  7. People place different levels of importance on various features when purchasing their next car, but safety should always be on the top of the list. The all-new Kia cee’d is no exception, especially with a Euro NCAP five-star rating as proof to that fact. Today on Buzz, we’re going to see what Kia engineers have to say when it comes to designing a car for performance as well as safety. New pedestrian protection technologies in all-new Kia cee’d The engineers in charge of collision safety for the all-new cee’d participated in all aspects of the car’s development, including design, packaging, system design and analysis, because safety performance can be improved when all components are designed well. The cee’d achieved the target scores in the frontal and side impact tests thanks to the improved vehicle body structure, employment of high tensile strength steel plates, and standard six air bags. The all-new cee’d passed the internal five star test thanks largely to the employment of an independent structure underneath the crash pad for shock absorption, the open cowl panel structure and the open space that was created in the lower part of the headlamp. Further improvements were made and then tested in order to ensure a satisfactory score in the Euro NCAP. Models produced in our overseas market were tested twice, first using a test vehicle manufactured from the Namyang R&D Division and when test passed, production model produced at the local plant was also tested. Testing with Tight Deadlines The all-new cee’d was tested several times using the early production models that were locally produced. Some of the parts had to be airmailed overnight by suppliers for the tests. Given the incredibly tight deadline, developers struggled to get things done in time, which led to some memorable moments. Kia Engineers versus Mother Nature “The safety test of the all-new cee’d was conducted by a certified assessment agency located in Spain. We travelled there directly after requesting that the Kia Slovakia plant ship the test cars to the assessment agency. However, the cars were not there when we arrived. We called the Slovakia plant to find out what had happened but they kept saying that the cars had been shipped out on time. After countless phone calls, we discovered that the vehicle delivery truck had been held up at the Italian border because of excessive snow in the Alps. There wasn’t anything that could be done to resolve the situation so we extended our stay in Spain. As soon as the vehicles arrived, we began the testing and we were able to complete all the tests just on time. In the end it all worked out, but I sure don’t want to go through that again anytime soon,” said a Kia engineer team spokesperson. Even though the engineers involved were under a great deal of pressure to achieve the Euro NCAP five star rating, they all seemed to have enjoyed the journey. When the all-new cee’d officially received the coveted five-star rating, they were all greatly relieved because their hard work had finally paid off. The engineer spokesperson remarked, “We feel like all our hard work was rewarded. We will always be pressured to yield even better result as time goes on, but we will be able to tackle future challenges to get the five star rating with confidence.” Learn More: Read more about all-new cee’d from our previous BUZZ postings: Kia Releases First Official Images of Next Generation cee’d Kia TV Ep.2: The World Premiere of All-new cee’d New generation Kia cee’d awarded top safety score by EuroNCAP All-new Kia cee’d Design Story – Exterior (Part I) All-new Kia cee’d Design Story – Interior (Part II) Lees hele artikel

  14. With the Kia Quoris heading to America in 2014, the Korean automaker is making the bold statement that it’ll compete with other luxury automakers by 2017. Kia, which is owned by Hyundai, has certainly done a great job turning its image around the last few years. Hyundai has done the same, and both Korean automakers now have their eyes set at the luxury auto market. The only problem is, Hyundai declared the same statement with a goal of 2010, and the Equus hasn’t quite captured the market that Hyundai had hoped. SEE ALSO: Kia Quoris In-Car Tech Detailed So will the Quoris be a better bet? Only time will tell. Based on the same architecture as the Equus, the Quoris went on sale this year in Korea as the K9 and is expected to be priced around $55,000 when it goes on sale in America. It’s an ambitious statement to make, considering the public still sees both Korean automakers as manufacturers of quality, yet affordable cars. Discuss this story at Quoris.org. 17. Despite advancements in hybrid power-trains and electrification technology, gasoline engines remain the predominant choice in passenger cars because of continued efficiency improvements, most recently through the increased use of direct injection technology. But are you