Hello everyone! After the Frankfurt Motor Show review, I would like to share some short, exciting news. Yesterday morning, the all-new Rio (called Pride here in Korea) was officially launched in Korea. During the launching show, the Rio 4-door and 5-door were launched. To my disappointment, the 3-door was not included in the launching plans. Because sedan-like cars are more popular here in Korea. It would probably be difficult to expect the 3-door to be introduced here. I personally prefer 2-door coupe and 3-door hatchback body types. So it will be fun to drive the 3-door’s 1.6GDI engine and six-speed manual transmission. The theme for the all-new Rio Korean launching show was media art. I’m not familiar with this particular area of art, but Nam-June Paik, a well-known Korea-born media artist, made it more popular. There were many media art pieces around the show, which I enjoyed seeing. I would like to share the some pieces that I thought most interesting: The Rio launching event started with a countdown video and a speech from President Sam-Ung Lee. He talked briefly about the history of the Rio (Pride), how it has evolved for 20 years since the first-generation introduced in 1987 and we now have the fifth-generation Rio. In fact, the Rio is the most meaningful model to Kia among it all line-up. In late 80s, it was Kia’s best seller car and Rio was a symbol for “small car” in the Korean market for a long time. After the key-note speech by president, there was a short promotional video for the Rio, followed by a presentation from the design team manager, product development team manager and chief of Korea Domestic marketing. Here’s the video clip of the promotion film. I’ll discuss the design and product development of Rio in more detail in a future blog post through test drive. One piece of exciting news that I’ll share with you now is that KARA, a popular K-pop girl group in Asia, is in the online promotional film. Kia will hold off on expanding its production facilities and sales targets in favor of improving the quality of its vehicles, CEO Lee Sam-ung told Automotive News at a launch event for its new Rio hatchback. “Quantitative growth is important, but qualitative growth is also important. We plan to focus on improving product quality and our brand,” said Sam-ung. Industry analysts worry that limited production capacity will be the biggest factor stunting Kia’s future growth. Sam-ung set a goal of 2.5 million vehicles sold in 2011, and wants to boost Rio sales from 110,000 in 2011 to 260,000 in 2012. They’ve only been racing two seasons, but Kia Motors America’s motorsports program has now achieved championship greatness, thanks to Nic Jönsson wining the driver’s title and propelling Kia to the manufacturer’s cup in the Street Tuner class of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge at Mid-Ohio. Jönsson finished seventh overall, having started the race with a three point lead in the class standings, which was enough to secure the title. Jönsson and co-driver Michael Galati were able to use the Kinetic Motorsports Forte Koup’s braking, handling and fuel efficiency to their advantage during the 2.5 hour race, battling a field of some 30 competitors to finish first overall in their category. “Second-year motorsports programs are not supposed to win championships but Kia Motors and Kinetic Motorsports have been committed to being the best since we formed our partnership in late-2009,” declared championship-winning driver Jönsson. “The Kia Forte Koups have been fantastic since getting off the truck at Daytona in January thanks to the tireless dedication of the team. Kia will launch their 2012 Rio Hatchback with a starting price of $13,600, plus a $750 destination charge (bringing the total to $14,350). The base car will come only with a manual gearbox, while an automatic transmission equipped version will cost $14,700 ($15,540 with destination included) while the top-of-the-line SX model will set you back $18,000 ($18,750 with destination included). The Rio will come generously equipped with air-conditioning, power steering, stability control, ABS, a hill-holder for manual transmission cars, and a 1.8L 138-horsepower engine capable of returning 30/40 mpg. It’s that time of the year again as Car of the Year begins the laborious task of whittling down new Car of the Year contenders for 2012. A total of 59 journalists, representing automotive authorities across 23 European countries, have been recruited for the task of choosing top car. The number of journalists to represent each country is based on the relative size of the said country’s car market. Countries like Spain, Germany, Italy, and Great Britain have a well established market, and each will be represented by six journalists. As for cars, only completely redesigned new models that have launched within the twelve months before the contest are counted. Each car must be available in at least five European countries and must have an expected sales volume no less than 5,000. Categories considered include design, safety, performance, and price. This year, says the judging committee, technical innovation and value will be especially influential. What also makes Car of the