Building cars close to where they are sold always makes the most sense and Korean automaker Kia has plans to move production much closer to the USA. A new assembly plant in Mexico is on Kia’s to-do list, a source close to the matter revealed to Reuters. The 2011-2013 Kia Sorento is under investigation because its sunroof might randomly shatter. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has upgraded its investigation after consumer complaints were filed that the sunroofs on the Kia Sorento would spontaneously shatter. In total, NHTSA has received 95 reports of shattered sunroofs and there are 18 reports of minor cuts and scratches. No crashes related to the issue have been reported. Kia design boss Peter Schreyer wants more emotionally designed models for the company, but that might not materialize into much of anything in the near future. The company’s overseas marketing Lee Soon-nam told Automotive News that sales volume on a small sports car would be too small justify for the brand, which is still focused on elevating its brand image. Ward’s Auto has presented its annual top 10 list of best interiors and some of the vehicles on the list might surprise you. The folks at Kelley Blue Book have released their annual Brand Image Awards. The study, now in its seventh year, honors automakers for excelling in certain areas. Kia is planning to “raise the bar” in the minivan segment with the 2015 Sedona, which is set to be revealed next week during the 2014 New York Auto Show. The Kia Soul’s success has been surprising in the U.S., but is it good enough to merit a coupe variant? The Korean automaker is mulling over a Kia Soul coupe model that would closely resemble the Track’ster concept that debuted at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show. Heads up EV fans, Kia is on track to launch its first global battery-powered vehicle in 2016. The automaker will start building Soul EVs in South Korea next month. This will be Hyundai-Kia’s first pure-electric model for export markets; it’s expected to go on sale both in the United States and Europe. Less than a third of Kia dealers will sell its new K900 flagship sedan when it goes on sale this March. The Korean automaker has its sights set on the luxury market competing against the likes of BMW, Infiniti, Audi, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. The next-generation Kia Sorento has been spied cold weather testing, revealing that the midsized crossover will grow in its next iteration. The Sorento was spied by testing alongside a Hyundai ix25 prototype, which will be Hyundai’s first subcompact SUV. In addition, the new Kia Sorento was being benchmarked against the Audi Q5. At the 2014 Chicago Auto Show, Kia unveiled its 2015 Soul EV for the North American market. The Kia Soul EV will initially be sold in select markets including California, Oregon, New York, New Jersey and Maryland. Meant to compete as a less expensive alternative to German luxury brands, the K900 will arrive first with a V8 sending 420 hp to the rear wheels, followed by a less expensive six-cylinder version. The Kia K900 is the Korean automaker’s first model sporting an alphanumeric nameplate, but it might not be its last. Known as the K9 in South Korea, the automaker’s sedan is named the Quoris in other markets. Originally it was believed that the K900 would also be called the Quoris in North America, but the idea of an alphanumeric name gave it more of a luxury appeal than just Quoris. Kia brought a heavily Audi-esque concept to this year’s Detroit Auto Show featuring a 2.0-liter turbo four banger powering the rear wheels.
