Kia brought a heavily Audi-esque concept to this year’s Detroit Auto Show featuring a 2.0-liter turbo four banger powering the rear wheels. That mill makes 315 hp and directs those ponies through a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission. The Concept rides on a “custom chassis” that leaves the car with less length than a Forte sedan and wider than a Cadenza. Its face looks as if it were lifted and re-sized from an Audi R8 to Kia’s imaginary new toy. From the right angle, it looks like the rear quarter panels were puled straight from an A5 while the sloping butt seems reminiscent of an A7. It’s a light little thing, too. Kia claims a curb weight of 2,874 lbs, which tips the scales hundreds lighter than the real-world Hyundai Genesis Coupe with a 2.0-liter turbo. The 2014 Kia Cadenza was named the International Car of the Year (ICOTY) by Road & Travel Magazine (RTM), which names the ICOTY every year based on style, comfort, performance and brand-consumer connection. <Courtney Caldwell (left), editor-in-chief of Road & Travel Magazine, and Michael Sprague (right), Kia Motors America’s executive vice president of marketing & communications, proudly pose with Kia’s second consecutive ICOTY award.> 2014 also rings in Kia’s 20th anniversary in North America, and RTM’s 2014 ICOTY distinction is the icing on the cake. “The Kia Cadenza wins in this category for a variety of reasons, including Kia’s remarkable effort to emerge in the entry-lux category,” said Courtney Caldwell, editor-in-chief of Road & Travel Magazine. “Overall, the car is beautiful and affordable, making upscale style and performance attainable to mid-America. At the NAIAS, Kia shifts gears – and turns its attention to sheer driving pleasure. Kia’s latest concept car does just that, and leaves you even more room for imagination. Hearkening back to the glory days of purebred, affordable sports cars, Kia Motors America (KMA) finally unveils the GT4 Stinger concept car at the NAIAS. “The GT4 Stinger is a throwback to days when driving a car was a visceral experience that wasn’t muted by electronic gimmickry,” says Tom Kearns, chief designer at Kia Design Center America in California, where the GT4 Stinger was conceived. “It’s a back-to-basics, 2+2 sports car that can turn heads as a daily driver while also being right at home on the track. It’s about purity, simplicity and timelessness,” Kearns adds. Power, Poise and Proven Performance Riding on the back of Kia’s on-track success in the Pirelli World Challenge racing series with a pair of turbocharged, GTS-class Optimas, the U.S. design team approached the GT4 Stinger project with an eye toward weight reduction, functionality and sheer driving pleasure. Beneath the low wedge of the GT4 Stinger’s hood resides a tuned version of Kia’s proven 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline direct injected (T-GDI) four-cylinder engine putting out an impressive 315 horsepower—the same engine used to power Kia Optima racecars on the track. That power is put to the ground via a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels, which are wrapped in 275/35R-20 Pirelli P-Zero performance tires. Staggered 235/35R-20 Pirelli P-Zeros nestle beneath the front fenders, ensuring loads of corner-carving grip. Custom 20-inch aluminum center-lock wheels feature carbon fiber inserts for strength and weight reduction. Tucked inside the massive wheels are Brembo Gran Turismo two-piece 15-inch cross-drilled rotors and four-piston calipers with plenty of stopping power. Underpinning the GT4 Stinger’s sculpted “Ignition Yellow” body is a custom chassis with independent double wishbone suspension. With a shorter wheelbase (103.1 inches) and overall length (169.7 inches) than a Forte sedan, a width (74.4 inches) greater than a Cadenza, and a swooping roofline nearly nine inches lower (49.2 inches) than a Rio subcompact, the GT4 Stinger cuts a menacing figure. It tips the scales at a scant 2,874 pounds, and weight distribution is spread nearly perfectly at 52 percent up front and 48 percent at the rear. The GT4 Stinger also features a quick-ratio steering rack for direct feedback and uncompromised control. We can’t wait to show off the latest creation driven by Kia’s innovation. There isn’t much about Kia’s latest concept car that doesn’t suggest that the company is about to get serious about offering a sports car. Kia doesn’t currently offer a sports car, but the concept on display seems like an obvious sign that the South Korean brand is planning on changing that soon. The concept car uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder to send 315 hp to the rear wheels through a close-ratio six-speed manual and weighs 2,874 lbs, which is almost 490 lighter than the 2.0T Hyundai Genesis Coupe. It may share an engine with the Hyundai sports coupe, but the similarities stop there. At just under 170 inches long, it’s roughly a foot shorter than the Hyundai product. The wheelbase is also 74.4 inches wide, which makes it wider than the brand’s full-size Cadenza sedan. Kia put 20-inch wheels with staggered widths on the car measuring 235 millimeters in the front and 275 in the rear. Brembo brakes grip 15-inch rotors for stopping power. But the most important aspect of the car is what you can’t see. The car is built on a custom chassis that uses an independent double wishbone suspension. That’s a difference setup than Hyundai uses with the Genesis Coupe, further emphasizing that Kia’s future performance plans could include more than a re-badged sports car borrowed from their Hyundai counterparts across the hall. Kia’s sports coupe concept will be fully revealed later today during the South Korean brand’s press conference, but an image of the GT4 Stinger concept has already leaked. The brand already announced that its 2+2 Detroit Show car is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine sending 315 hp through a six-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels. It rides on a custom chassis with an independent double wishbone suspension and uses Brembo floating discs with four-piston calipers. There are 20-inch center-locking wheels mounted outside those brakes with carbon fiber inserts as well. Notable design elements include the vertical LED headlights, flared front fenders, the signature “tiger nose” grille and a fastback. The cabin features tight-hugging sport seats, few buttons and plenty of metal inserts. There’s also a flat-bottom steering wheel and see-through A-pillars. The Kia K900 is the brand’s