  1. Last month, Kia hosted the annual Kia World Extreme Games in Shanghai, China, at the Jiangwen Sports Centre, bringing together extreme sports stars and fans alike from all around the world. Over the course of four days from late April to Early May, over 200 of the world’s best extreme sports athletes traveled to Shanghai from almost 30 countries including Brazil, Japan, China and New Zealand. These athletes competed for titles in events such as BMX Freestyle, Aggressive Inline, Skateboarding, Speed Climbing and the newly-added International Freestyle Motocross (FMX) category. International superstars such as Vince Byron, Andy Macdonald, Pierre-Luc Gagnon, Mitchell Brusco, the Yasutoko Brothers and China’s Zhong Qixin were all present at the Kia World Extreme Games this year. In addition to competitions, fans also enjoyed various extreme sports performances daily, with well-known stars like BMX legend Mat Hoffman (aka ‘The Condor’) putting on shows for his fans. And to celebrate the addition of the Motocross category to this year’s competition, fans enjoyed a spectacular show from two of Australia’s top riders, Michael ‘Chucky’ Norris and Joel Brown. Both riders performed their stunts while cruising in the air above a Kia Carens with the amazing backdrop of the Shanghai skyline. " data-width="580"> Post by Kia Motors Worldwide. The siblings have now claimed the gold on the Vert for the past 8 consecutive years. The top spot of the BMX Street competition went to Kevin Peraza from the USA, and Vince Byron took the gold for the BMX Mini-Mega event. 2. People are noticing how much effort Kia puts into staying green and sustainable. Recently, Kia, along with its sister company Hyundai, was named the greenest automaker in the U.S. in an annual ranking of the eight top-selling automakers made by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), an independent nonprofit organization. The rankings are based on carbon and smog-forming emissions from each automaker’s vehicles, and we came out on top because of the green technologies incorporated in our vehicles that reduce environmental impact. This recognition follows Kia’s entry onto Interbrand’s list of “50 Best Global Green Brands 2013” in 37th place. The bigger Kia worldwide operations get, the greener our vehicle production gets. Bigger yet greener? Indeed. We make it happen because we believe that sustainability points us to a greater and brighter future. Here, we break down the numbers for you on Kia’s continued efforts towards sustainability and lessening our environmental impact. At Kia’s production plants in Korea, which are responsible for 46% of our global vehicle production, we saw a 4.7% decrease in average CO2 emissions per vehicle in 2013, in addition to a 6% decrease in water consumption at the facilities. The three major vehicle manufacturing facilities, located in Hwasung, Sohari and Gwangju, South Korea, are committed to greater investment into reducing unit waste and recycling, in combination with employee initiatives and heat capture technology to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, water consumption and waste materials. In 2013, 1.31 million cars (46% of total production) and 1.26 million engines were produced at the three facilities. <Aerial View of the Kia Hwasung Plant> Energy & Greenhouse Gases Because we understand that energy consumption is responsible for more thatn 80% of CO2 emissions in the world, Kia has undertaken multi-pronged efforts to cut CO2 emissions not just through greener technology inside our vehicles, but through better green practices within our manufacturing plants. In 2013, Kia’s Korean plants increased production by 12,947 units, yet saw a 4.7% reduction in CO2emissions per unit produced (29.4 kg per car), and a total drop of 30,507 tons to 788,000 tons. The total CO2 reductions in 2013 amount to the annual carbon intake of around 30.44 million pine trees. Water Resources Reducing water consumption is a top priority for Kia, as Korea is classified as a potentially water-scarce country, with annual per-capita rainfall of just 10% of the global average. Last year, Kia Motors’ total water consumption at the Hwasung, Sohari and Gwangju plants decreased by 305,000m3 from the previous year to 6.17 million m3—a 6% year-on-year reduction in per unit consumption, and a staggering 30% drop since 2003. This feat was achieved thanks to ongoing facility upgrades, including initiatives to improve cooling tower overflow and increasing the rate of water recovery from condensed steam produced during the manufacturing process. Employees are also constantly reminded to exercise water-saving habits at work and in the home. Waste management New streamlined waste management systems identify greater opportunities for recycling waste materials, and whatever waste materials are not reused or recycled are buried or incinerated, with landfill waste totaling just 1% of all factory waste. In 2013, 221,937 tons of waste was generated at our three Korean plants, down 8,399 tons from 2012. 93.3% of the waste was recycled. In particular, the Sohari plant, which manufactures 340,000 vehicles a year, has generated zero landfill waste since 2008. Maintaining a sustainable workflow in any sector plays a crucial part in protecting our environment and making the world a better place to live for the future generations to come. We are committed to looking for ways to lessen our impact on the environment whether it is through our facilities or vehicle production processes. Lees hele artikel
