Hyundai, Kia Resale Values to Weather Storm of Fuel Economy Blunder: Experts

Last week Hyundai and Kia made an embarrassing confession; they’ve been overstating the fuel efficiency of their vehicles for the past three years. This miscalculation includes most of the models in both of their lineups. To make things right the South Korean automakers are readjusting the numbers and reimbursing customers. That should help rebuild trust but there could be more fallout from the blunder. Has the resale value of their vehicles been affected? “If there is an impact it’s likely to be on the smaller side, like 1 percent, but it’s entirely possible it will have no impact at all,” said Eric Ibara, Director of Residual Value Consulting at Kelly Blue Book, one of…

As webs meant to catch flies go, the Environmental Protection Agency‘s might soon look tattered and threadbare as its investigation expands to suggest Hyundai and Kia might not be the only brands fudging mpg claims. Controversy quickly embroiled both brands last week after the revelation that mileage claims on no less than 13 models are exaggerated by as much as six miles per gallon. The information could deal a heavy-handed blow to Hyundai whose 40-mpg mantra is about as important as your carotid artery in a market where gas is only becoming more expensive. In more than a decade, the EPA says there have only been two other products falsifying claims. But is that bec…

Vehicle quality was not the only thing making news when Consumer Reports unveiled the results of its latest reliability study in Detroit earlier this week. Amongst the issues highlighted by the consumer publication were real world fuel economy and forced induction engine technology. In particular, the watchdog organization took issue with downsized, turbocharged engines, citing efficiency and reliability issues with certain engines during real-world testing. Currently, automakers are in a race to the bottom, slashing engine displacement and bolting on boost to help meet ever-stricter fuel-economy standards. Brands like Hyundai and Ford are seen to be leading the charge …

After continued complaints by owners and consumer agencies, an audit by the Environmental Protection Agency has revealed that no Hyundai or Kia model achieves 40 mpg, a number often touted by the Korean automakers. In fact, Hyundai marketed its cars (including the Elantra, Elantra GT, Elantra Coupe, Sonata, Sonata Hybrid and Veloster), heavily, even using a “save the asterisk” campaign, noting that unlike rivals, Hyundai models achieved the all-important 40-mpg number without any qualifications. As it turns out, that’s no longer the case. Hyundai and subsidiary Kia have announced today that due to, “procedural errors” a total of 900,000 models sold between 2010 and 20…

Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia have admitted to overstating fuel mileage claims on most of their models over the past three years, and will now be forced to pay back car owners for their embarrassing error. Both automakers will begin to retrofit their cars with new window stickers immediately, that reduce the fuel consumption ratings by up to 6 mpg depending on the vehicle model. The companies are being forced to reimburse around 900,000 customers, for the entire lifetime that they own the vehicle. The reimbursement amount will be based on the mileage of the vehicle, and will attempt to pay back money that the owners would have saved if the fuel mileage rating was…

Kia has just unveiled five custom vehicles which take their inspiration from the DC Comics classic, the Justice League, at the 2012 SEMA Show. The five vehicles on display at Kia are the Optima, Rio, Soul, Forte Koup, and Forte hatch. Each one takes on a different persona, either Batman, The Flash, Aquaman, The Green Lantern, or Cyborg. This collaboration between Kia and DC Comics was put together to raise awareness for the “We Can be Heroes” charity, that helps fight hunger in Africa. Each car character/combination was chosen based on the main attributes of whatever the vehicle is. First is the Flash themed Forte Koup, which is meant to be fast, like the Flash. Buil…

Kia has just unveiled official photos of the updated Cadenza, the sister car to the Hyundai Azera, and the little brother to the Kia Quoris. The Cadenza takes on styling from the rest of the Kia lineup, including the front grille, headlights and front fascia. The rear end takes some style cues from the Optima, while the wheels are also straight from the Quoris. Unlike the Quoris, which shares its platform with the rear-drive Hyundai Genesis and Equus, the Cadenza will be a front wheel drive model. The 2012 Hyundai Azera runs exclusively with a 293 hp 3.3-liter V6, the most likely candidate to power the Cadenza. Neither the Quoris or Cadenza have been confirmed for A…

