  1. Kia is no stranger to exciting road trips. Just recently, we launched the Father and Son Road Trip project to encourage fathers and sons to share their stories with us and win a special overnight road trip. Today, we are putting together a list of tips for a great road trip for our fans. If you are planning a road trip in the near future or if you’ve always wanted to go on a road trip but were unsure where to begin, here are some tips to help you get started. Think about whether you want to travel alone or with others If you plan to travel alone, prepare a set of CD’s or a playlist to keep yourself entertained. Even better, you can prepare some playlists with certain themes. The company of a friend can be delightful, but just make sure you remember a couple of things. You and your travel companion will be captive for long periods of time. Before you make a commitment, consider how well you get along. Also, it may be a good idea to divide the work between you and your travel mates. Who will be navigating, who’s planning meals, and who’s driving when? If you are planning to travel with kids, be sure to check out your car seats. Car seats can occasionally loosen or even become unsecured since you last buckled it in. And you’re going to need to pack some snacks, drinks, garbage bags, baby wipes, paper towels and other necessities for kids. Pack lightly, but smartly You’re going to want a car charger for your phone so that you always have access to GPS and an easy way to look up hotspots wherever you are. Don’t get over reliant on GPS though; you never know about reception so it’s a good idea to have an old-fashioned paper map on standby. An emergency repair kit is also a good idea. You should have some reflectors or flares, jumper cables, and a tire iron in case of an emergency. A set of spare car keys will keep you from locking yourself out, which is sure to put a damper on the trip. For the extra cautious, it might be a good idea to bring a gallon of water and a gallon of fuel. Still, when you’re packing all your stuff, be mindful of how much you are loading down your car. The heavier your car, the more you’re going to have to gas up. Set a budget for your trip Although road trips may seem like a cheaper alternative to pricey plane tickets, you may end up spending more than you expected if you don’t set a budget ahead of time. The price of fuel will be proportional to how far you plan to travel. Plan in advance for parking and remember that it’s not always free. Rest stops can quickly become pricey if you don’t plan ahead for meals. Packing some sandwiches can really save you in the long run. Save gas by utilizing these gas saving tips Driving habits such as abruptly accelerating and braking is never good for fuel efficiency. Slow and steady is the best policy. Make sure your GPS is up to date with the most recent version. Old versions may drive you in circles, which is just a waste of gas and time. You can also use gas-saving apps on your smartphones. Check out more tips on staying fuel-efficient from our: 5 green driving tips: staying fuel-efficient post. Get your car checked out before any long trips Last but not least, your beloved car must be in its best condition before going on a special road trip. It’s recommended that you get your car checked two weeks in advance of your trip just in case there are some parts that need to be replaced. Here is a quick list of the most essential parts that should be in tip-top condition. Hoses and belts are crucial for your engine to perform properly. Your tires should be inspected for any damage or bulges. Under-inflated tires are not only extremely dangerous but they can also affect your fuel economy. Last, there are the brakes, lights, wipers, wiper fluid, battery, and air conditioning. Checking these are a must for any long voyage. (Eat your Kimchi team on a road trip with customized Kia Soul) So pack these tips away, and if you and your car are ready…it’s time to get on the road! 12. You can’t knock the hustle of Hyundai and Kia, just days after the Korean automakers were forced to pay an unprecedented amount of money for false MPG reports, the duo have announced that they’re looking to improve their fuel numbers substantially. Specifically, the Korean automakers are targeting a twenty-five percent improvement by the year 2020. The plan is to cut weight of key models, start using more advanced transmissions, develop next-generation engines and even use more turbo-charged engines. “In the first half of this year, group chairman Chung Mong-koo ordered to secure world-leading competitiveness in fuel economy by 2020,” Hyundai said in a statement. Additionally, there are rumors that a new compact, hybrid vehicle is on the way from Hyundai and a plug-in hybrid version of the Sonata sedan will debut next year as part of efforts to bolster its eco-credentials. This Sedona converts from a van into a beer-distributing machine in no time: the roof flips up while the walls flip down to produce a full bar ready serve some brew. One of the Sedona’s power sliding doors has been welded shut while the other remains usable as you can see in the photos and video. 2014 SEMA Show Coverage This thing can carry four half-barrel kegs in its cooled trunk and an extra barrel can fit in place of the front passenger seat. It also features a easy to clean interior, which can be hosed down after last-call. And since we’re at SEMA, this van has an upgraded stereo too. Watch the video and try not to get thirsty. 