Dirt flying, rubber burning, and your engine roaring as you drift through hair-pin turns – “Drive hard, drive fast, and don’t stop!” Welcome to the world of rallying, a pedal to the metal, heart-pumping race over stretches of public streets and rough rural roads with modified production or specially built road-legal cars. If you have ever experienced the thrill of handling your car down a twisty back-country road, then you’ve got a sense of what we’re talking about. Rally cars blast through some of the toughest terrain and climates, and wherever a course is located, one thing is for certain – it takes guts, talent and heart to handle the adrenaline-charged action of this spectacular and unpredictable style of auto racing. Alvaro Brandes is a Kia sponsored Peruvian rally driver who possesses the aforementioned qualities, and he has been pushing both the Kia Cerato (Forte) and Rio through championship victories on some of the toughest rally terrain on earth. And guess what? He’s very good at what he does. Alvaro has been carving a name for himself and Kia in the Peruvian Federation of Motor Sports (FEPAD), and Kia-Buzz caught up with him to discuss his recent championship and experience with Kia vehicles. But before we jump-in, here’s a little rally racing basics for those of you not familiar with the sport. Rally Racing Basics: Competitors race one car at a time against the clock, usually at one minute intervals. Events are usually several hundred miles long, often lasting for several days. Each car has a driver and a co-driver (or navigator). In-between the racing stages, the cars travel over public roads and are required to obey all traffic laws. So, what has this got to do with your Kia Cerato (Forte) and Rio? Rally cars are built to withstand real-world driving conditions. Racing takes place on public roads that come in all sorts of conditions ranging from extremely good to insanely bad. Whereas most race cars are extremely-modified, and housed in fragile exterior shells, a rally car is essentially the opposite. Although modifications are made, these cars must be able to drive on public roads during events, so they must be kept street legal. You can think of rally racing as the ultimate proving ground for your street car. Interview with Alvaro Brandes How long have you been racing in the FEPAD Rally? I have been participating in the Peruvian Rally Championship since 2002. During this time, we have been able to achieve five victories, and come in second place twice. In 2008, I signed an agreement with Kia and since then we have won the 4×2 National Championships for 2008 and 2009. We have also placed second for 2010 and 2011. This year we decided to participate with the new Rio 5. Out of 88 rally races; we have won 29; placed second 32 times, third 11 times, fourth twice; and fifth four times. I achieved 8 first places, 13 second places and 2 third places with the Kia Cerato (Forte) and Rio. The numbers indicate 33% of first places and that I was able to reach the podium in 81.8% of the races. Why did you decide to become a race car driver? It is not what I do for a living, but I dedicate a lot of my time and commitment to it. During the day I am an Operations Manager at Prodis SAC, a family-owned pharmaceutical storage company. Nonetheless, this has been my hobby since childhood and on the weekends I train with an ATV. What are some of the most important qualities to be a good rally driver? The most important qualities are to win rallies is to be fast and remain calm during the complicated moments. To know when to accelerate and when not to, and above all to have passion for what you do. Do you have any race day routines/rituals you have to follow? The routine starts on Wednesday nights. We travel to the rally area. On Thursday and Friday we prepare the route sheet. Saturdays and Sundays are the two racing days, which take place in front of thousands of people. As a ritual, I always put on my right glove first. What was the biggest challenge of the FEPAD rally? Having a car that is consistently fast and reliable on all tracks where the rallies take place. Four of the seven Peru rallies take place in altitudes as high as 2800 and 4200 meters above sea level. Also the varying weather conditions in our country force us to drive in rain, mud and heat. Which is your favorite track to race on? I have two. I really enjoy the rallies in the cities of Cuzco and Huancayo because they have the best tracks. What is the most challenging part about racing? What is the most fun part? The most challenging part is to be able to come up with the budget to participate in the National Championship. The most fun part is when the rally actually starts and you are able to accelerate! What kind of modifications did you make to your car for this race? How do you think that affected your performance? We dismantled and put together the vehicle in our small preparation shop called Pro rally, I have 4 mechanics that assist me. We were able to put together the Kia Rio in 5 weeks. The