Kia’s all new cee’d premiered at the Geneva Motor Show this past March and quickly captured the attention of automobile enthusiasts worldwide with its enhanced design. The cee’d is a contender in one the world’s most fiercely crowded and competitive European C-segment (mid-size car) market, so creating an appealing design was vital. Today on Buzz, we’re going unfold the first part of the cee’d’s design story from the outside-in, and breakdown its sportiness and unique design elements. The main concept of the cee’d exterior design is ‘solid, fast and dynamic’. New design elements such as the ‘DLO (Day Light Opening)’ (overall shape of the car’s side windows) was extended to the front for a more dynamic and masculine appearance. The steep shoulder lines add to the ‘open’ look of the new cee’d. Designers also focused on the exterior, as they wanted to create a well-equipped yet simple feel. For example, the DLO, exclusive headlamps and a chrome coating on the front grilles were all utilized to create a more luxurious expression. The designers went to great lengths to create a more dynamic and sporty look by making a frontal design of the car lower and wider. The key design elements that define the character line of the exterior, including the radiator grille and headlamps, were created to achieve the highest aesthetic value possible. The location of the A pillar was pulled forward to create a more dynamic aspect, creating a cab-forward design. The volume of the different parts of the vehicle was then adjusted to create a balanced appearance. The lower part of the cee’d was designed with the intention of creating stable and tough expression that would match any car on the road. The rear design was created with an emphasis on infusing strong and orderly look that would match well with the dynamic and solid display of its front and side. Simplistic yet elegant, the design of the new cee’d manages to stand out from the crowd with its distinctive design elements and in particular boasting Kia’s signature front grille design. It can undoubtedly compete against all models in its class. As expected, the 2014 Kia Forte sedan will be making its North American debut at the 2012 LA Auto Show later this week. The new sedan was launched earlier this year in Korea as the K3 sporting a longer, wider, and lower body than its predecessor. The wheelbase has also been lengthened by around 2 inches to enhance passenger and interior space. Building off four consecutive years of growth, Kia is looking to launch 51 new or updated models by the end of 2016. The Korean automaker has seen four years of record production, sales, and profit figures, and looks forward of moving into the future by entering new markets. That means Kia will be working on a hot hatch based on the new Procee’d, an EV variant for its popular Soul, and even a rear-wheel drive sports car. After admitting to overstating fuel mileage on many of their cars, both Hyundai and Kia are seeing “purchase intent” numbers dropping, according to data from Edmunds. Hyundai and Kia’s marketing heavily relied on their vehicles achieving 40 mpg or more, but the brand’s images have now been tainted by the mpg mess up, and share prices have already taken a hit because of it. The “purchase intent” for Hyundai’s Elantra, previously touted as a 40 mpg model, has gone from 6.7 percent on October 28, down to 6.3 percent as of November 18. Kia’s small Soul hatchback saw the sharpest loss in “purchase intent” numbers, dropping to 7.3 percent from 9.2 percent in just under a month. The Soul lost 6 mpg highway after the fuel economy numbers were clarified, representing the largest loss out of all the vehicles involved. Although Hyundai and Kia have both apologized and initiated a reimbursement program for consumers, the tarnishing of both brand’s reputation is playing against them when it comes to sales. As Kia continues to enjoy continued growth, the Korean automaker’s CEO is looking ahead to the future and wants to launch a flagship sports car to continue pushing the brand forward. Kia is “seriously looking” at production model based on the GT Concept (above), says company CEO Hyoung-Keun Lee. The GT isn’t the only direction this new sports car could head in, however, with Lee recently commenting that another sports car concept will bow at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Performance won’t stop with this front-drive hot hatch says Lee, commenting that, “In my opinion, a sports car should be rear-wheel drive.” Lee also said that both media and consumer response will be taken into consideration before the Korean automaker decides which concept to make into a reality, but that a decision will be made quickly once the next concept debuts. A couple of weeks ago, Kia debuted five Justice League concept models at the 2012 SEMA Show, and now the Korean automaker has released a video of the unveiling. In a sea of modified and custom cars, setting yourself apart from the crowd is no easy task. This year, Kia decided the best way to do so was to create superhero-inspired rides from its model lineup, which turned out to be a huge hit with the show goers. The lineup included a custom Kia Rio with an Aquaman theme, a Flash Forte Koup, a Green Lantern Soul, a Cyborg-inspired Forte Five-Door, and an Optima featuring plenty of Batman goods. In 1944, Kia Motors, then known as ‘Kyungsung Precision Industries,’ had its humble start as a handmade bicycle manufacturer. Little did the modest start-up know at the time, but this operation would pave the way to manufacturing motor vehicles of all kinds, and lead Kia in becoming one of the world’s fastest growing automotive brands. That’s right, it all began with a metal frame that connected a saddle seat, two wheels, foot pedals, and a pair of handle bars to form one the most basic means of mechanical travel. Coming Full Circle to the New K Velo Going back to its humble beginnings with a modern and updated twist, Kia has recently launched the ‘K Velo’ series of bicycles, which were designed by its Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer. Today on Buzz, we’re going to take a rare glimpse into Kia’s bicycle past, and also provide details on these new Mini Velo bikes. 1944 – Early pioneers of Kia Motors, then known as ‘Kyungsung Precision Industries,’ assemble bicycles by hand 1957 – A larger scale production facility is moved to the southern South Korean city of Busan Finished bicycles being unloaded for distribution 1945 – Kia Super Cycle 3000 1945 – The Kia Scenic 26 1970 – Kia High Riser 103 (3-speed bicycle) The 2012 K Velo K Velo ‘CITY’ version sports Kia’s trademark tiger-nosed radiator grille on the basket to maintain the brands signature design The K Velo are the first bicycles designed by Kia Motors under the supervision of Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer. Mini Velos have become a popular style of bicycles in urban cities and are known for their elegantly compact frames and short build, which make them ideal for city commutes and transport via car or bus. Mini Velos are more common in Asia, especially in Korea and Japan, than in Europe and the U.S., but they are gaining popularity with young urban trendsetters in the West. Kia’s Mini Velos are created to appeal to these design conscious ‘young-at-hearts’ who desire to be mobile with Kia in any given situation. Design Concept Kia Motors applied its ‘simplicity of the straight line’ design philosophy on the new bicycles and the K Velo is a joint project between Peter Schreyer and Korean bicycle manufacturing company, ‘Samchully.’ The project took 13 months of research and development under Peter’s design direction. K Velo is available in two different versions: ‘CITY,’ which has convenience features such as 11 gears, a basket and fenders while the ‘SPEED’ version features lighter interrupters and bike weight. Their clean and simple aerodynamic profiles are complemented with striking details, offering stylish functionality in any urban setting. Both bikes were developed to meet the rising demand for sustainable and portable transportation, especially in urban areas. The production of these bicycles is an attempt to motivate our customers to give greater consideration to the environment by using bikes for short distance journeys. The K Velo ‘SPEED’ version features lighter interrupters and bike weight We started this project in order to create an environmentally friendlier approach by showcasing an alternative means of transportation from Kia. Through K Velo, we expect to show Kia’s design excellence. The bicycles are available for purchase on the Kia Brand Collection page (www.shop-kia.com), but are only available in Korea at this time – CITY is priced at approximately US$1,500 and SPEED at US$1,100.