Year unique is the absence of separate genres for its candidates. Rather than selecting the best of the compacts or the best trucks, vehicles with all sorts of engine size and body types will be vying for the same allotment of points. Comparison testing of the vehicles will be performed in Sweden. Weet iemand ook hoe ik het oliepijl van de tussenbak en de bak zelf (handbak) kan controleren?Hij lekt wat olie daar waar de tussenbak tegen de versnellingsbak aanzit.Ik vindt na een nachtje nog geen vlekken op de grond maar hij is duidelijk nat aan de onderkant op de naad na een rit, bovendien zit de hele omgeving oder de olie. The No. 10 Infinity Audio Kia Forte Koup took top honors in the Street Tuner (ST) class at the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (CTSCC) race in Alabama! Drivers Nic Jonsson and Michael Galati captured Kia’s first-ever GRAND-AM championship on Sept. 17 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Kia and racing partner Kinetic Motorsports entered the season finale at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course with narrow three-point leads in both standings. Co-drivers Nic Jönsson and Michael Galati used the Forte Koup’s braking, handling and fuel-efficiency advantages on the 13-turn circuit to battle a field of more than 30 competitors during the 2.5-hour race, propelling Kia to its first-ever GRAND-AM road racing championships. After qualifying in the third position on Sept. 16, Michael Galati maneuvered the No. 10 Forte Koup into second place at the 30-minute mark before a full course caution went into effect and all of the top five ST cars headed to pit row for a driver change and refueling. Galati climbed out, and Jönsson jumped behind the wheel for the final two hours of the race. Jönsson steered the No. 10 Infinity Kia Forte Koup to victory when it crossed the finish line in seventh place for the Street Tuner class, good enough to earn Kia the driver and team championships in the season’s final race at Mid-Ohio on Saturday. Co-driver Michael Galati helped pave the way, holding second place at the 30-minute mark before switching out with Jönsson for the final two hours of the race. But it was no easy feat, as Jönsson battled it out in the 71-car field against two Minis and two Mazda3s that held court the top five positions for most of the race. With 30-minutes to go in the race, Jönsson executed a perfect inside pass of one of the MazdaSpeed3s and moved the No. 10 Forte Koup into fourth place. Just a few laps later, the first-place MINI lost all power and a full-course caution was issued, with Jönsson now sitting in third place. Once the green flag waved again, Jönsson managed to cross the finish line in seventh place as his Kinetic Motorsports teammates began celebrating Kia and Kinetic Motorsports’ first-ever GRAND-AM road racing titles on pit row. Hello everyone, it has been quite some time since my last post on the Optima Hybrid test drive (http://kia-buzz.com/?p=7891). This time, I would like to take you through the Frankfurt Motor Show Press Day, which took place last Tuesday, and I had the pleasure of attending. As most of you know, the Frankfurt Motor Show is one of the world’s five largest motor shows. The sheer size and importance of the show places it as one of the top three world motor shows along with the Geneva Motor Show and the Paris Motor Show. Like all motor shows, Frankfurt is where major automobile manufacturers reveal their latest models and which direction they are heading in for the future, but Frankfurt is special in that it has the largest exhibition space among the three international motor shows. This year, a total of 11 halls were provided, requiring more than two days to even just skim through all the car brands present. I was exhausted from all the walking and looking around whole halls. The slogan for this year’s motor show was, “Future comes as standard.” It clearly emphasizes the fact that the future is here and now, and it certainly looked as if the slogan was true, as most of the brands were busy showing off their very latest technology. One of the technologies that every brand mentioned was ‘efficiency’. While engine capacity is becoming smaller and turbo charger is becoming a standard feature. Hybrid cars and more realistically drivable electric cars were also introduced. Now, let’s get back to Kia. Two hero products from Kia were the all-new Rio 3-door and the new sports concept car, the Kia GT. For the all-new Rio, the five-door model was introduced at the last Geneva Motor Show and the four-door sedan was shown at the New York Motor Show. Now the most recent version of the all-new Rio, the 3-door model, has been introduced with its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. You probably noticed that hatchback version of the all-new Rio have been revealed in the European market, while the 4-door sedan was introduced in the North American market. Needless to say, hatchbacks are more popular in Europe while North America still prefers sedan-like cars. The all-new Rio in the European market also offers a Low Emission version and as you can see from the picture below, it proudly boasts a class-leading CO2 emissions figure of 85g/km