17. It’s going to be a great weekend getaway to the racetrack. A piece of land in the infield has been selected and everyone is ready to settle in for a three days of racing. Oh crap, someone forgot the beer! Well, that will never be an issue with the Kia Ballast Point Sedona. The custom project converts from being a minivan to a full-blown brew machine in no time at all. Using a hand-formed solid mahogany shell, the roof flips up while the walls flip down to produce a full bar ready serve some sweet cold suds. One of the Sedona’s power sliding doors has obviously been welded shut while the other remains usable so the designated bar tender can step inside and serve beer. If things get too busy, thirsty race fans can also enjoy a frosty beverage from the tailgate. In all, four half-barrel kegs of beer can be chilled in the back of the van. Extra passengers and cargo will have to find their own way to the track, this here only transports the important stuff. The front passenger seat is even deleted to make space for an emergency keg or extra supplies. 2014 SEMA Show Coverage Riding on custom airbags to compensate the extra weight, the floor has been lined so that the interior can be hosed out in case the bartender spills. Helping further with cleanup, stainless steel counters and a hidden tank to store water make cleanup a breeze. And what’s a bar without a kicking stereo? When the cars are done for the night, Freebird and Livin’ on a Prayer can be pounded out of a set of speakers mounted in the flip up roof. Want to be the hero of the local race weekend? Bring this van. GALLERY: 2015 Kia Ballast Point Sedona Discuss this story at our Kia forum The post Kia Ballast Point Sedona Knows How to Party appeared first on AutoGuide.com News. 19. Hyundai launched an online campaign today aimed at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Earlier today during a press conference in Washington D.C., the EPA announced that it reached a settlement with Hyundai and Kia that will cost the automakers $350 million for misreporting fuel economy numbers on several of its vehicles. In November, 2012, the companies admitted to embellishing fuel consumption estimates on 13 nameplates. At the time, Hyundai found itself backpedaling after basing its marketing campaigns on high fuel economy. In a six-minute video uploaded to Hyundai USA’s official YouTube channel, the company outlined how automakers derive fuel economy estimates and how the auditing process works. In the video, Hyundai explains how automobile manufacturers can arrive at different fuel economy estimates than the EPA does during its auditing process. The EPA was not immediately available to comment. Without explaining how it specifically conducts tests, Hyundai refers to “some manufacturers” at several points in its video while describing the coast down testing process used to calibrate the dynamometer for individual vehicles going through fuel economy testing. It also explains what it says are the primary differences in how the EPA audits are conducted. The total cost that Hyundai and Kia will pay includes a $100 million civil penalty, $50 million to establish an independent fuel economy testing group and the forfeiture of 4.75 million in greenhouse gas emissions credits valued at roughly $200 million. 20. It will cost Hyundai and Kia more than $350 million to settle the government’s two-year investigation into the inflated fuel-economy ratings of some 1.2 million vehicles. According to a joint statement by the Justice Department and EPA the Korean automakers will pay a $100 million civil penalty then spend $50 million to establish an independent fuel economy certification group. The companies will also have to give up about 4.75 million greenhouse gas emission credits, estimated to be worth more than $200 million. “This unprecedented resolution with Hyundai and Kia underscores the Justice Department’s firm commitment to safeguarding American consumers, ensuring fairness in every marketplace, protecting the environment, and relentlessly pursuing companies that make misrepresentations and violate the law,” said Attorney General Eric Holder. “This type of conduct quite simply will not be tolerated. And the Justice Department will never rest or waver in our determination to take action against any company that engages in such activities whenever and wherever they are uncovered.” SEE ALSO: 2015 Hyundai Sonata Review Over the past two years these companies have reportedly spent millions of dollars compensating owners of the Hyundai Accent, Elantra, Veloster and Santa Fe as well as drivers with Kia Rios and Souls, models that were affected the most by MPG errors. The Korean companies also agreed to additional federal oversight and were hit with dozens of class-action lawsuits, which the companies agreed in December 2013 to pay up to $395 million to settle. These days, more automakers are revising their MPG numbers. Mercedes-Benz, MINI and Ford have recently changed some of their cars’ estimated miles per gallon in order to provide accurate information to consumers and avoid any penalties like Hyundai and Kia are getting stuck with. 24. SEMA is an annual event that allows automakers, tuner companies and aftermarket firms to showcase their hottest, most exciting products. Surprisingly the folks at Kia have decided to bring a modified minivan. SAY WHAT?! Sure, they may refer to their all-new Sedona as a “multipurpose vehicle” but its sliding doors and boxy dimensions betray its true form. In spite of these inconvenient truths they’ve managed to make this family hauler pretty cool. SEE ALSO: 2015 Kia Sedona Review It’s built specifically for people that go karting, an entry-level form of motorsport where many professional drivers get their start. Painted in a bold red and white scheme and slathered in vinyl graphics this Sedona does NOT look like one you could pick up at your local Kia dealer. It rides atop 20-inch wheels and its roof is home to a custom-built rack that’s designed to haul a small kart. It also incorporates a UV-busting awning, which creates a nice shaded space to cool off between races. Check Out Our Complete 2014 SEMA Coverage At the rear there’s a special trailer that allows the driver to tow a high-performance shifter kart.
