The 2014 Kia Soul has earned a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Soul earned five stars in the frontal and side impact tests while getting four stars in the roll-over test. The 2014 Soul’s chassis features 35-percent ultrat high-strength steel and 31-percent high-strength steel. Inside, there are six standard air bags while the Soul comes equipped with a four-channel, four-sensor antilock brake system (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution (EBD). Kia has proposed a settlement for disputes regarding the Korean automaker’s restatement of fuel economy ratings from November 2012. The proposed settlement affects current and former owners and lessees of vehicles affected by the restatement, which is about 300,000 vehicles from the 2011-2013 model years. The settlement is valued at approximately $185 million, though the final number will be determined by how many customers elect to participate in a lump-sum payment option or remain on the Korean automaker’s lifetime reimbursement program. SEE ALSO: Hyundai, Kia Admit to Overstating Gas Mileage on Most Models The proposed lump-sum payment amount will vary by vehicle and ownership type and will account for previously received compensation. The estimated average payment will be about $667 for retail customers. According to the Korean automaker, owners can also elect for options such as a dealership credit of 150 percent of the lump-sum payment amount or a 200-percent credit of the cash amount towards the purchase of a new Kia vehicle. The proposed settlement is expected to be reviewed for a preliminary approval early next year. “Kia Motors is a responsible company, and the proposed settlement enhances our goal of making things right for our customers by providing new reimbursement options,” said John Yoon, KMA executive VP of HR, Administration, Diversity Relations, and General Counsel. “Kia Motors is fully committed to taking care of its customers, and today’s settlement adds flexibility by adding lump-sum payment options to the transparent reimbursement program introduced last year.” Discuss this story at our Kia forum. Kia is teasing a new 2+2 sports car concept that will debut next month during the Detroit Auto Show. The Korean company hasn’t released specific details about the concept yet aside from its seat configuration, but it says the vehicle is ”aimed at delivering head-turning looks whilst providing superb driving enjoyment whether on the road or at the track.” Designed in California, the car will probably include stylistic elements that will show up in future products from the company. While Hyundai and Kia understandably share platforms and oily bits, the two are working to distance themselves from one another from a branding perspective. Hyundai offers the Genesis Coupe sports car and both the Genesis and Equus sedans meant to be luxury sedan fighters. Kia’s upcoming K900 shares its platform with the Hyundai’s Equus flagship, but there isn’t a Kia version of the Genesis sedan. For that matter, Hyundai doesn’t toy at all in the sport sedan segment, which could leave a gap for its sister brand to slot in with a more enthusiast-focused product with four full seats. Kia says that it develops new technologies to protect the occupants of its cars as much as possible. Indeed, the Kia Motors research and development centre is viewed by many in the industry to be a world leader in developing new types of safety tests as well as offering the latest developments in safety technology. Kia cars afford many safety mechanisms like ABS, EBD and VDC that help to protect people from potential harm when out on the road. Driving in Winter Nonetheless, there are some things that drivers can do to help prevent accidents before they occur and these safety technologies need to be tested in action. Most insurance underwriters will tell you that the least safe time of the year to be driving is winter. Not only will you be more likely to be on the road – statistically at least – during the hours of darkness, but bad weather can cause the car to handle differently. This is as true for any car maker as it is for Kia. One key area that more and more British road users are looking into is the use of winter tyres. They are also referred to, by some in the industry, as all-weather tyres. Safe driving in Winters In Britain there simply isn’t a legal regulation that says you must fit winter tyres on to your car under poor weather conditions. However, that state of affairs is not the case in Quebec, Canada, where owners of registered taxis, rental cars and other passenger vehicles are obliged to fit them between December and March. Since the state government introduced the regulation in their Highway Code, winter accidents and collisions have fallen significantly. Given that so many of the recent winters in the UK have brought snow, it is hardly surprising that more and more British motorists are turning to winter tyres – Kia drivers among them. Fitting winter tyres does not mean doing away with your old ones unless, of course, they have worn sufficiently to warrant it. Simply store your removed tyres for use another day. Go to a specialist tyre dealership, and ideally and independent one like