Concept cars are mostly built to taunt automotive journalists, but on rare occasions they do serve legitimate purposes. Sometimes they can tip-off what a car company has in development, and the black-as-coal Kia Niro is a clue as to what the South Korean brand’s next B-Segment offering could look like. Kia has confirmed that its dramatic new European concept, to be unveiled at the 65th Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) in Frankfurt, will be called the Kia Niro. Kia’s all-new Sorento crossover was just photographed while undergoing testing in Germany. Here’s what we can glean from these spy pictures. Not much is known about the next-gen Sorento, but it could be slightly larger than today’s model. That size increase could indicate that it rides atop the same architecture as the Hyundai Santa Fe. Hyundai’s crossover is offered in two basic flavors. The Sport model features a shorter wheelbase and only seats five-passengers. Kia just announced that the concept car it will bring to Frankfurt will be called the “Niro.” Meant to preview what that brand will market in the b-segment beside cars sized like the Ford Fiesta, the Niro seems to feature a raised ride height with two side doors and a rear hatch. The Korean concept is heavily styled inside and out, and Kia says it features an “innovative new powertrain.” Kia says the car was created with European tastes in mind and with elements not normally often associated with smaller cars. The Kia hamsters will return to the television set, when a 60-second commercial debuts starring the 2014 Kia Soul. The Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is partnering with the University of Michigan to devise systems that will help curb distracted driving, and reduce fuel consumption. Engineers from HATCI will work with graduate students and professors from the university in a collaborative effort to develop a deterrent for ‘highway hypnosis’, a mental state in which a driver can pass over many miles without recollection of having consciously done so.
