The 2017 Kia Sportage has arrived in the U.S., making its debut at the 2015 L.A. Auto Show. Entering its fourth generation, the Kia Sportage is the Korean automaker’s longest-running nameplate and the latest model improves in all categories. Compared to its predecessor, the overall length of the crossover has been increased 1.6 inches to 176.4 inches, while it rides on a wheelbase that has been stretched 1.2 inches to 105.1 inches. Kia is hard at work on self-driving car technology, some of which will be introduced into its cars by 2020. The Korean brand is targeting 2030 for its fully self-driving vehicle which is currently under development. The brand will begin by introducing semi-autonomous systems in the Sportage, Optima and Sorento which will handle some of the driving by the year 2020. Over 256,000 Kia Soul compacts are being recalled in the U.S. The recall affects Kia Souls from the 2014-2016 model years and according to the recall notice, the affected vehicles could have their steering fail. The Korean automaker notes that the adhesive holding steering gear parts together may not be strong enough and the parts can separate. As a result, the issue could cause loss of steering, potentially increasing the risk of a crash. Kia originally found the problem after getting warranty reports from dealers. The current Cadenza model has been in production since 2010, although it didn’t arrive in North America until 2013. A custom Kia Optima with its top sliced off will make its debut at the 2015 SEMA Show. Called the A1A Optima, this custom sedan draws inspiration from the iconic Florida A1A highway and soaks in the sunshine with a convertible design featuring room for four. The Korean automaker had reinforced steel tubes hidden within the body to retain a rigid structure with the top cut off while the windshield has also been shortened to fit the design. Kia is celebrating the spirit of adventure for the 2015 SEMA Show and has fully revealed one of its projects. Having already teased an off-road themed Sorento SUV, it appears that the Korean automaker is embracing the wilderness for this year’s SEMA Show. In total, Kia will bring six highly customized, hand-built concepts to Las Vegas, each of which will showcase unique geographic regions found throughout the country. The Kia Sorento is getting transformed to celebrate the American Road, just in time for the 2015 SEMA Show. Called the PacWest Adventure Sorento, Kia is giving its SUV an off-road look for Las Vegas this year. Although the Korean automaker didn’t disclose many details about the project, it did release a teaser image showing a new fabricated front bumper with all the goodies you would typically spy on an off-road vehicle including LED light bars, snorkel intake and tubular front bumper sporting plenty of sheetmetal. The 2011-2013 Kia Sorento is being recalled for a transmission glitch. According to the recall notice, the affected Kia Sorento crossovers can unexpectedly roll while parked if the gearshift lever is pressed with too much force, resulting in a chip or crack to the break-shift interlock. As a result, that could cause the transmission to unintentionally shift out of park, even if the brakes are not pressed. The Korean automaker said three injuries, 54 warranty claims and 14 customer complaints have been related to the recall. A large explosion in China has claimed at least 50 lives and over 8,000 vehicles have been destroyed as a result. Currently it’s still unclear what caused the explosions, which injured over 700 people. According to a recent report, around 4,000 Hyundai and Kia vehicles were destroyed in the disaster, as well as 2,750 Volkswagens and 1,500 Renaults. Toyota also confirmed to Automotive News that it lost vehicles but currently doesn’t have a count. Volkswagen released a statement concerning the terrible accident, confirming that none of the vehicles involved will ever make it to market. Hyundai will have a total of five electrified vehicles in its lineup by model year 2018: Sonata hybrid, Sonata plug-in hybrid, a dedicated hybrid, a dedicated electric vehicle and the Tucson Hydrogen Fuel Cell. Maybe you’re tired of Kia‘s constant teasing with its sporty concepts, but there are rumblings that an actual sports car from the Korean automaker is on the way. According to AutoCar, Kia’s U.K. boss Paul Philpott dropped a few hints that an affordable sports car is on the way before the end of the decade. The 2017 Hyundai Equus and Kia K900 luxury sedans have been spied testing. While the Kia K900 is getting a simple refresh, likely with just new front and rear bumpers, the new Equus is expected to be heavily inspired by the 2015 Hyundai Genesis sedan. In fact, it appears by these spy photos that the new Equus carries a bit of a German design to its aesthetics, which is no surprise considering Hyundai is targeting BMW, Mercedes and Audi. Kia is dropping the price of its Soul EV by adding a cheaper base model. For the 2016 model year, Kia is introducing the Soul EV-e trim, joining the standard Kia Soul EV and EV+ in the lineup. Although official pricing has not been announced by the Korean automaker, Kia World is reporting that the Soul EV-e will start from $31,950 excluding destination, which is $2,000 cheaper than the standard Kia Soul EV. Hyundai–Kia is developing a system to allow its EV to charge wirelessly. The Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center along with wireless power company Mojo Mobility, Inc., have been awarded a grant from the Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies program to research and develop a wireless charging system. Mojo Mobility has already done research in this field and is known for its wireless charging systems, capable of transferring high power without the need for a physical connection.
