  6. Kia is on a roll! Kia Motors America (KMA) recently announced the company’s best-ever October sales, setting its 14th consecutive monthly sales record.
  8. For a long time, the only brand with a poorer reputation than Hyundai was Kia. Despite being a subsidiary of Hyundai, Kia‘s vehicles were often a grade lower in quality, using decade-old Mazda engineering and projecting an image of cheap vehicles for those with poor credit (or poor taste). Now, Kia is on a roll, with sharp designs and technology borrowed from Hyundai, which has become a segment leader in many respects. Kia’s Optima sedan is outselling the Hyundai Sonata in their home market of South Korea, something few would have predicted even a year ago. Executives at Hyundai fear that sales cannibalization will occur if action isn’t taken to differentiate the brands. Hyundai is said to become the more premium, upscale brand while Kia will take on a sportier image. In the United States, the company’s lineups have a lot of overlap, but in the rest of the world, more differentiation exists, and Kia and Hyundai have established dominant positions in different reasons. 9. Kia has just announced at the LA Auto Show that they’ve teamed up with Kinetic Motorsports to campaign a pair of Optima SXs in World Challenge. The pair of race cars will join the Rio 5-Door B-Spec that debuted at the SEMA Show earlier this month as part of Kia’s racing efforts with Kinetic Motorsports. The turbocharged Optima race cars are set to enter the Pirelli World Challenge Championship and will compete in the Grand Touring Sport (GTS) class. Interestingly enough, the Optimas will be the first Korean vehicles to compete in the series and it’ll be interesting to see if Hyundai follows suit sometime soon. Drivers for the two vehicles were not announced, but Kia did reassure us that Kinetic Motorsports will continue the successful Forte Koup’s racing efforts in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. 10. It seems our very own Kia BUZZ editor Colin was beat to the chase in reviewing the long awaited all-new 2012 Kia Rio. Jose Antonio Lope, an editor at a blog dedicated to Korean automakers Kia and Hyundai, the Korean Car Blog (http://thekoreancarblog.com/category/home/), test drove the 2012 Kia Rio 5 Door with a 1.4 CRDi diesel engine. Jose is very interested in Korean cars and the newest technology from Kia. From his detailed review, you can see that he has a high appreciation for the all-new Rio’s many advanced and eco-friendly features. He starts his review with a comment on the overall size of the Rio, saying that the total length of the car is 4.04 m, which is 6 cm longer and 2.5 cm wider than the previous version of the Rio 5-door. You can also choose from two petrol engines, the ‘Kappa’ and ‘Gamma,’ or two diesel engines, the 1.1 CRDi with 75 hp and the 1.4 CRDi with 90 hp. He then mentions how the Rio also comes in an “EcoDynamic” version that includes various features to help reduce fuel consumption. Some of the EcoDynamic features include Kia’s Idle Stop and Go (ISG) system that turns the engine off momentarily when the car has stopped or is ‘idle,’ Low rolling resistance tires, a drag-reducing front grille, a gearshift indicator and a rear spoiler are also included in the EcoDynamics pacakge. If you are an environmentally conscious driver, you should definitely check out the EcoDynamic version of Rio. The two words that most often appear in Jose’s review are ‘fun’ and ‘comfort.’ Jose seems to have enjoyed his driving experience, claiming that the Rio had a great and soft handling that made driving very “funny” in the city, yet comfortable and stable on the highways. Jose was also impressed with the quality of the craftsmanship and the seamless finish of the interior. He complimented the quietness of the car and the quality of the materials that were used. Read Jose’s full review of the 2012 Kia Rio at the Korean Car Blog. For any Kia fans out there would like to share their thoughts on the all-new Rio, please feel more than welcome to leave comments! 12. Gas, tires and insurance probably don’t matter much if you’re in the market for a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro or Ford Mustang, but safety does. The Camaro and Mustang GT come with more-or-less comparable horsepower and grunt off the line. What the test drive won’t show you is that the Camaro is the first car to earn a perfect rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA uses front, side and rollover tests to determine a vehicle’s safety during a crash and have strengthened their standards since 2011. The Camaro earned a perfect score in all categories, where the Mustang only earned four of five stars in the front and side crash tests. The front-end tests are conducted at 35 mph and the side crash at 38.5 mph, as well as a slower 20 mph side-impact test against a narrow pole. Finally the NHTSA uses a mathematical calculation to determine how likely a rollover is. To be fair, most muscle car fanatics would call this story incomplete. The Dodge Challenger among many other cars have yet to be tested for 2012. The next best-rated were the Honda Accord and Kia Optima, earning a five-star rating in each category except the side-impact tests where they only got four. [source: NHTSA] Lees het hele artikel
