optima are scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of the year.