gambling when buying a car with DI, which still has its fair share of concerns and problems? Direct-injection is becoming commonplace in new cars thanks to its positive effect on fuel efficiency. “The requirements for higher fuel efficiency being stipulated by the EPA assure direct injection will be an increasingly common technology on cars going forward,” Says Karl Brauer of TotalCarScore.com “A such, automakers will have to figure out how to make it durable and cost effective.” It’s the next generation of fuel injection, which replaced the carburetor somewhere back in the ‘80s. By result of squirting fuel right into the individual cylinder, the engine gets a higher quality of combustion and an increase in combustion efficiency. This means that a smaller engine with direct-injection can make as much power as a bigger engine without direct injection. By precisely timing and placing the injection of the fuel into the cylinder, engineers have managed to ensure a more efficient combustion. Therefore, it pollutes less too. NEW TECH, NEW PROBLEMS? However, direct injection isn’t without its critics. “There is a process of getting the technology to not only work but to be durable and cost effective,” Says Brauer. “The latter always takes time when a new technology first enters mainstream production.” There are many longevity concerns with direct injection equipped engines. For example, the high pressure injection used in these engines causes a lot of stress on the fuel pumps. Regular fuel pumps in non-direct injected applications operate at much lower pressure than the high-pressure fuel pumps in direct-injected power-plants. The difference is in thousands of PSI. Some high-pressure fuel pumps, like those used with BMW’s twin-turbo direct injection engine in the 2007-2010 335i, the 2008–2010 135i, 535i and X6 xDrive35i, as well as the 2009–2010 Z4 Roadster sDrive35i have been known to fail prematurely. Another problem with direct injection is with ethanol fuel. Ethanol is known to speed up the corrosion rate of some metals that are used in an engine. With the higher pressure of a direct injection engine, and thanks to the fuel injector being exposed to in-cylinder explosions, there’s a higher chance of a problem or failure. Because of this, it’s more important to use higher quality fuels. Finally, the biggest concern with direct-injection technology is with carbon buildup. In a direct injection engine, oil droplets tend to get ‘baked’ on the valve. Carbon buildup can create a lot of headaches in the long-term, with build-up being bad enough to make extra noise during operation and damage the engine. At the very least it can reduce fuel mileage, and affect performance. This issue can affect other components in your car’s engine, like turbochargers or catalytic converters. Luckily, some automakers have filtering systems in place to catch droplets and debris. Newer implementations of direct-injection are designed around these problems. Toyota’s D-4S system that is in use in some of its cars such as the Scion FR-S and Lexus GS350 have a second set of port injectors (not direct injectors) that run when needed to help clear off the carbon build up and optimize performance. Wade Hoyt from Toyota’s communications team explains “The main benefit is that it allows the compression ratio to be raised without pre-ignition or ‘pinging.’ Higher compression produces more horsepower.” Wade points out that “All of the D-4S equipped engines have higher-than-usual compression ratios.” OLD SUPERCAR TECHNOLOGY, NOW IN AFFORDABLE CARS While becoming commonplace, direct injection technology is not new. The first vehicle with direct injection is said to be the race-car turned production car, the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL. The usage of direct-injection is considered to be one of the key factors in helping the car reach its record breaking top speed of 161 mph. Where the 300SL featured supercar-like engineering like direct injection, the technology is now it’s being used in cars as affordable and frugal as the Hyundai Accent. Direct injection is helping to extend the dominance of gasoline powered vehicles everywhere. It provides more power, helps with fuel savings and can lower emissions without any change to the way the car drives. With direct injection used in the tiny 1.6-liter engine found in the Hyundai Accent, the car can make a (relatively) whopping 138 horsepower. The engine in the Honda Civic, which doesn’t have direct injection, needs to up the displacement to 1.8L just to make similar power. The 2.0L Skyactiv-G engine in the Mazda3, which makes 155-hp thanks to direct injection, is seven horsepower more than a non-direct injected 2.0L Subaru boxer engine found in the new Subaru Impreza. By itself, direct injection is pretty good at helping new cars get more range with each tank of gas, but when compared with other engine