That interactive screen found in most new cars has significant impact on purchase decisions, meaning new car buyers want a system that is responsive, pretty and easy to use. We’ve decided to rank our experiences with the infotainment systems offered by major auto makers. We’ll start with an honorable mention: We’d love to include the 17-inch screen found in the Tesla Model S but it’s too niche and limited to a vehicle few people can afford to own. However, it features a responsive screen that can be horizontally split. There is also a built in web browser. Beyond that, the system is quite cluttered looking, but features some of the latest high-tech hardware. We can’t wait until Tesla’s cars, and by extension infotainment system, becomes more affordable. The post Top 10 Infotainment Systems appeared first on AutoGuide.com News. Lees het hele artikel

The beautiful country of South Korea is where Kia’s headquarters lie, and as one of the country’s auto manufacturers, we’re always looking for a chance to showcase the beauty that lies within South Korea. So we were thrilled to have the opportunity to invite journalists from Italy for a visit! Kia invited Franco Gionco and Laura Seber from Motorcube Italy for a chance to experience the best of Korea firsthand with the help of the Kia Sorento, which proved to be the best tour guide for their trip. The journalists were in Korea for the first two weeks of March, and had a chance to explore the peninsula in a Kia Sorento, weathering various types of terrain. They hit the powdery slopes of Pyeongchang, located in the Taebaek Mountains region—also the site of the 2018 Winter Olympics—where many tourists and visitors flock to during the summer and winter months, to enjoy the many vacation and ski resorts located there. Franco and Laura had a blast zipping through the powdery snow on their skis. They then headed to the port city of Mokpo, located at the southwestern tip of South Korea, where they got a taste of the charming port city life, complete with visits to the fish markets. From Mokpo, they moved on to another must-see destination—the island of Jeju. Jeju Island, named one of UNESCO’s 7 Wonders of the World, boasts of the most beautiful natural sights in Korea—stunning beaches with breathtaking ocean views and beautiful hiking trails along the sea and mountains like Hallasan, the tallest mountain in South Korea, with an elevation of 1,950 meters. They also had the chance to visit the Dora Observatory located on the South Korean side of the 38th parallel looking over the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) and into North Korea. Back in Seoul, the tour continued with a visit to Gyeongbok Palace, a stunning landmark of Korean history that’s located in the heart of Seoul. All in all, we had a blast taking our Italian friends on a tour of all of Korea’s best attractions. Check out the video highlights of their trip below! Lees hele artikel

Kia picanto krukas problemen (Kia)
When it comes to driving, we all know that green means “go”. Unfortunately for some, in life, the light is red—not because of their own inabilities, but because of the surrounding environment. In an effort to give more people the ability to “go”, Kia has invested in the ‘Green Light Project,’ an ongoing social outreach project first started in 2012 that helps communities in Africa by providing facilities and support for sustained growth. As an automaker, Kia promotes the universal right to mobility, as well as the availability and provision of new opportunities for a better life. Target regions are selected after much careful consideration, and there we build either a Green Light Center or a school, whichever meets the community’s most pressing needs. In addition to the community facilities and schools, Kia provides vehicles like school buses to help transport children to and from the various facilities. Vehicles provided for the Green Light Centers are outfitted as moving health clinics, libraries, and video education centers to provide healthcare and educational services to residents of nearby villages. Currently, there are three Green Light Projects in Tanzania, Malawi, and Mozambique. In Motion Nagashanqui, Tanzania, the site of the first Green Light Project, currently has three educational facilities in place—a middle school, high school, and a daycare center—attended by a total of 600 students, grades K-12. There are also three school buses that help transport the students to and from the schools and center. The second site for the Green Light Project was Salima, Malawi. These projects are long-term endeavors that end once the communities are deemed to be self-reliant, after about five years of support. This August, volunteers from Kia will be making a community service trip to the first site of the Green Light Project in Tanzania. We also plan on implementing two new Green Light Project initiatives in Ethiopia and other regions within the next year. The ultimate goal of our project is to help communities stand on their own feet. By equipping them with the right resources, we hope to help these communities gain access to opportunities that they may not have had before. The Green Light Project best exemplifies our commitment to growth, not just in local communities, but all around the world. Kia’s take on social responsibility is to provide others with ‘a better way to go’—a principle that continuously guides the ways in which we give back to our community. Lees hele artikel

Kia Marketing Boss Lukewarm on Roadster for Now

