Korean automaker Kia is considering putting aside its planned diesel-engine mild hybrid program as emissions regulations become tighter and Volkswagen’s Dieselgate has heightened scrutiny of diesel engines. Albert Biermann, Kia’s performance development chief, told British publication Autocar it’s becoming more difficult to support the development of the more costly diesel engine as emissions regulations become increasingly tougher. “The research project is still going on,” Biermann told Autocar, “but the cost of electric motors and batteries in a hybrid is already significant. The question is whether it is really necessary to throw in a more expensive diesel engine.” …

Presented at an Automotive Press Association event in Detroit, the biggest revelation in this closely watched survey is that Kia is now the highest-rated brand, with a score of just 83 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). Kia is reportedly readying a compact crossover model that will compete with the Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V. Speaking to Motoring, Kia Australia COO Damien Meredith spoke about a new model that will be aimed directly at the CX-3 and HR-V and could possibly make a debut at the 2016 L.A. Kia is calling back about 219,800 Sedona minivans in the United States over an issue with the hood latch. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the secondary latch that holds the hood closed can rust, resulting in it sticking in the open position. Another piece of evidence has surfaced suggesting that Kia is moving ahead with plans for a small sports car. The Korean brand filed a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for “Kia Stinger,” listed under passenger cars and sport cars.