on its side door. In Europe, there is a tax break for cars with lower CO2 emissions so many car brands compete fiercely to provide drivers with clean diesel engine or hybrid options. This in turn reduces drivers’ expense to run their own cars and at the same time, is better for the environment in the long run. Getting back to the motor show, Kia’s Press Conference had several interesting pieces of news. The first is Kia’s plan for new models in the future – it was announced that the brand will announce 20 more new models from 2011 to 2014. I was indeed very curious as to what new models are prepared for Kia. The second news was the announcement that the newest model of the cee’d will be available in 2012. If you look behind the covered all-new Rio 3-door, you can see a design concept of the new generation of the cee’d. Look at it closely, because I’ll mention it again later on to prove an important point. A few of my colleagues who have already seen the prototype told me that the new model will blow people away with its very stylish design, and I expect many people to be pleasantly surprised as well. The third news from Kia is that the Naimo, an electric powered concept car introduced at the last Seoul Motor Show, will be on sale from 2014. Now I’m beginning to understand the show’s slogan about the future coming as standard. Pretty soon, we might have to get used to listening to the sounds of an electronic motor not the internal combustions engine. Lastly, the Kia GT. GT stands for Grand Touring Car or Gran Turismo (Italian). It literally means a car that can take a driver from point A to point B comfortably at a fast speed. As Peter Schreyer announced, the Kia GT is a car that is redesigned and reinterpreted from popular GT cars in 1970s for Kia’s 21st century design code. As expected, the GT prominently features the Kia signature grille on its front mask. Its luminous headlights is coiled stylishly with LED, and it is more likely that the GT will come with LED DRL (daytime running lights) like the Cadezna’s if it enters mass production. The carbon- based front bumper tip below the front grille gives an overall sporty image of the car. Also, the front wing part of the GT in front of the headlamp makes it look sportier. If there wasn’t those wings, the car’s design would have looked somewhat ordinary. The front mask reminds me a particular Kia concept. Is there a model that you are reminded of? For me, it’s the Kia KEE. It’s almost as if the GT is the result of the grown-up KEE and growing muscles. Specifically, the design elements of the “ㄷ” character around the headlamps have given the GT a new and interesting design language expressed as a front wing. The rear design is very simple. The rear lights across the trunk are neither too big nor too small and provide perfect space for the Kia emblem and a number plate. Additionally, the rear diffuser and dual muffler reflect that the car is a high-performance sports sedan. While people may wonder how the trunk opens, that is a detail that has not yet been revealed. If the concept car hits mass production, it is likely that the trunk will be revamped to open practically. Shall we take a look at the side view? The side view offers a complete look at the car’s proportions, and you can immediately tell that the GT has a long nose-short deck ratio. These types of proportions are only common on FR (front engine rear drive wheel) vehicles and are one of their unique characteristics. The roofline aims to provide an overall coupe-like feel. The GT has a similar roofline to the Optima Hybrid, which I test drove and wrote about in the past, but also features a gold garnish from the A-pillar to the trunk. This roofline garnish exudes an extremely luxurious feel and capture attention in just one glance. The concise and straight beltline shows off Kia’s unique design identity. Suicide doors (where the front and back doors open in opposite directions) have been selected as the door design. The outside door handle gathers in one spot, allowing very simple surface look. Also passengers have a more pleasant entry way, particularly as there is no B pillar. The iconic wheel that embodies the propeller (made up of carbon fiber as decoration elements) and the carbon-fiber side skirt are also very attractive. Another unique trait is the side mirror camera that replaces the side mirror. Although this feature is not that surprising, as it was also included on the Kia POP electric car concept, its location is very interesting. Doesn’t it have the same positioning as the side mirror of a 1970s car? That’s not all. The A filler’s triangular secondary windows follow the same design elements from popular cars of that time. To put it simply, the Kia GT is a modern reinterpretation of a 1970s GT and shows pristine design elements that express a “modern yet antique” feel, although this phrase may seem paradoxical. Remember how I said to keep the cee’d concept design in mind? Now take a look at the cee’d design and that of the GT. The front grilles’ appearance and the overall design are pretty similar between the two cars. The front grille is bigger than that on current Kia models such as Optima and Cerato/Forte. Optima