  13. If you’re into basketball, you may have attempted a slam dunk at some point and realized that it’s no easy feat. This may be why we saw some jaws drop when Blake Griffin, power forward at the Los Angeles Clippers, jumped over the Kia Optima and won the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest in February. 18,000 basketball fans watched in awe as Blake’s teammate, Baron Davis, passed him a ball through the sunroof of the Kia Optima, the NBA’s official vehicle, while a choir sang “I believe I can fly” by R. Kelly. For those of you who haven’t seen it yet or don’t believe it, check out the video below. Not your average dunk, not your average midsize sedan After seeing what Blake Griffin could do, Kia decided to honor the rookie NBA All-Star’s achievement with a thirty-second television ad that features Griffin soaring over the Optima with the copy, “Not your average dunk, not your average midsize sedan, the all-new 2011 Kia Optima.” The new 2012 Kia Optima commercial: Taking things to the next level Blake Griffin and Kia Motors are teaming up once again to “take things to the next level.” This time, he’s donned a pair of roller skates wearing a Superman-like blue cape, helmet and blue striped sweat suit. The Kia Optima lead him to a raised platform, where he jumps, flies and makes a slam dunk into a hoop. www.youtube.com/watch?v=HezGNnmlwdU If flying over the Optima wasn’t enough and if you weren’t impressed with the All-Star’s awesome hero outfit, tell us what you would like to see from Griffin and Kia! 15.

  18. Kia has built up a solid reputation of producing quality, fuel efficient vehicles at an affordable price, and while it’s one thing for them to talk about it in their ads and press releases, it’s quite another to have that hard work and dedication recognized by a trusted, reliable source. 19. Is the Kia Soul just a touch too big for your needs? Well if you happen to live in Kia’s home market of S. Korea, you could look into their newest offering, dubbed the Ray. While the name might sound similar to the sea creature, the Kia Ray is neither sleek or stealthy. What it is, is a boxy city car for people who live in major metropolitan cities like Seoul. The skin is very much in keeping with the style of all modern Kia’s, so it has a wide grille accented with chrome, plus L.E.D. daytime running lights. What lies under the skin is anybody’s guess at the moment, although it could very possibly be carrying the three-cylinder, 1.0-liter engine or the four-cylinder, 1.25-liter engine currently offered in the Picanto, a model Kia sells in Asia and Europe, but not North America. An electric version of the Ray is also rumored. It is also believed that while the Ray does not use the Picanto platform, much of the hardware will be shared between the two models to reduce cost. What will surely be very unique to the Ray is the way its doors are arranged. While the rear door behind the driver opens conventionally, the rear passenger door slides, like in a minivan. The Kia Ray might not make it to the North American market, but it could be headed to showrooms in other Asian markets like China. [source: Autocar] Lees het hele artikel
  20. Yes it’s true. The actor who once won an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Buddy Holly, can be found today doing cheezy television ads for a Houston, Texas area car dealer. Then again, former martial arts action star Chuck Norris is doing infomercials for fitness equipment. Busey, who also starred in films such as Lethal Weapon (they call me Mr. Joshua) Under Siege and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, has been appearing in commercials for Century III Kia, alongside a guinea pig with the punch line “tell ‘em Gary sent ya!” It’s perhaps a little tragic to see an actor who had such great potential, doing TV ads like these, but then again, in these hard times, even Hollywood stars need to find ways to pay the bills. 21. Yesterday Kia released images of a new compact vehicle that will be available only in Korea, its home market. Its name is derived from the English word meaning “a beam of radiant energy or light.” The Ray city car offers practicality, individuality and innovative design in one box-shaped exterior. Don’t be fooled by its small size, the interior is spacious and highly versatile, providing maximized passenger and cargo space. The Ray’s front features the signature Kia grille with a unique side glass configuration and LED daytime running lights that enhance the vehicle’s aesthetic appeal and distinct character. Its rear has a wide and stable stance, with sleek LED rear combination lamps and vertical bumper reflectors. The Ray also has a very convenient sliding door on the passenger side, making it easier for passengers to enter and exit in tight parking spaces (a must in Korea as the parking spaces here are small and narrow) while providing a wide side opening for maximum cargo utility. What are your thoughts on the Ray? Would you want to see it in your country? Leave your comment below! Lees hele artikel