Kia design boss Peter Schreyer wants more emotionally designed models for the company, but that might not materialize into much of anything in the near future. The company’s overseas marketing Lee Soon-nam told Automotive News that sales volume on a small sports car would be too small justify for the brand, which is still focused on elevating its brand image. Last year, Schreyer became the design boss for not only for Kia, but for Hyundai as well. During an interview with AutoGuide.com at the New York Auto Show last month, Schreyer said a sporty sedan was under “serious consideration.” “Halo cars are quite important for the brand image,” he said at the time. “The volume will be smaller and then we can’t enhance the brand image fully,” Lee told Automotive News. “We would like to build our brand image to some level. Then we can maximize the effects of the new car launch.” In North America, Kia’s rear-wheel drive flagship luxury sedan – called the K900 here – was a latecomer. Customers in other markets have had access to the vehicle since the 2013 model year with a smaller 3.3-liter V6 on tap as an option. For North America, Kia sells the K900 with its 3.8-liter V6 or its 5.0-liter Tau V8, both of which are shared with Hyundai. If you haven‘t noticed, we‘re very excited about this summer… As an Official Partner of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, Kia will be hosting a variety of events leading up to this mega sporting event celebrating football all over the world. We couldn‘t be more excited to partner with FIFA World Cup Brazil™, especially because of the rich football history embedded within the culture of many South American countries. So we thought, why not journey through the continent to ready ourselves for the international football event? On May 5, Kia will be launching ‘Road to Rio,’ a six-part TV series that explores the passionate culture and history of football in South America. The series follows comedians and avid football fans Mark Watson and Henning When as they travel to six different countries and discover how football became a way of life and culture in that continent. The football-obsessed duo take their trusty Kia from Uruguay to Brazil and en route they face roadside dramas with llamas, sample the local cuisine, and meet a host of footballing legends—a line-up that reads like the ultimate South American fantasy football team. Check out the sneak peek below! During their journey to South America, you can even catch the latest funky Soul urban crossover, the Sportage crossover, and the Sorento SUV. ‘Road to Rio’ will air on 40 television networks in 150 countries all over the world.* The duo start their journey in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay and host city of the very first football World Cup, where they attempt to track down Alcides Ghiggia, the only surviving player from the 1950 World Cup final. Then in Argentina, Henning and Mark uncover the secrets behind the country‘s footballing success with the help of Alberto Tarantini and try to beat goalkeeping hero Sergio Goycochea in a penalty shoot-out. After crossing the Andes into Chile, the duo visits ex-West Ham defender Javier Margas‘ extraordinary motel, go for a spot of wine tasting with Elias Figueroa and bake a birthday cake for Chilean goal-scoring machine Ivan Zamorano. On reaching Sao Paolo, they undergo some Brazilian male grooming before tracking down 70s legend Rivellino, meeting the future Pele (Pele‘s own son), and after various thwarted efforts, finally tracking down World Cup winner and Middlesbrough legend Juninho. After five roller-coaster weeks Henning and Mark eventually arrive in Rio. Mark takes to the air in a hang-glider to investigate how World Cup preparations are shaping up and the duo visit what will soon be the most famous stadium on the planet, Estádio do Maracanã. They also meet the Captain of Brazil‘s legendary 1970 World Cup winning team, Carlos Alberto, and revive a 1970s Brazilian craze, Autobal—football played by cars. (That should be fun.) Stay tuned for more ‘Road to Rio’ fun as we count down until June 12 when the FIFA World Cup Brazil™ finally kicks off. *Contact your local Kia PR representative for broadcast details (network and airing schedule) in your country. We all know that the earth is hurting. In light of this past Earth Day, we look to spotlight Kia’s efforts to build a greener planet, starting with our vehicles. We‘ve been hearing about global warming for over a decade, along with how our daily lifestyles contribute to mounting environmental problems. Recently, governments in the U.S., China, Europe, Japan and Korea have passed major legislation to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to 95 g/km by the year 2020. The main issue here is reducing the world‘s carbon footprint, and well, the motor industry is doing its part. Motor companies have been making increased efforts to be part of the change and lessen the world‘s carbon footprint. Take electric and hybrid electric vehicles. They are more than just a trend. They are a good example of how advanced technology is slowly helping to shape a better future. Kia has also been working hard to develop technologies that embody this ‘green’ mindset. In 2012, the average CO2 emissions for new Kia vehicles registered in the European market came in at about 129.5 g/km. Compared to the 167 g/km of ten years ago, each vehicle is emitting 22.5% less CO2 that it was 8 years ago. In the last year alone, there was a 5.5% decrease, a sign that things are really gaining momentum. Kia works towards improving the efficiency of our vehicles by continuing our research on internal combustion engines and on innovative alternatives to oil. We talked to expert Hyewon Kim, Research Engineer with the Eco Technology Planning & Management Team at Kia’s Namyang R&D Center in Korea, who tells us about the latest developments in Kia‘s green movement. What is the biggest environmental issue that automakers face today? Kim: Many countries are tightening regulations on fuel efficiency and emissions in response to increased amounts of air pollution. This makes eco-friendly cars, such as hybrids and electric cars, something of a no-brainer for automakers. The biggest takeaway we‘ve learned is to focus on manufacturing fuel-efficient cars that increasingly rely on electric power, while keeping the same price tag as cars powered by internal combustion engines. Automakers who can meet these demands while staying on top of their eco-friendly game clearly have an edge in the market. What kind of efforts has Kia been making to alleviate these environmental problems caused by vehicle carbon