and Cerato/Forte is the products which represent the current Kia design identity and Kia GT is not only just a concept car but represent the future Kia design direction with more streamlined and muscular appearance. I’m also very curious as to how this concept car will be changed for mass production and when it will really be available. As a last note, there was another car at the Kia booth at the Frankfurt Motor took my attention: the Picanto 3-door racing version. It looks like the car that was seen at the Kia LOTOS Race 2011(2011 (http://kia-buzz.com/?p=7547), organized by Kia Poland. When you see its outer appearance, don’t you immediately want to start racing? Personally, I can’t stop daydreaming about decorating a Picanto like this and racing it along a circuit. The rear appearance is also very sporty. Even the interior of the car is reformed in order to lighten the weigh of the car. Don’t you just want to get your hands on that steering wheel? I do! Ha ha. Only until recently did Kia find its groove and really start to deliver a lineup of attractive cars. However, Hyundai‘s vision for Kia’s future has something different in store. Rumors have suggested that Hyundai-Kia Automotive group may be performing an unprecedented hedge to have Kia carry a solely electric vehicle green model range while Hyundai continues to develop plug-in hybrid and fuel cell cars. The motivation behind this strategy is to push Kia to unveil the automaker’s first highway-capable electric vehicle (code named TAM) by the end of 2011. Furthermore, Hyundai will continue their research and development over a hydrogen fuel cell Tucson concept set to debut for 2013. Kia’s most recent move towards a production-ready EV came at the Seoul Motor Show, with the Naimo Concept, an electric car that’s slightly larger than the Toyota Yaris. In concept form it used an electric motor and lithium-polymer battery pack to make 109-hp and 207 lb-ft of torque with a range of 124 miles. There’s no denying that leading automakers are vying to be future leaders in alternate energy. 10,631 Kia Sorento SUVs built between June 15th, 2006 and November 27th, 2007 will be recalled due to a faulty airbag issue where the passenger-side air bag may be turned off even when an adult is occupying the seat. Naturally, the Occupant Classification System is designed to be turned off when children or small adults are seated in the front passenger seat, but in the recalled models it can mistakenly classify an adult passenger as a child. If the air bag is deactivated, the light will illuminate on the center instrument panel. The recall will have vehicle owners’ programming updated by Kia in the Sorento’s OCS module at no charge. There’s no denying that the 2012 BMW M5 probably deserves a higher spot on our Frankfurt Auto Show Top 10 list, but here it is anyway. Maybe it’s that we all knew several months ago that it would have a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and make 562-hp that made its “official” reveal less captivating than it otherwise could have been. Still, don’t let the 10th place spot make you believe we think any less of what is likely to be crowned as the world’s highest performance sedan. During the economic recession, many car companies delayed introducing new models, but not anymore. At Frankfurt, more than 100 new vehicles competed for visitors’ attention, and about 10,000 reporters jumped from showroom to showroom to cover the future trends of the auto industry. Kia has been particularly aggressive by unveiling a coupe-like sports sedan, named GT, and a new 3-door version of the already acclaimed Rio for the occasion, drawing much media interest and many visitors. Many media outlets have been focusing on the GT, a concept car that made a few jaws drop when it was finally put on display. The 4,690 mm long concept has the classic front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout, a first for Kia. Power is provided by a 3.3-liter turgocharged Lambda V6 GDI(Galsoline Direct Injection) engine generating 395 ps and 54.4 kgfm of tourque(534 Nm) with a transmission of an eight-speed automatic. Peter Schreyer, the mastermind behind the GT’s design said, “It’s exactly the kind of car Kia should be making,” announcing a new direction for Kia. Guillaume, who was also involved in the design process, said the car was inspired by the spirit of iconic 1970s GT cars, a vehicle that has effortless style and high speed. NHTSA has announced a safety recall for 10,600 model year 2007-2008 Kia Sorento SUVs. A sensor used to deactivate an airbag when a child or baby seat is installed at the front passenger side may incorrectly deactivate the airbag when an adult is in the passenger seat. Airbag deactivation will cause an increased risk of occupant injury in the event of a frontal collision. According to studies, this malfunction occurs when a heavier adult rider is present. The “passenger airbag off” warning light will illuminate in such an occurrence, notifying the occupants of the vehicle. Kia is currently informing all affected Sorento owners to bring their vehicles to authorized dealerships to receive a reprogram for their OCS system. [source: NHTSA] Lees het hele artikel
