Each one of these cars is inspired by the world of music. The first one the company is teasing is the Vans Warped Tour Soul. According to the press release it’s both youthful and fun. Slowly but surely Kia is transforming itself from a provider of inexpensive transportation appliances to a purveyor of premium automobiles. Further pushing the brand up-market, reports indicate the South Korean firm will build a production version of its dramatic GT concept. This four-door coupe design study was revealed at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany. It’s built on a rear-wheel-drive architecture and features a very swoopy body with design cues that wouldn’t look out of place on a Jaguar. It could go on sale in 2016. The concept was powered by a 3.3-liter direct-injected turbo-V6 belting out 395 ponies. The car’s engine was matched to a technically advan…

Count yourself among a very special few if you’re wondering how much the electrified Kia Soul will cost. It’s one of many cars re-purposed with an electrified drivetrain to satisfy a requirement by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Any automaker with annual vehicle sales over 10,000 units in California produce a certain number of zero emissions vehicles or buy credits from other companies that do so beyond prescribed the minimum. A list of low-volume, expensive electrified cousins to normally gas burning cars began emerging and continues to do so. Within the automotive industry, these vehicles are sometimes casually called “compliance cars.” That obligation o…

Plenty of great vehicles around the world skip American showrooms. For various reasons the business decision is made that selling vehicle “x” in the U.S. doesn’t make sense and it’s never offered. However, every once in a while a vehicle does sneak its way into North America, but only as far as Canada. Over the years, vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz B-Class, Nissan X-Trail, original diesel powered smart fortwo and Chevrolet Orlando have been available to neighbors in the north. And now there’s another: the 2014 Kia Rondo. Yes, it was sold in America before being yanked for poor sales. With frumpy styling and a mediocre-at-best value proposition, it made sense that …

Hyundai and Kia have issued the largest vehicle recall in South Korea since the current recall system was introduced there in 2003. About 660,000 vehicles across both Korean automakers’ lineups are being recalled for a faulty brake switch, an issue that has affected over two million vehicles worldwide. Kia’s 2014 Sorento crossover is one of the latest models to earn a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The vehicle is only three years only, but the Korean brand says 80 percent of its parts are new for 2014. It rides on a new platform shared with the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. It is unusual for a car in the middle of its lifecycle to come with that much new content, but the brand and parent Hyundai are actually saving money on redundant tooling by moving the Sorento to a new platform. NHTSA scored the car with five stars overall. That rating is based on three sub-ratings: a rollover test as well as frontal and side-impact cra…

Concept cars are mostly built to taunt automotive journalists, but on rare occasions they do serve legitimate purposes. Sometimes they can tip-off what a car company has in development, and the black-as-coal Kia Niro is a clue as to what the South Korean brand’s next B-Segment offering could look like. The company’s current subcompact car is the Rio. Along with products like the Honda Fit and Ford Fiesta it’s a solid all-around vehicle. But the Niro appears to step things up in a number of ways. First, its design is rather striking; though to be fair it is a concept car. It’s got a raised hood, two scissor-style side doors and a convenient hatch to access its rear sto…

Kia’s all-new Sorento crossover was just photographed while undergoing testing in Germany. Here’s what we can glean from these spy pictures. Not much is known about the next-gen Sorento, but it could be slightly larger than today’s model. That size increase could indicate that it rides atop the same architecture as the Hyundai Santa Fe. Hyundai’s crossover is offered in two basic flavors. The Sport model features a shorter wheelbase and only seats five-passengers. However, from hub to hub the standard version is nearly four inches longer, while its overall body is some 8.5 inches longer. The result of that extra size is a more spacious interior. The Santa Fe features …

Kia just announced that the concept car it will bring to Frankfurt will be called the “Niro.” Meant to preview what that brand will market in the b-segment beside cars sized like the Ford Fiesta, the Niro seems to feature a raised ride height with two side doors and a rear hatch. The Korean concept is heavily styled inside and out, and Kia says it features an “innovative new powertrain.” Kia says the car was created with European tastes in mind and with elements not normally often associated with smaller cars. The technical details are still being kept a secret, but expect the powertrain to be designed for fuel savings. The company plans to use this concept as a test …

The Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is partnering with the University of Michigan to devise systems that will help curb distracted driving, and reduce fuel consumption. Engineers from HATCI will work with graduate students and professors from the university in a collaborative effort to develop a deterrent for ‘highway hypnosis’, a mental state in which a driver can pass over many miles without recollection of having consciously done so. Using electroencephalograph (EEG) sensors, the engineers are looking to devise a way to study a driver’s brainwave activity to be able to identify the signs of drowsiness early on. When detected, an audible or tactil…

Are mid-size sedans all the car most people need? Some would argue yes. Unless your family exceeds five people, the majority of driving endeavors can be accomplished with one of these family sedans. Some may want a larger vehicle, or a sportier one, but from a purely practical standpoint, a mid-size sedan has you covered. Need to haul more people or larger items? A local rent-a-car counter will gladly lend out a minivan or a pickup truck for a small fee; much smaller than the penalty of buying (and fueling) one of these large vehicles that are called upon on a handful of times. Spacious, efficient and practical, mid-size sedans are designed for mass appeal and consumer…