There’s a lot going on at Hyundai-Kia these days, especially in powertrain engineering. Never wanting to be behind the competition, the collaborative South Korean automakers have confirmed that they’re developing a new turbocharged V6. Displacing 3.0-liters, the engine is expected to feature direct fuel injection as well as other efficiency and power-enhancing add-ons. The end result is expected to be 350 hp and around 33 miles per gallon when bolted under the hood of the next-generation Hyundai Genesis. Which Genesis model is unclear at this point since the company offers both a coupe and a sedan, but the sporty two-door seems like the more logical application for thi…

Kia is ramping up for a busy year in 2013 with a slew of new models including the brand’s first ever performance car. Speaking with AutoGuide a company representative, who prefers to remain anonymous, let slip that a sports car of sorts will debut next year. Involved in a discussion about the affordable performance category, ranging from cars like the Scion FR-S and Hyundai Genesis Coupe to the Ford Focus ST, our source commented that “we’ll have one of those next year.” Most likely is a twin to the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, using similar powertrains and the same rear-drive chassis. Hyundai is already expected to debut another rear-drive model in 2013 with the Quoris, ag…

Hyundai Motor Group, the parent company for Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp., has said that both Korean automakers will be bolstering their engine lineups with more turbocharged and diesel offerings in the near future. To go along with the new powerplants, the Korean automakers are also working on new transmission technologies to help maintain their positive momentum. The current Hyundai Genesis and Equus are both offered with an eight-speed transmission, while six-speed transmissions have become standard through the Kia lineup and Hyundai’s more popular vehicles. The announcement came at the 2012 Hyundai-Kia International Powertrain Conference, an annual event …

Kia is going on a little bit of a comic book binge at this year’s SEMA Show, or at least that’s what it seems like. Joining its fellow DC Comics compatriot, a Green Lantern-themed Kia Soul is will accompany the already-announced Flash Forte next week in Las Vegas. Kia isn’t saying much about the car yet, but the teaser photo gives a few details away. First, and most obviously, it has a black-and-green color scheme to match the comic. Apart from that, it also gets a custom front bumper, blacked out head lights and Green Lantern logos on the wheels and fog lights. There will also be a Batman-themed Optima as well as Aquaman- and Cyborg-themed cars making an appearance.…

At a recent event in South Korea, Kia unveiled its 2013 K7 model which is rumored to be heading to America as the Cadenza. Much like the all-new Quoris, which is known as the K9 in Korea, the all-new K7 gets a design makeover with a sleeker front grille, new headlights, and restyled front bumper. The K7′s new design also borrows some elements from the K9 including its front fender air vents. It’s expected that the new K7 will launch in Korea next month and the Cadenza is rumored to come to North America in the first half of next year. Based on the same underpinnings as the Hyundai Azera, the Cadenza is a front-drive full-size premium sedan. Both the Cadenza and the E…

In a follow-up to the Batman-themed Kia Optima, the Korean automaker has teased its Flash-themed Kia Forte Koup that will be heading to the 2012 SEMA Show. Built by West Coast Customs, the Kia Forte Koup clearly will be unmistakable on the show floor in Las Vegas with a see-through Flash logo on the hood with a striking yellow lightning bolt. The Forte Koup will be the first of four Justice League-inspired cars, and part of the eight vehicles being built in collaboration with DC Comics. The Forte Koup won’t be alone at the 2012 SEMA Show though. Joining it will be inspired Kias by Aquaman, Cyborg, and Green Lantern. The eight vehicles are being built as part the DC En…