Point S, who can offer you advice on the right sort of winter tyres. After all, you need to know which will provide the greatest amount of wear for the level of winter driving you do. How Winter Tyres are safe for driving? Winter tyres are manufactured with much higher silica content than normal tyres. This helps to prevent them from hardening when used in icy temperatures. Because they remain softer, they allow for better grip and, in some cases, this can lead to improved fuel economy – particularly if it is icy. Some drivers think that they can adjust for the lack of grip in snow and ice by making a reduction to the air pressure in the tyres. However, this remedy simply fails to work as well as expected most of the time. Furthermore, it can lead to reduced stability with the car’s handling, too, particularly when cornering. Unless you live in a very rural area and need to get across fields from time to time, then snow chains are more of an encumbrance than anything else. Although they undoubtedly work very well, you end up being forced to remove them the minute that you arrive at a road that has been gritted and cleared of snow. Kia’s 2014 Sedona minivan is one of the latest vehicles to earn a five-star crash safety rating. The South Korean family hauler earned a five-star rating in both front- and side-impact crash tests, which is enough to give the van an overall five-star rating. The U.S. government safety regulator composes its rating with three tests: side impact, front impact and a rollover test. The Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan siblings scored a four-star rating after being dinged in both front impact and rollover ratings; the same as the previous model year. As you know, (or at least you should) our (usually) weekly feature Ask AutoGuide is all about helping readers in need (or for our own amusement). People require vehicle-buying advice and we provide guidance (it’s in our name after all). Give and receive, that’s how it works; it’s just like Christmas except Old Saint AutoGuide shimmies down the chimney 52 times per year not just once in late December. Reaching out for a helping hand, Melissa sent us an e-mail this week asking for some car-buying advice. She’s a mother of three children and is in the family way again, but with a catch. A fourth child just isn’t enough; she’s decided (or rather her ovaries decided) to have TWINS, yes TWO babies for the price of one! Melissa’s brood is set to increase to five and her Pontiac G6 just won’t do. She’s interested in an SUV (crossover) and is terrified of the alternative (minivan). Pricing is important as is seating capacity. Are there any value-themed, family-ready crossovers out there that will serve her? Let’s explore a few possibilities. Suggestion #1 – 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander ES If price is paramount take a gander at the Mitsubishi Outlander. This smart-sized crossover seats up to seven passengers and costs just $23,820 out the door, including $825 in destination charges. It really puts the “you” in “value.” The entry-level ES model is powered by a 2.4-liter MIVEC four-cylinder engine that puts out a flaccid 166 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. It’s matched to an efficiency-minded continuously variable transmission. The range-topping GT model features a more powerful 3.0-liter V6 (with 224 hp) and a six-speed automatic gearbox. While short on under-hood fun, the Outlander ES is fairly thrifty. It stickers at 25 miles per gallon in the city and 31 highway; the vehicle averages 27 MPG, which isn’t too shabby. Around back, the Outlander serves up 63.3 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume behind the front seats. Aft of the third-row is about 10 cubic feet of space. Other standard features offered in the Outlander include remote keyless entry, a six-way power driver’s seat and electrically operated windows. Borrowing a page from Hyundai’s customer-satisfaction playbook this Mitsubishi crossover is backed by a five-year, 60,000-mile new-vehicle warranty. The Outlander’s powertrain is covered by an even more impressive guarantee: 10 years or 100,000 miles. S**t just got real. Suggestion #2 – 2014 Dodge Journey American Value Package Of course if Melissa wants to drive something a little more patriotic than the Mitsubishi she can always opt for a Dodge Journey, one of the most affordable crossovers in the country. An entry-level American Value Package model with a couple nice options stickers for $22,015 out the door including $895 in shipping and handling. One of the extras we insist she get is the available flexible seating group, which costs $1,300. It includes rear-seat climate control with three-zone air conditioning, a 60/40 split second-row bench and a 50/50 folding third-row seat, giving Melissa plenty of places to put her progeny. On top of that, we recommend she spend an additional $225 for integrated booster seats in the second row. It’s a genius idea with the potential to save a lot of time and hassle. There’s a lot of good baked right into this particular version of the Journey, from value pricing to prodigious seating capacity, but there’s also more than a touch of bad news as