flagship luxury sedan that is platform mates with the Hyundai Genesis, making it no surprise that K900 nets the same fuel economy ratings with a best of 27 mpg highway. Two engines are available with the K900, either a 3.8-liter V6 that makes 311 hp or a 5.0-liter V8 that pumps out 420 hp. With the V6 under the hood, the EPA says that the K900 should return 18 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg combined. When fitted with the V8, the car is pegged to return 15 mpg city, 23 mpg highway which combine for 18 mpg. Both powerplants are hooked up to an eight-speed automatic transmission which sends power to the rear wheels. Kia is gearing up to reveal a sports car concept during the Detroit Auto Show next week, showing the last in its battery of teaser images today. The car will house a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine pumping 315 hp through a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels. Those 20-inch hoops are shod in Pirelli P-Zero rubber measuring a performance-ready 235/35R20 in the front and staggered to 275/35R20 for the rear. The car also gets two-piece cross-drilled rotors and four-piston brake calipers, all sitting on an independent double-wishbone suspension. In other words, Kia is bringing out the performance guns. The South Korean brand hasn’t said anything yet about post-show plans for the concept, but the gap in its product portfolio is certainly there. The suspension components mentioned today also suggest that this could be more than a re-badged and re-bodied version of the current Hyundai Genesis coupe. Ik lees op internet dat er al veel problemen zijn geweest met de krukas van deze klein kia's gebroken krukassen etc. Ik wilde eigenlijk zo'n kia aanschaffen maar heb nu twijfels. Ik lees alleen niet welke modellen hier last van hebben en of het probleem al is opgelost bij de nieuwere modellen. Het enige wat kia doet is de krukasbout vervangen voor een langere maar ik twijfel of dit effect heeft de oude zou te kort zijn (aan poelie zijde). Kan hierdoor je krukas breken door een te korte bout, lijkt me een raar verhaal kan iemand mij antwoord geven? Lees het hele artikel

At the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Kia previewed a pair of concepts that showcase the brand’s next-generation telematics and infotainment systems. The user-centered driver Concept (UCD – pictured above) has one goal in mind: keeping the driver’s eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. With that in mind, the Korean automaker designed an 18-inch head-up display that gives drivers an augmented-reality snapshot of information such as speed, navigation and traffic. In addition, a 12.3-inch TFT LCD cluster gives a 3D view of vital vehicle info while taking advantage of eye-tracking technology to maintain a clear view from various angles. The in-vehicle infotainment concept (IVI) gives a look at Kia’s latest innovations in the field of in-vehicle services. A 20-inch multi-touch center console display is at the heart of IVI along with “smart radio” functions that includes the ability to personalize playlists according to the user’s mood. Every day, drivers behind the wheel find that so many things around them are fighting for their attention—text messaging, checking social media, radio channel surfing. And while many distractions are actually quite avoidable, we are unable to quench our thirst for staying connected and engaged. Intuition by Safety But Kia looks to quench that thirst in the safest manner. Keeping the driver’s eyes on the road and hands on the wheel is central to Kia’s approach to in-vehicle technology, as evidenced by the technologies included in Kia’s User-Centered Driver (UCD) concept, designed for more intuitive interface between drivers and their cars. By enhancing the functionality of the widescreen 18-inch Head-Up Display (HUD), this UCD technology offers drivers an augmented-reality snapshot of vital information such as speed, navigation and traffic information. In addition, the 12.3-inch TFT-LCD cluster gives the driver a 3D view of vital vehicle information, utilizing eye-tracking technology so the driver gets a clear view from various angles. A hand-gesture controller allows drivers to access radio and navigation tools with simple hand or finger motions without taking their eyes off the road, and without a need to compromise safety. Kia sets the standard for creating a safe driving experience by connecting vehicles to outside surroundings, as its UCD system features visual and auditory alerts of drive-route hazards and real-time warnings for any potential dangers such as frontal collisions or lane departures, as well as current intersection conditions. Another key technology facet within the UCD system, called Your Voice (UVO), pushes the boundaries of connectivity and convenience and is meant to serve as the real connection between the driver and the vehicle. At the heart of UVO innovation is the Voice Recognition (VR) technology, which allows you to verbally ask your Kia for directions or to change the song. UVO also includes the SoundHound recognition app, and even integrates Yelp!, making the driving experience much more enjoyable. Look Ma, No Hands! It’s been a while since the introduction of Bluetooth technology and plenty of “hands-free” devices, but Kia looks to only keep your hands on the wheel—nothing else. A wireless mobile device charging system, powered by magnetic induction, lets drivers set their phone at their side to charge, without any connecting wires. Other key innovative Kia technologies were developed guided by the In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) concept, which aims to provide drivers with the best in-vehicle services with infotainment technology. Your Kia can construe music playlists by either detecting your mood or your current driving conditions, such as cruising along a summery coast, through the IVI’s “Smart Radio” technology. And you no longer have to fight about what you listen to with your passengers, as HD wireless (WiHD) technology allows every passenger to enjoy their own music and video content from the two independently functioning rear-seat entertainment units, while drivers can simultaneously access vital navigation information. <Kia fans experiencing IVI, the future of motor infotainment #CES2014> A 20-inch multi-touch center console display shows content, synchronized from your own smartphone, such as social networking sites, and also provides easy access to concierge or parking assist services.