  3. This month, Kia surprised five young football fans with the chance not only to attend but to stand on the field during the matches of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™. In addition to donating US$100,000 to the Make-A-Wish International® foundation, Kia invited five wish children to become Kia Mascot Friends and accompany the official World Cup mascot—Fuleco the Armadillo—onto the pitch at half-time starting with a group stage match on June 23rd and through a semi-final match scheduled for July 8th. Wish children Aidan (age 14, Australia), Fausto (age 11, Mexico), Nathan (age 10, Brazil), Yuri (age 9, Brazil), and Bruno (age 11, Brazil) are known to be avid football fans, so Kia was thrilled to have the opportunity to invite them to Brazil and watch their favorite sport games live. Kia and Make-A-Wish representatives paid a surprise visit to Aidan’s football team practice near his home in Sydney, Australia. Aidan, who is currently battling cystic fibrosis, said that his greatest wish is to attend the World Cup—a wish that will become a reality this June. Watch the special moment when Kia and Make-A-Wish surprise Aidan with the ultimate gift: Check out more information on Kia’s FIFA World Cup 2014 sponsorship activities and events here. 5. Kia announced that its cumulative global sales have exceeded 30 million vehicles since Kia produced Korea‘s first three-wheeled vans, the K-360, 52 years ago in 1962. Have a hard time wrapping your head around what 30 million cars looks like? If 30 million Kia Optimas (also known as the K5) were lined up bumper-to-bumper it would span some 40,000 kilometers, equivalent to 3.6 times the circumference of the earth. The Kia Rio (also known as the Pride) has been the all-time most popular so far, with about 3,460,000 vehicles sold. The second-most popular vehicle is the Kia Sportage, with approximately 3,110,000 sold, followed by the Kia Sorento, with about 2,020,000 sold worldwide since its introduction in 2004. This wasn‘t an easy achievement. It was the result of fine-tuning and change within Kia as a company itself—starting with management normalization during the Asian financial crisis in the 1990‘s, then expanding sales globally to regions such as North America and Europe, and gaining a greater reputation internationally as an world-class vehicle manufacturer. And in 2007, Kia decided to revamp its management philosophy by introducing a new corporate culture centered around innovative design and technology. As a result, the Kia Soul was presented with a Red Dot Design Award in 2009, and has regularly made appearances in the awards list since. Kia is committed to manufacturing only the best vehicles for our customers all around the world, and achieving these sales numbers could not have been done without our fans across the globe. So, thank you! Here‘s to the next 30 million. Lees hele artikel

  14. You’re not the only one in a rush to get your body ready for summer. Your car also needs to get ready for the heat. Check out our five practical tips to help you get your car ready for the summer. Check the cooling system. The number one reason that cars break down during the summertime is from engine overheating and cooling system failure. To make sure that doesn’t happen to you, first, check that there is no debris around the radiator—a blockage in air flow can lead to overheating. Make sure to check your car’s coolant levels regularly. The coolant must be replaced at least once every two years. Also, be sure to check the radiator cap before summer starts, as they tend to get cracked or damaged. *Tip: Your radiator’s coolant and water mixture should be 50:50. Make sure your A/C is working. Don’t wait until you’re sweating buckets to find out that your air conditioning system is broken. Make sure it’s running properly by checking the filter. If it doesn’t feel as cool as it once did, make sure to take your car to an authorized Kia service center. Inspect your windshield wipers. Many of us will likely run into a few summer rain showers in the coming months, so it’s crucial to make sure your wipers are in tip-top shape. Because they’re made of rubber, wiper blades tend to be susceptible to higher temperatures, so make sure your blades aren’t worn-and-torn. If they are, replace them! And make sure you have enough windshield wiper fluid—things can get rough on those summer road trips, and keeping your windshield clean is a must. Monitor your tire pressure. After first changing your winter tires following the long, cold months, you should check the tire pressure about once a month. Use a tire gauge to monitor your car’s tire pressure, but make sure to check them after they’ve cooled down and after the sun sets, as pressure tends to rise in higher temperatures during the day. Also, be sure to have your tires rotated every 5,000 miles. Safety First: Because of our commitment to safety, many Kia vehicles come equipped with their own TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) sensors, which alert drivers of low tire pressure through a warning light on the dashboard. If your Kia’s TPMS indicator is blinking, have your car checked by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible. Wash your car! This may seem like a no-brainer, but giving your car a thorough wash is absolutely necessary to prepare it for the warmer weather. During colder months, cars are more susceptible to internal damage due to the bombardment of snow, ice, salt and filth that comes with rougher terrain. Make sure your car is squeaky clean—inside and out, including the wheel wells and underbody. Keeping your car clean also prevents premature degradation of auto parts. Did you know?If your car is exposed to strong sunshine, the temperature inside the car can rise to over 50°C(122° F) in less than 10 minutes. So make sure to get your car ready for the heat—inside and out—so you can fully enjoy the beautiful summer weather. Lees hele artikel

  18. The 2011-2013 Kia Sorento is under investigation because its sunroof might randomly shatter. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has upgraded its investigation after consumer complaints were filed that the sunroofs on the Kia Sorento would spontaneously shatter. In total, NHTSA has received 95 reports of shattered sunroofs and there are 18 reports of minor cuts and scratches. No crashes related to the issue have been reported. SEE ALSO: 2013 Kia Sorento Review – Video The investigation was initially opened last October. A majority of the claims that were filed cited the panels breaking while the vehicle was in motion.