Kia is teaming up with legendary artist Jim Lee and RIDES magazine to bring eight customized vehicles representing characters from the Justice League comic books to promote DC Entertainment’s “We Can Be Heroes” campaign. The first of these cars is a Batman-themed Optima, which made its world’s debut in New York’s Time Warner Center this week. The Optima SX Limited has been customized to incorporate Batman elements throughout the sedan. On the outside is a matte black paint scheme that’s further contrasted with piano black accents. The coilover suspension gives it a lowered stance while a body kit offers a more aggressive appearance. Performance comes in the form of Ks…

With an almost never ending list of myths and rumors, few vehicles are as misunderstood as the hybrid. When the next-generation Kia Soul launches as early as next year, it will be available with an electric motor in place of a conventional gasoline engine. While the gas models will carry on and be the volume sellers, Kia marketing boss Benny Oeyen has confirmed the new Soul will be offered in Europe as a fully electric car. That model is also likely to arrive in the US, though perhaps only in California and select other states. Facelifted for 2012, the 2014 Soul is expected to be an entirely new model, though is likely to keep styling cues similar to the current version. Before the EV joins the lineup, look for a gasoline version to debut as early as the Chicago Auto …

Kia‘s flagship sedan was spotted today in the wild at Kia’s Canadian HQ. In fact, we managed to get up close and personal with the Korean automakers Kia’s 7-series fighting luxury vehicle. This model was badged with a model name of ‘K9′- the name given to the vehicle in Korea. This is interesting because Kia has mentioned that it will be called the Quoris in North America. The K9 badging was also referenced on the cars interior, with K9 emblems stitched into the headrests. This is the closest we’ve come to the K9, and it was certainly imposing in size. The car is clearly sized to take on the established luxury sedans from the Japanese and German competition. Big shiny…

The all-new 2013 Kia Carens MPV was revealed today on the 2012 Paris Motor Show floor, and it replaces the outgoing Kia Rondo that never quite caught on in America. The Rondo enjoyed decent European sales, so it has been redesigned specifically for that market, with no mention of whether or not it will come back to the States. With the Rondo looking dated in the lineup, the Carens looks to keep the small MPV from Kia fresh and relevant. The front end gets a new prominent grille, LED headlights, and a sloping roof line which adds to the slick design. The wheel base grows a little in length compared to the Rondo, but overall the Carens is a smaller vehicle, height and …

Kia has revealed its all-new Carens model ahead of its premiere at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, giving us a glimpse of what the Korean automaker calls a compact MPV. Essentially replacing what was known as the Rondo in the United States, the Carens features signature Kia styling while offering seating up to seven. Unfortunately most of the details on the multi-purpose vehicle will be kept under wraps until the auto show in France, but the automaker did say that it will be on sale in Europe starting next spring. Kia did not, however, release any information on what other markets it will make an appearance in. Originally sold throughout North America, it was dropped from …

Kia will be heading to this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show with a redesigned Forte and an updated Sorento, the Korean automaker has confirmed. The 2014 Kia Forte has already been previewed when the automaker debuted it out in Korea – where it’s known as the K3. While the Kia Forte gets a huge redesign for the 2014 model year, the Sorento heading to the LA Auto Show will be more of a refresh to hold us over until the all-new Sorento debuts in 2014. The next-generation Sorento will be based on the Hyundai Santa Fe, which will be a noticeable improvement over the current model. Kia has been the fastest-growing automaker in the US based on annual retail sales growth over th…

Kia is hoping to tap into an entirely new market with its luxurious Quoris sedan. The flagship model will feature plenty of premium amenities on the inside, much of which has never been seen in any other Kia model. Back in June, we previewed the force feedback control knob that the Quoris will utilize, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg on what the sedan has to offer. Adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, and an ‘Around View Monitor’ camera system are standard fare, while the 12.3-inch TFT LCD gauge cluster will be a first for the Korean automaker. In addition, there will be a full color, heads-up display that can show the vehicle’s speed, navigation details…