well. Unfortunately it’s found under the vehicle’s hood so there’s not much you can do about it. American Value Journeys are lugged around by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that generates 173 hp and 166 lb-ft of torque. That’s a pretty grim powertrain story but it gets even worse. The anemic engine is matched exclusively to a woefully outdated four-speed automatic transmission. The 1980s called, they said you can keep this transmission because they would rather walk than drive something with only four speeds. Taking some of the sting out of this drivetrain combination is fuel economy, which isn’t all that bad. This flavor of Journey stickers at 19 miles per gallon in city driving and 26 on the open road. It ought to average 21 MPG. It may be the American Value Package, but Dodge’s Journey is still built in Mexico. What’s more American than outsourcing your manufacturing to a country with heaper labor? Nothing, that’s what. It’s more patriotic than Colonel Sanders driving a red, white and blue Model T up the Capital Building steps in Washington D.C. to demand congress bail out the banking industry. Suggestion #3 – 2014 Kia Sorento LX The 2014 Kia Sorento is another viable option for Melissa, though it’s considerably more expensive than the fire-sale Dodge. Out the door a suitable version of this crossover stickers for $27,950, including $850 in destination fees. Why is it so pricey? Well, there are two reasons. First, you have to shell out a grand for the optional 50/50 split third-row seat, but of course that’s not all. Kia forces you to spend another $2,000 for the Convenience Package to go with those extra seating positions. Naturally that outlay nets you some attractive extras including a backup camera, second-row sunshades, heated front seats and Kia’s UVO infotainment system. Exactly like the other two crossovers in this comparison the Sorento is motivated by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. Fortunately for Kia customers this one is far and away the most powerful of this trio, offering up 191 hp and 181 lb-ft of twist. It’s matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. When it comes to efficiency the Sorento is pretty impressive as well. In city driving it stickers at 20 miles per gallon, on the highway up to 26. Combined the vehicle’s score is 22 MPG. Power and fuel efficiency, what’s not to like? The Sorento is probably the most appealing of these value-focused crossovers. But, and this is a significant caveat, it’s also the most expensive by a significant margin. The Dodge Journey is not that compelling, with a dearth of worthwhile features and an ancient powertrain. The Outlander is scarcely better. It features modern mechanical bits but that’s about the limit of its appeal, plus it’s a Mitsubishi, which is a company that’s as good as dead in America. This makes the entry-level Kia Sorento the least-worse choice here. DARK HORSE As mentioned at the top of this story Melissa is in the market for either a crossover or an SUV; she dreads driving a minivan. But are they really that bad? When it comes to function miniature vanlettes are nearly impossible to beat. They’ve got room for kids and cargo, and many even have roof racks so you can pile them with more junk. They’re typically affordable and pretty efficient as well. The Dodge Grand Caravan is about as stylish as one of these vehicles can be. And best of all it’s cheap! An American Value Package model starts under $21,000 and features a powerful, smooth-running 3.6-liter V6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. Just some food for thought. Kia has announced that its 2014 model year Rio sedan will be priced from $14,600 including destination while the hatchback will cost $100 more at $14,700. The base model Kia Rio comes equipped with a manual transmission and sees slight revisions for the 2014 model year. To improve its aerodynamics, Kia has outfitted the Rio with new underbody panels, covers for the engine and rear bumper. In addition, the Rio’s smart key now comes with a folding key while the interior has a new water temperature gauge and an updated leather-wrapped steering wheel. The 2014 Kia Rio will be available in three trim levels: LX, EX and SX. All models feature a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood with 138 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque. The economy car gets an EPA-estimated 27 mpg in the city and 37-mpg on the highway. Those looking for slightly better city fuel economy (28 mpg) can opt for the $400 Eco package, which comes bundled with the $1,200 “Convenience” package. The $1,200 Convenience package adds 15-inch wheels, the Korean automaker’s UVO voice-activated infotainment system, rearview camera, automatic headlamps, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, power folding side mirrors with turn signal indicators, dual map lights, dual illuminated vanity mirrors and front fog lights. The top-of-the-line Kia Rio EX sedan will start at $18,800 while the hatchback is priced from $18,790. A Premium Package can be added for $2,500 to add navigation, push-button ignition, hands-free keyless entry, leather upholstery, heated front seats and a power sunroof.