technologies, it becomes even more impressive. By combining direct injection with turbocharging in the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, the engine is able to make about 60 more horsepower. The two technologies come together in harmony help make a surprisingly effective package of power and fuel economy. It’s clear that the adoption of direct injection by automakers hasn’t peaked yet, and durability concerns are known. Additionally, with recent news from Hyundai and Kia that fuel-mileage claims are being downgraded, there’s a chance that some direct injection implementations aren’t as successful as marketed. With some more time and development, gains in reliability are certain to be achieved. And by combining direct injection with variable valve timing, smart alternators and start-stop features, the extra mileage achieved is certain to make the efficient and effective gasoline engine the dominant powertrain choice for years to come. 21. It was another exciting appearance for Kia at the Los Angeles Auto Show where the upgraded Kia Sorento and all-new Kia Forte (Cerato) premiered. Today on Kia-Buzz, we’re jumping onto the show floor to take a look at Kia’s presence at this year’s event. The Aquaman-inspired Rio 5-door made an appearance after its premiere at this year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas. An ocean lover like Aquaman would be happy to know that the Rio has a reputation of being one the most eco-friendly vehicles in Kia’s lineup, especially since 85% of its material can be recycled at the end of its lifespan. The Rio 5-door received the world famous West Coast Customs treatment with special gold, green and orange exterior paint and custom metal fins attached to the body, along with oracle LED wheel rings and body lighting across the exterior and 20-inch color matched Asanti wheels wrapped in Continental rubber. This fierce looking Batman-inspired Optima SX Limited was also on display at the auto show, with a matte and piano-black paint scheme exterior and dramatically lowered coilover suspension and muscular ground effects kit. It also features huge Ksport performance brakes for extreme stopping power, custom designed 20-inch black wheels with Batman logo center caps and a performance exhaust system. With a custom front grille shaped like a batwing that took over 40 hours to create, yellow LED lighting accents throughout the vehicle and the iconic bat signal etched into the SXL’s HID headlights, this ride truly captures the Dark Knight’s essence. One of the main stars of the show was the upgraded Sorento CUV with an all-new platform, sophisticated new styling cues and significant improvements made to its ride handling and comfort. It boasts an all-new chassis, a new gasoline direct injected (GDI) V6 engine that delivers 290 horsepower, substantially redesigned interior and a next generation UVO infotainment system. The redesigned Sorento also adds a top of the line trim level– the SX Limited – which delivers an impressive roster of premium features and amenities. 23. Some might have expected a small riot after news surfaced that Hyundai inflated its mpg claims on more than 1 million recently sold cars, but the media brouhaha was worse than any other backlash — so far. That might change very soon. Senator John D. Rockefeller IV, chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee isn’t satisfied and wants to know how Hyundai and Kia will deal with customers whose vehicles were bought under false pretenses. He sent a letter to Hyundai Motors America CEO John Krafcik which warned that the brands could face congressional hearings over the scandal. Representatives from Hyundai and Kia both declined to comment on the letter. “I will monitor the results of the EPA’s ongoing investigation to better understand how this error occurred, how Hyundai and Kia may have used inflated fuel economy numbers to attract consumers, and how federal enforcement agencies can better deter similar violations in the future,” he said. SEE ALSO: Hyundai, Kia Sued in US Over Incorrect MPG Claims Currently, the automakers are offering customers debit cards loaded with an amount meant to compensate for the false mileage claims plus a 15 percent bonus. “We’ve got eight regions in the country where we check the average fuel price. We look at how many miles you’ve driven and what the difference in your specific car what the fuel economy label was and what it’s been adjusted to,” said Hyundai public relations senior manager Jim Trainor. “Then you get 15 percent on top of that.” The offer is also good for the life of the vehicle. Moody’s Investor Service predicted that the compensation could cost the company $100 million annually. Still, the company is remaining profitable and if recent sales reports are any indication, both Korean brands will be able to weather the storm with relative ease. Lees het hele artikel