Rio has the mandatory modifications regarding security such as the seats, cage, fire extinguishers, among others and the performance spare parts such as the rally suspensions, the front self-blocking, the low gear ratio and the replacement of some spare parts for lighter ones in order to make the car lose some weight and comply with policy. The rest of the components are basically originals. The engine for example only has one ECU set and it is 100% mechanic and standard. You’ve had quite a history of racing with Kia vehicles. How would you compare the Rio vs. the Cerato/Forte? I have had the chance to drive with the Kia Cerato hatchback and we won the Nationals twice in the N3 category, then I participated with the Cerato sedan achieving two second places in the Nationals, and this year I drove the Rio 5 which has already won during its debut. The Cerato is pretty stable and fast in the speed tracks as well as long courses with curves. Regarding the Rio, it reacts faster to the steering wheel due to its size, and it’s easier to maneuver on the narrow tracks. Also, it’s lighter, which makes it highly competitive. Peruvian fans are delighted with its looks and nowadays it’s one of most attractive vehicles. What are some of the strengths of Kia cars? Kia manufactures very strong cars. For example, we are able to participate in a seven full leg championship (14 days of competition) with the same suspension, spare parts and steering whereas before we had to change spare parts every two or three tracks with other automakers. We drive on tracks that are in bad shape with holes and trenches, and sometimes the car even gets hit, but it never breaks anything that would take us out of the rally. Part of Kia´s success is that it makes very reliable cars, especially even they’re pushed to 100% of their potential, which is exactly what we do, and we’ve achieved great results! Stronger body shell, high-tech equipment and new look for our popular CUV When the new upgraded 2013 Kia Sorento CUV goes on sale later this year in most markets, it will incorporate significant changes which include a completely new platform, enhanced powertrains for better fuel economy with lower emissions, improved ride, handling and refinement, additional convenience and safety features, plus a fresh, new look for the exterior. Let’s take a look at what exactly has changed for the refreshed Sorento. A fresh new look with premium appeal Kia’s design team restyled newly upgraded vehicle’s front and rear, creating larger areas of body-color surface. Close and careful attention was paid, especially to surface detailing in order to cut aerodynamic drag. The ultimate goal was to match the new model’s stronger structure, premium quality and enhanced specification with a fresh look. New styling to look out for: Front and rear bumpers with vertical-axis fog lights Front grille and headlamps with LED positioning lights. Tailgate with reshaped LED combination lamps. Two-part glass panoramic roof with a single powered roller blind shade will be available. Optional 10-spoke machine finished 19-inch alloy wheels to enhance the Sorento’s profile (depending upon model trim) New high-tech features and top quality cabin trim Inside upgraded Sorento’s cabin, numerous enhancements create a refreshed ambience, with premium high-tech equipment available on some models and an extended choice of options. The interior can be trimmed in black or beige cloth or leather. There are also more soft-touch surfaces – with a satin chrome finish for the door handles, air-vent surrounds and switches – plus a new LCD instrument cluster, new center stack with 8-inch LCD display screen (7-inch in Europe) and a new center console featuring a straight-gate selector with a leather-gear knob on automatic transmission models – reinforcing the vehicle’s more luxurious character. Premium options: Powered, heated and ventilated front seats, Heated second row seat cushions Bluetooth® hands-free system UV-reflecting solar glass Air-conditioning for the third row seats. Silence is golden Kia’s engineers have implemented a host of NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) reduction measures to ensure that upgraded Sorento boasts even greater refinement than the previous model, making it one of the quietest vehicles in its class. Enhanced powertrains cut consumption and emissions Kia’s upgraded Sorento will be manufactured in Korea with a wide range of different gasoline and diesel engines (from 150 to 280 ps) to meet the needs of motorists in every region of the globe. Acknowledging consumer trends, Kia has fine-tuned both the Theta II 2.4 GDI gasoline and R2.2 TCI diesel engines to improve their efficiency. The revised 2.4-liter Theta II GDI engine Fitted with a new cylinder head, pistons, fuel injection and intake systems. Generates 9% more power (192 ps) and 6.6% more torque (242 Nm) Delivers better fuel economy and lower emissions, from 199 g/km. The Diesel 2.2-liter 197 ps TCI (turbocharged inter-cooler) engine The ‘R’ family of Kia diesel engines has become a popular consumers’ choice in a variety of Kia models all around world. New exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system which reduces CO2 emissions – down to as little as 153 g/km. Maximum torque is 436 Nm (automatic models) and 421 Nm (manual). In some countries, customers will also be offered Kia’s 3.5-liter Lambda V6 MPI (280 ps) and 2.4-liter Theta II MPI (176 ps) gasoline engines – while European Sorento buyers will be able to choose the smaller 2.0-liter R2.0 TCI engine with 150 ps. Six-speed gearboxes, plus choice of 2WD or 4WD Every upgraded Sorento model will feature a six-speed transmission (manual or automatic) and a choice of 2WD (front-wheel drive) or 4WD (four-wheel drive) – depending on model – carried over from the previous model. The 2WD drivetrain offers a weight saving of approximately 60 kg – enhancing fuel economy. The 4WD drivetrain is an ‘on demand’ system that delivers 100% of engine torque to the front wheels during all routine city and highway driving. Whenever a front wheel loses grip a percentage of torque (up to 50%) is automatically transferred to the rear wheels. In severely slippery conditions the driver can select ‘Lock Mode’ which delivers 50% of torque to both the front and rear axles. Improved on-road performance, retained off-road capability Kia chassis engineers worked hard to ensure that while the upgraded Sorento gives rewarding responses to driver inputs, it also delivers a sophisticated ride/handling balance to rival the best vehicles in its class. For precise vehicle control and good ‘feel’, the upgraded Sorento’s steering is now more direct, with 2.95 turns of the wheel lock-to-lock. Kia’s new FlexSteer™ system will be available as an option, providing Normal, Sport and Comfort modes with three different weights to match customer preference. Comfort mode is ideal for city driving. High safety standards with advanced ‘active’ and ‘passive’ systems The body shell in a nutshell: Extensive revisions to the body shell, which incorporates 25% more ultra-high-tensile strength steel than most vehicles in its class, Improved front, side and rear impact protection Bracing bar between the top of the front suspension towers is fitted and the body shell’s torsional rigidity has been raised by 18%, enhancing refinement and creating a stronger foundation for the suspension and steering, which benefits ride comfort and directional stability. Active safety technologies Customers will be able to specify a host of safety features in the upgraded Sorento ESC (electronic stability control) Reversing safety camera mounted on the tailgate with a 130 degree wide-angle lens HID (high intensity discharge) Xenon headlamps HAC (hill-start assist control), which prevents slip-back during stop-start driving on inclines. Radar-based BSD (blind spot detection) LDWS (lane departure warning system) using a camera above the windshield SPAS (smart parking assist system) with ultrasonic sensors to control automatic parallel parking. Cover your car Although we may want to wear fewer layers in the summer, our cars need extra clothing. Use a reflective sunshade to protect your car’s interior from excessive heat and sun damage. Apply quality vinyl or leather protectant on your dashboard and seats to guard from discoloration. Always remember not to leave explosive objects in your vehicle like a lighter! 2. Sunglasses for your car? Tint your windows. Make sure the type of tint material can block out ultraviolet rays. We realize there are rules according to your state/country, so we advise you to do this in accordance with your local laws. 3. Check your battery Check your battery’s fluid level. If it’s near depletion, you need to fill it with distilled water. Note that not all models require water supply. 4. Top off coolant Top off the radiator coolant tank whenever needed. Slowly open the cap with caution because the pressure inside the tank might be high. Give your car at least an hour to cool down. Did you know? If your car is exposed to strong sunshine, the temperature inside the car can rise to over 50°C (122° F) in less than 10 minutes. 5. Monitor Tire Pressure Use a tire gauge to monitor your car’s tire pressure and make sure you do this after the sunset since tire pressure rises during the daytime due to increased temperature. 6. Wash and Wax the Car Wash and wax your car to remove heat-absorbing dirt and oxidation. 7. Get regular service Take your car to a service center for scheduled maintenance before something big happens. Stay cool, safe and prepared with these car care and regular maintenance tips. R.A. uit voorzorg achterste arm vervangen en ergens anders laten uitlijnen.Na bekijken van beide rapporten is de conclusie dat er een probleem achter heeft kunnen zitten (af fabriek??), maar de gemeten voor en na waarden bij de eerste uitlijnpoging duiden op een uitlijnbrug op onjuiste hoogte.Bij de 2de uitlijning was er geen probleem R.A. dat door stellen niet verholpen kon worden.