emission? Kim: In addition to developing electric vehicles, Kia is investing in other eco-friendly cars and technologies such as hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell technology. In 2011, Kia introduced its first hybrid vehicle for the global market, the Optima Hybrid, fully equipped with original technologies developed by Kia. Optima Hybrid was first sold in North America, Korea and Europe, and it is now available in other regions of the world. And as seen by the recent release of the K7 (Cadenza) Hybrid (currently only available in South Korea), we plan on developing hybrid versions of our other vehicles in different segments. Meanwhile, we continue to extend our research and invest in the development of electric vehicles, and we‘ve also created a road map to ultimately develop a completely zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. What types of technologies in Kia’s ‘green lineup’ help to lessen the harmful impact on the environment? Kim: Kia Motors boasts a full lineup of passenger cars, RVs, and commercial vehicles whose ‘greenness’ and safety are verified through a variety of domestic and international assessments. Every green vehicle is equipped with a battery and electric motor that propel the car forward. Because of this, one of the most important environmental technologies is called regenerative braking. When the driver steps on the brake pedal to slow down, the inertia of the motor is converted into electrical energy, which in turn charges the battery. In addition, the vehicles in our green lineup are also equipped with the Auto Stop & Start system. The engine automatically stops when the vehicle comes to a standstill and then starts back up again when the vehicle is in motion. The oil pumps in the vehicle engines are also electronically controlled. Which Kia vehicle best embodies Kia‘s efforts aimed at environmental preservation and why? What features does it exhibit? Kim: I would say the Soul EV, which just went on sale in Korea this month. The Soul EV, compared to many other electric vehicles in the same class, boasts one of the longest driving ranges on a single charge. In addition, it received the Environmental Claim Validation from UL, a renowned safety consulting and certification company based in the U.S.—a first in the automotive industry. With the Environmental Claim Validation eco-label, Soul EV has received an official stamp of approval for using bio-based organic carbon content for 10% of its interior materials. All of these environmentally-friendly aspects make the Soul EV an attractive choice for all environmentally-conscious drivers, and even locally in the Korean market, I would say the Soul EV will lead the way for further development of future electric vehicles. What’s the biggest problem eco-friendly technology researchers face these days? Kim: The greatest barrier at this point would probably be vehicle price. The systems that power electric and hybrid vehicles are much pricier than internal combustion engines found in conventional cars. Although the related technologies are already quite advanced, more funding and research it still required to further develop the advanced components—batteries, electric motors and inverters—that power hybrid and electric vehicles. The price to develop these components is costly. Even the hydrogen fuel cell electric power generation device (fuel cell stack), for instance, uses the rare metal, platinum. Although it only uses a miniscule amount, the platinum drives up the price of the whole vehicle. All of the researchers at Kia are trying our best to research other methods and develop our own technologies that can help reduce production costs. But aside from hybrid vehicle technologies, the infrastructure for vehicle charging must also be considered. We think Kia’s investment has been worth all our effort, because in the long run we hope that our innovations will set a higher standard for an affordable, eco-friendly driving experience. Kia Needs More Emotional Flagships: Design Boss
Kiaclub Nieuwsrobot plaatste een topic in Kianieuws van Autoguide.com
Kia design boss Peter Schreyer wants more emotionally-styled flagship products for the brand. In a sit-down interview at the New York Auto Show last week, Schreyer highlighted the GT concept that was shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show a few years back. That design study transformed into the K900, a car that currently sits as the Korean automaker’s top-tier luxury model, targeted at German super-sedans like the S-Class and 7 Series. But Kia has had several wild concept cars over the past few years, very few of which have made the transition to production. For example, it unveiled the hot hatch Trackster concept in Chicago more than a year ago. The Niro concept seen late last year in Frankfurt is now touring around the U.S. and showcases Kia’s interest in hydrogen drivetrains. Most recently, the brand showed a rear-wheel drive sports car concept in Detroit called the GT4 Stinger. “I think some how, at some point, we need more of those cars as flagships,” he said in reference to other Kia’s recent stable of concepts. “Halo cars are quite important for the brand image,” he said. Earlier in the month during a media launch of the 2015 Genesis, Hyundai Motor America CEO Dave Zuchowski emphasized how Hyundai and Kia are moving in more distinct design directions. “The Stinger would be nice. Or a car like that,” Schreyer said. But Kia product planning vice president Orth Hendrick downplayed the possibility of a small sports coupe in Kia’s near future, saying the development costs are probably too high to justify despite a positive reception for the concept. “These kind of cars are never high number, multi-volume cars. Of course not,” Shreyer said, acknowledging that such a product wouldn’t be a breadwinner for Kia. But Hyundai and Kia share engineering resources and it’s hard to imagine that the platform underpinning the new Genesis sedan won’t be used by both brands. That could mean more of the same from Kia with an updated K900, but then again maybe not.
